Prepare a 9:16 portrait video, then send it to YouTube Live using an encoder—or configure Live Control Room’s dual-stream mode if you also need a horizontal output. A vertical live stream may be discoverable while viewers browse YouTube Shorts, but YouTube does not guarantee placement in the Shorts feed. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan for supervision and local recording: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
What “Shorts-style live” means
YouTube’s vertical live experience presents portrait streams and can surface them to viewers browsing Shorts. That is a discovery possibility, not a promise of distribution or audience reach. YouTube says viewers who are not already subscribed can also find these live streams while browsing Shorts (Get started with live streaming).
A vertical live broadcast is still a YouTube live stream. The source needs to be composed for a tall frame; changing a horizontal video’s output dimensions alone can crop or shrink important material. For documentary footage, keep faces, subtitles, maps, archival details, and lower-thirds inside the portrait frame rather than relying on YouTube or an encoder to reframe them intelligently.
Choose one portrait output or dual stream

Live Control Room provides layout choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. These choices affect how source material is adapted; inspect the preview and confirm that framing, text, and graphics remain legible. You cannot add the vertical format after a dual-stream broadcast has started. YouTube documents separate stream keys for the outputs and a shared watch URL and chat for the dual-stream experience (YouTube live-stream guidance).

Prepare the portrait master
- Build a 9:16 sequence. A 1080 × 1920 export is a practical example, not a YouTube resolution requirement. Use the output size and frame rate appropriate to your source and encoder configuration.
- Reframe each shot deliberately. Place the subject and essential visual information within the central portrait area. Check wide documentary scenes, maps, credits, and archival footage individually; a center crop can remove context at either side.
- Keep text readable on a phone. Use concise captions and titles with enough contrast and margin from the edges. Preview at phone size. Avoid placing subtitles where platform controls or other interface elements may obscure them.
- Check every transition and loop point. Watch the end-to-start transition, verify that the image does not flash or jump unexpectedly, and make sure audio does not cut off abruptly. For playlists, inspect each item’s framing and sound, not just the first video.
- Export and retain a local copy. Keep the final portrait file, along with any project or source files needed to correct a framing or rights issue.
Configure YouTube Live and your encoder
- Enable live streaming and create or schedule the event. Use a channel that is eligible to go live and complete any verification or activation steps YouTube requires. In Live Control Room, select the intended vertical or dual-stream setup before starting.
- Copy the correct stream URL and key. Enter the broadcast’s server URL and stream key in your encoder. For third-party dual streaming, choose RTMP(S), provide the second vertical key, and make sure the vertical feed goes to that key and the horizontal feed to its matching destination. Treat keys like passwords; do not publish or share them.
- Match encoder output to the portrait program. Set the output canvas and stream dimensions to the portrait composition for a single vertical feed. With dual streaming, confirm each output’s orientation and inspect both previews. Do not assume a landscape feed will become a well-composed portrait feed through automatic cropping.
- Use YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above 4 seconds. Use a supported video codec and bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate, following the current settings table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and RTMPS for encrypted delivery (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Check upload capacity. Test the actual connection used for streaming and leave headroom for stable delivery. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Network capacity, resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings all affect the required upload rate.
- Run a full preflight test. Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Verify portrait framing, motion, audio levels, sync, and the correct feed in the YouTube preview. Check stream health and fix warnings before making the broadcast public.
Plan operations for a 24/7 broadcast
A continuous stream is an operating plan, not a setting that guarantees uninterrupted delivery. An encoder-based setup depends on the machine, power, internet connection, and encoder process staying available. Decide who will watch stream health, how the encoder will recover after a network or power failure, and how you will restart or replace a failed source. The official YouTube guidance does not establish a preferred computer or server specification or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
- Keep a separate local recording or archive backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a day-long program (Archive live streams).
- Account for DVR limitations: rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours (Turn on DVR on live streams).
- If a complete archive is important, consider planned broadcast breaks and restarts. This produces separate live broadcasts rather than one continuous stream archive, so make sure the schedule and viewer handoff suit your channel.
- An external SSD is one optional way to store local recordings. YouTube recommends a local backup, not a particular drive or model.
Check rights and monetization before looping
Clear the rights for every piece of footage, music, narration, image, and other third-party material in the program. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if it identifies protected material. A license by itself may not prevent a Content ID interruption: where a rights owner uses Content ID, confirm whether the channel or stream must be allowlisted before relying on that license (Copyright issues with live streams).

Permission to broadcast and eligibility to monetize are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic viewer value and addresses repetitive or mass-produced content, including live streams. A loop is not automatically eligible for monetization because it runs continuously or appears in a vertical feed. Review current channel eligibility and policy requirements before building a revenue plan around repeated material (YouTube channel monetization policies).
