You do not need to send a ProRes-sized stream to YouTube. Keep the ProRes file as your high-quality source, then encode a smaller live delivery stream at a supported codec and bitrate. For a practical starting point, YouTube’s current recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. The right setting depends on resolution, frame rate, content, and the upload capacity available for the continuous stream.
Keep ProRes as the master, not the live delivery format
ProRes is useful as a high-quality source for editing, archiving, or making future versions. It does not determine the bitrate YouTube must receive during a live broadcast. A playout system or encoder can read the ProRes file and encode its output into a supported live codec at a much lower bitrate.
This is especially important for continuous streaming: the outgoing encode must run for as long as the stream is live, so its bitrate affects sustained upload demand. YouTube notes that ProRes 422 and ProRes 4444 can work for HDR uploads but require very high bitrates for high quality, which can increase upload and processing time. That upload guidance is not a requirement to use ProRes as a live ingest codec. YouTube’s live encoder settings and upload recommendations describe separate workflows.
Choose the live output settings
YouTube’s live encoder documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The page does not show a publication date, so check it again when configuring an encoder.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Practical bitrate examples
The values below are YouTube’s published live bitrate recommendations, not guarantees of identical picture quality for every source. The platform’s full table contains additional resolutions and frame rates.
| Output | H.264 | AV1 or HEVC |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These recommendations depend on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. H.264 is a straightforward choice when broad encoder compatibility matters; HEVC and AV1 are also listed by YouTube, with different recommended bitrates at some settings. For HDR live streaming, YouTube identifies H.265 over RTMP(S). For SDR, use Rec. 709.

Match the encode to the documentary
- Check the source resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, color treatment (SDR or HDR), and whether the stream needs audio before choosing an output.
- Choose 1080p or 720p only if it suits the source and audience. Higher resolution or frame rate can improve detail or motion rendition, but requires more sustained upload capacity.
- Use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio if the live output includes sound. Listen to representative passages as well as checking the picture.
Prepare the ProRes source and playout
- Preserve the master. Keep the original ProRes file if you may edit it again or need a high-quality archive. Make a separate delivery encode for the live stream rather than replacing the master.
- Select a playout method. A local encoder or playlist workflow gives you direct control but depends on a computer and a stable internet connection staying available. A hosted service can handle continuous prerecorded-video playout in the cloud; compare its current features, cost, and operating limits rather than assuming a directory listing proves reliability. YouTube’s encoder directory lists both local software encoders and cloud services in this category.
- Configure a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use, and do not publish it.
- Set the encoder output. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, supported codec, CBR, bitrate, two-second keyframes, and audio settings. Enter the YouTube ingest address and stream key in the encoder’s live destination settings.
- Preview before a long run. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Watch motion, gradients, fine detail, and audio on representative source material. If the image breaks up or the connection cannot sustain the encode, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
Leave upload headroom and test continuously
YouTube recommends about 20% more available upload bandwidth than the bitrate being sent. Base the check on measured outbound capacity, not download speed. If sending a primary and backup stream, account for their combined outgoing bitrate. Congestion, other devices, and fluctuations can make a connection that barely meets the nominal bitrate unreliable.
- Test the actual computer, network, encoder settings, and playlist you plan to use for the continuous run.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the local encoder’s connection and dropped-frame information.
- Check both motion and audio over time; a short static test may not reveal problems in busy scenes or longer operation.
- If the stream is unstable, lower resolution or bitrate until the connection has practical headroom, then preview again.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Your encoder still needs to deliver a stable, supported input to YouTube.

Do not confuse a live stream with a finished-video upload
Uploading a completed documentary file to a channel is different from continuously sending an encoded live feed. For standard finished-video uploads, YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video, supported audio such as AAC-LC, and Fast Start (the moov atom at the front). Its SDR upload recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rate. Those are upload recommendations, not live ingest settings. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and use the live bitrate table for a broadcast.
HDR needs correct metadata
YouTube’s HDR upload guidance supports PQ or HLG workflows and says correct metadata—including transfer function, primaries, and matrix—is essential. It lists HEVC/H.265, AV1, and VP9 Profile 2 as codecs that support 10-bit HDR at reasonable bitrates; ProRes 422 and ProRes 4444 also work but can require very high bitrates and take longer to upload or process. Do not label footage HDR unless it was graded as HDR. For a live HDR workflow, follow the live encoder guidance for H.265 rather than assuming upload settings apply unchanged.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream buffers or drops frames: the outgoing bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. Measure outbound capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution if needed.
- The picture looks poor despite a large ProRes source: the source bitrate does not set live output quality. Check the live encoder’s chosen codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s recommendations, then preview representative scenes.
- The encoder rejects a keyframe or connection configuration: verify RTMP/RTMPS ingest, the correct stream key, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
- HDR looks wrong or is not recognized: verify that the source was genuinely graded for HDR and that the required metadata is correct. Do not apply HDR tags to SDR footage.
- A finished upload uses unexpected settings: confirm whether you are uploading a file or sending a live feed. MP4/H.264 upload guidance and live ingest requirements are not interchangeable.
