For a YouTube playlist stream that should go out at 30 fps, prepare 30 fps copies of your 60 fps clips and set the outgoing encoder to 30 fps. Keep the originals, check fast motion and audio after conversion, then test the stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube accepts live input up to 60 fps, so converting the files is a choice to match your 30 fps target—not a platform requirement.
Choose the frame rate for the outgoing stream
A 60 fps source can be used in a live workflow that accepts up to 60 fps, according to YouTube’s live encoder guidance. If your intended stream is 30 fps, however, make the playback and streaming chain output 30 fps. The YouTube Live API recognizes 30fps as a declared rate; it also supports variable detection, paired with variable resolution, as described in the LiveStreams API documentation.
This workflow assumes your playlist feeds a live encoder or streaming service. YouTube’s documentation specifies live ingest settings; it does not prescribe an editing application or one best offline conversion method for every type of footage.
Prepare 30 fps copies of the clips
- Confirm the source and target. Check the actual frame rate of your files and decide whether the stream should be 30 fps. Retain the original 60 fps files so you can revise the conversion if the result is unsuitable.
- Convert working copies to 30 fps. A straightforward conversion reduces the temporal sampling from 60 frames per second to 30. YouTube does not recommend a particular frame-selection or motion-interpolation algorithm, so choose a method that suits the footage rather than treating one as an official platform requirement.
- Inspect motion and timing. Review quick pans, action, and other fast movement for judder or missed events. Check that audio remains in sync and the clip duration is intact. If the result is not acceptable, try a different conversion method or retain the original and configure the live output for 60 fps instead.
- Keep image dimensions appropriate to the planned output. YouTube says it automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers; that does not remove the need to choose a suitable resolution and bitrate for your encoder’s ingest.
Set the live encoder to 30 fps
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Select the intended resolution and 30 fps output, then choose the bitrate for that resolution and codec from YouTube’s live settings table.

| Live resolution and rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest bitrates, not universal offline export targets. Confirm current requirements in YouTube Help before configuring an event.
If you use API-based configuration rather than a fixed encoder setting, the LiveStreams API documents 30fps for a declared 30 fps stream. Its variable frame-rate detection option is paired with variable resolution. If you allow automatic detection, check what rate YouTube identifies rather than assuming it matches your intended output.

Test the playlist stream and check its health
- Run a test before the event with clips that contain motion and audio similar to the material you plan to stream.
- Confirm the outgoing resolution and frame rate, check audio sync, and watch the stream long enough to see how transitions between playlist clips behave.
- Review YouTube stream health for configuration problems. The LiveStreams API includes frame-rate mismatch among documented health issues; correct a mismatch in the output configuration or playback chain.
YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. A converted file that looks correct by itself does not guarantee that the encoder is sending the intended live settings.
Keep RTMP and HLS requirements separate
Do not apply HLS-specific packaging requirements to an RTMP/RTMPS setup. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide describes a distinct path requiring M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. Use those requirements only if you are actually sending an HLS ingest stream.
