For a playlist-based setup, Liquidsoap provides a built-in crossfade operator and, since version 2.2.5, an automated crossfade option when its FFmpeg bindings are available. Choose carefully: gapless sequencing plays tracks consecutively without overlap; a crossfade overlaps them.
First identify what kind of gap you hear
A transition setting can only address silence caused by a track change. Listen to the outgoing program audio and locate the interruption before changing configuration.
- At every file boundary: inspect how the playlist source schedules and switches tracks. Liquidsoap’s documented radio example applies
crossfadeto a playlist-derived source before sending it onward. - Inside a track: the silence may be part of the recording itself. A crossfade between files will not remove silence embedded in a file.
- When switching between sources: check how file, live, network, or hardware inputs are combined. Their track-switching behavior can differ.
- After an interruption: a transport or network interruption is not the same as a track-boundary gap. Crossfade alone does not establish that such interruptions are fixed.
Choose the transition you actually want

Liquidsoap documents a default crossfade operator and customizable transitions. Its cross mechanism can use average volume near the end of the outgoing track and beginning of the incoming one when determining a transition. A crossfade is not exact gapless playback, and no single overlap is right for every playlist. Test the behavior with representative tracks and listen for abrupt level changes, clipped beginnings, or overlapping vocals.
Set up crossfading in Liquidsoap
The key configuration principle is to apply the transition to the playlist-derived radio source in the playout chain, before the resulting audio is sent to YouTube Live. The exact script depends on your installed version, source types, and clock setup; Liquidsoap’s documentation describes the operator and workflow, but does not establish one configuration that fits every deployment.

- Confirm the playlist is advancing. Check that the playlist source can read its files and select the next track. A transition cannot conceal a playlist that has stopped or failed to load its next item.
- Check your Liquidsoap version and dependencies. Automated crossfade transitions are integrated starting with Liquidsoap 2.2.5. The documented simple activation uses
enable_autocue_metadata()when FFmpeg bindings are available. Verify that your installation includes those bindings before relying on the automated feature. - Apply the transition to the playlist source. Liquidsoap’s documented radio pattern derives a source from a playlist and applies
crossfadeto that source. Keep the transition upstream of the output to YouTube so it shapes the program audio before delivery. - Decide whether to use automated or custom behavior. Begin with the documented default if an overlap suits the material. If track pairs need different treatment, configure a custom transition rather than assuming one fixed fade will sound right everywhere.
- Listen to the outgoing program. Check several boundaries, including tracks with quiet endings, loud openings, long intros, and vocals. Verify the audio being produced by the playout chain, not only whether YouTube is receiving a connection.
Liquidsoap describes itself as software for building audio and video streams, including internet radio and RTMP output to YouTube. Its project documentation also notes that automated crossfade transitions have been integrated since release 2.2.5: Liquidsoap crossfade documentation and Liquidsoap project homepage.
Mixed playlists and clock issues
Track boundaries can behave differently when a playlist is combined with live or externally timed sources. Liquidsoap’s reference says file sources default to track-sensitive switching, while live network and hardware inputs default to non-track-sensitive behavior. Inspect the actual sources and switching settings rather than assuming every input changes at a track boundary.

Crossfade lookahead also needs timing flexibility. If a live, network, or hardware-timed source controls its own timing, it can conflict with the clock used for the transition. Liquidsoap documents buffer as the standard way to bridge clock domains and warns that disabling synchronization without buffering can allow drift that eventually causes glitches. Consult its clock documentation if you encounter timing conflicts; do not treat disabling synchronization alone as a complete fix.
Troubleshoot persistent silence
