How to Prevent a Blank Frame When OBS Switches Between Playlist Videos

A blank in OBS can have different causes depending on whether it appears between playlist items or during a scene change. Use this diagnostic sequence to check source type, playback settings, and visibility.

First determine whether the blank appears between items in one playlist or when OBS changes scenes: those are different problems. For a playlist in a single source, OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable source; for a scene-switch blank, check how the source behaves when it becomes visible. Then inspect playback settings and source visibility and test after each change. OBS does not document a universal setting that guarantees gap-free transitions between playlist videos.

Identify when the blank appears

  • Between playlist items: the blank occurs as one file ends and the next begins while the scene stays the same. Focus on the playlist, its media, and the source type.
  • When changing scenes: the blank appears as the source becomes visible or the transition completes. Focus on source activation, visibility behavior, and what is layered above the video.

Watch the transition closely and note the exact item and scene. Change one setting at a time, then replay the same sequence. This helps distinguish a playback handoff from a visibility or scene-transition issue.

Use the source type that matches the setup

One playlist in a source: VLC Video

OBS distinguishes its built-in Media Source, which handles audio and video files, from VLC Video, which can hold a playlist. To use VLC Video, VLC must be installed. OBS’s documentation says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source choices, check that installation requirement first. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.

Individual files: Media Source

If each clip is its own built-in Media Source, inspect that source’s activation and file-closing options. Those settings affect what happens when the source becomes active or inactive; they are not documented as a general remedy for a gap between playlist items.

Check playback and visibility settings

For Media Source: activation and file closing

In the Media Source properties, inspect Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS describes it as restarting the file when the source is in the current scene and visible. Whether restarting is appropriate depends on whether you want playback to begin again when the source reappears.

Also inspect Close file when inactive. It can free memory while the source is inactive, but OBS warns that when the source is shown again, “there may be a small period of time where it is not showing while it reloads.” The warning is specifically about reloading an inactive source as it becomes visible—not a guarantee that changing this option will fix a between-video playlist gap. These setting descriptions are in the OBS Project documentation dated 2022-01-11.

For VLC Video: Visibility Behaviour

VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour controls playback while the source is not visible. OBS lists three choices:

  • Stop when not visible, restart when visible: the documented default.
  • Pause when not visible, resume when visible: playback pauses while hidden and resumes when shown.
  • Always play: playback continues even when the source is hidden.

Choose according to the scene setup—for example, whether a hidden playlist should continue or restart. This setting governs hidden-source behavior; OBS does not say it ensures a seamless handoff between playlist items.

Verify the Sources stack

In the OBS Sources dock, check that the intended video and any background source have their eye icons enabled. Then check the order: a source higher in the list appears above lower sources and can cover them. An unintended visible source layered over the video can look like a playback blank. The OBS Project’s Sources Guide explains visibility and stacking.

Check playlists that mix audio and video

A 2020 user report described a VLC Video playlist retaining a video frame while an audio-only item played, on OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. That report is specific to those versions and that sequence; it does not establish a current, general VLC Video defect. If your playlist includes audio-only files, test the same sequence in your installed OBS version and note whether the image disappears, freezes, or is covered. The historical report is available in the OBS Studio issue tracker.

Scene-switch blanks: treat activation separately

A 2020 OBS forum discussion concerned a source that appeared black until its scene became active. A responder suggested disabling restart-on-activation, and the original poster reported that it resolved that particular case. The discussion involved an IP-camera scene fade, so it is not evidence that the setting fixes playlist handoffs in general. If your blank occurs only during scene changes, you can test the relevant activation setting for that source, then restore it if it does not help. See the OBS forum discussion.

A step-by-step troubleshooting order

  1. Reproduce and classify the blank. Establish whether it happens between items in the same playlist or only when switching scenes.
  2. Identify the source. For a playlist in one source, confirm that it is VLC Video and that VLC is installed in the matching 64-bit form when using 64-bit OBS. For separate files, inspect the relevant Media Source.
  3. Inspect the source’s behavior. For Media Source, review Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive. For VLC Video, review Visibility Behaviour and decide whether the source should stop, pause, or continue while hidden.
  4. Check visibility and layering. Confirm the video and intended background are visible in the Sources dock, and no higher source unintentionally covers the image.
  5. Test mixed playlists. If an audio-only item follows a video, replay that exact sequence and record the OBS version.
  6. Change one thing, then retest. Use the same scene and playlist after each adjustment. If the blank remains only at an item handoff, do not assume a scene activation setting addresses it.
