1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo prevent clipping, lower gain at the microphone or source until the loudest real ASMR sounds have headroom, check the signal in OBS, and place OBS’s Limiter last in the relevant filter chain as a final safeguard. Record and listen back, then test through YouTube’s ingest path with representative audio before relying on the continuous stream. A limiter cannot repair distortion that happened earlier in the signal chain.
What clipping is—and where to look for it
Digital audio reaches its maximum at 0 dBFS. If a signal exceeds that ceiling, it can clip and sound harsh or distorted. OBS’s technical guide gives -9 dBFS as a “Permitted Maximum Level” reference; treat it as a conservative meter and headroom reference, not a required ASMR loudness target or a YouTube rule. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
Trace the whole route: microphone or playback source → preamp, interface, or mixer → OBS source filters and fader → OBS stream output → YouTube. Check early in the chain as well as in OBS. If the microphone, preamp, or another device has already distorted the sound, reducing the OBS fader or adding a limiter later cannot restore the clean audio.
Set gain using the sounds you actually stream
- Start at the source. Check the microphone or playback device’s physical gain, then the interface or mixer if you use one. OBS advises checking audio at the source and again in OBS. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Test representative material. Include the loudest sounds you expect—such as close-mic breaths, whispers, tapping, brushing, or crinkles—not just silence or a quiet trigger. These examples are practical test material, not platform requirements.
- Watch the OBS peak meter. Leave room for brief transients and for sources that combine in the mix. Routine peaks should not hit 0 dBFS. Meter readings help you spot peaks but do not reveal or undo distortion that occurred before OBS.
- Adjust gain before reaching for processing. If a source overloads, reduce its gain at the earliest control point that is causing the overload. Listen at the source and in OBS after each change.
Put OBS’s Limiter last
In OBS, open the relevant source’s Filters and add a Limiter after the other filters in that chain. OBS specifically says the Limiter should be the last filter. Its documented defaults are a threshold of -6.00 dB and a release of 60 ms; use them only as a starting point, not as a proven ideal for every ASMR recording. OBS Limiter Filter

The Limiter keeps the signal from exceeding its threshold at that point in the chain. After setting it, listen for pumping, dulled transients, or other audible artifacts. The Audio Engineering Society cautions that limiting beyond about 1 dB can introduce artifacts that outweigh its benefits, while emphasizing listening as the final judge. That is general internet-audio guidance, not a YouTube Live rule or a specific ASMR setting. AES TD1008, Recommendations for Loudness of Internet Audio Streaming and On-demand Distribution
Record, listen back, and test YouTube’s ingest
- Record a normal session in OBS. Use the scenes, sources, filters, and gain settings planned for the live stream. Listen back to the file before going live; OBS recommends this check. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Listen through the entire route. If available, check at the hardware or source and again in OBS. A recording can expose clipping or processing artifacts that are easy to miss while watching meters.
- Run a YouTube test with the real program material. Match the intended stream’s audio and movement as closely as possible. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube live encoder settings
- Recheck after changes. Listen and test again after changing a source, gain control, scene, filter, interface, or software setting. For a long-running stream, periodically observe the live output; no cited platform guidance defines a required check interval.
Keep audio encoding separate from level control
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and constant-bitrate encoding. These are delivery settings, not clipping remedies: a compatible codec or sample rate will not fix an input that is already distorted. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the rest of your stream configuration. YouTube live encoder settings

Troubleshoot common clipping problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The audio is distorted even after lowering the OBS fader. | Overload may have happened at the microphone, preamp, interface, mixer, or playback source before OBS. | Reduce gain at the earliest overloaded point, then monitor the source and OBS again. |
| Only loud triggers sound harsh. | Gain may have been set using quiet material, leaving no headroom for sharp transients. | Test with the loudest expected whispers, breaths, taps, brushes, or crinkles; adjust source gain and leave peak margin. |
| Audio pumps or sounds dull after adding a Limiter. | The Limiter may be working too hard or its settings may not suit the material. | Listen to a recording, reduce upstream gain where needed, and adjust the Limiter. Do not assume the documented defaults are ideal for every sound. |
| OBS sounds clean, but the YouTube test has a problem. | The issue may be in the stream output or ingest path rather than the local monitor. | Run another test with the actual planned audio and configuration, and check YouTube’s stream health and messages. |
| The meter looks safe, but a recording still sounds clipped. | A peak may have clipped before the meter’s point in the chain, or the distortion may be hard to spot in real time. | Check the source and intermediate hardware, then record and listen back after each gain adjustment. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your ASMR program is prerecorded video rather than a live microphone performance, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos without leaving a computer on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded material in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
