For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream, the signal you send should be 8-bit Rec. 709. If your footage is HDR, convert or tone-map it to SDR before or during encoding; changing an output bit-depth setting alone does not necessarily perform that conversion correctly. A 10-bit source is not automatically an HDR stream, because bit depth and HDR color encoding are separate properties.
Choose the delivery target before changing settings
This workflow is for a conventional SDR live stream, not for delivering HDR to viewers with HDR-capable displays. YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies 8-bit depth and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its HDR guidance describes a different ingest path using 10-bit and HDR color signaling. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also explains that it transcodes live streams into formats for different devices and network conditions. That playback conversion does not replace sending the intended SDR signal at ingest.
Do not infer HDR merely from a file being 10-bit. Check the footage’s color and transfer characteristics, including whether genuine HDR material uses PQ or HLG. If the footage is already SDR, you may not need an HDR-to-SDR transform even if it is 10-bit.
Prepare HDR footage for SDR
- Inspect the source. Confirm whether it is HDR or SDR and, for HDR, identify its transfer function, such as PQ or HLG. Use your editor or media-analysis tools to inspect the actual file rather than relying on its bit-depth label.
- Convert HDR to SDR when needed. Apply an appropriate tone map in your editor, media pipeline, or encoder so highlights and color fit the SDR range. The correct transform depends on the source and the software; YouTube’s published live-stream guidance does not give a universal tone-mapping recipe or control values.
- Set the outgoing signal to SDR. Configure the encoder for 8-bit output and Rec. 709. Make sure the color conversion occurs before or as part of encoding. A bit-depth dropdown by itself may only change the output precision, not map HDR brightness and color into SDR correctly.
- Set the other live encoder options. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and bitrate. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. See the current encoder settings guidance for the applicable codec and bitrate recommendations.
- Test the complete chain. Run a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then inspect the result on an SDR display. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement before the event and monitoring stream health while live.
Compare the test with the intended SDR look, paying particular attention to clipped highlights, crushed shadows, or unexpected color shifts. YouTube’s transcoding creates playback versions for different devices and connections, but screens, display settings, and viewing conditions vary; do not promise that every viewer will see an identical image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SDR settings versus YouTube’s HDR path
Use the SDR column for this article’s goal. The HDR column is a separate delivery choice, not a shortcut for preparing HDR footage for an SDR stream.
| Decision | Standard SDR stream | HDR stream |
|---|---|---|
| Bit depth | 8-bit | 10-bit |
| Color signaling | Rec. 709 | BT.2020 primaries with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matching the source |
| Codec | Use a codec supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance | HEVC (H.265), according to YouTube’s HDR guidance |
| OBS example | Configure SDR output; tone-map HDR sources with an appropriate software-specific workflow | YouTube documents an OBS 30.1-or-later example using compatible hardware HEVC, Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG |
| Viewer presentation | Standard dynamic range | HDR on supported devices; SDR presentation on unsupported devices |
These SDR and HDR distinctions come from YouTube’s live encoder guidance and YouTube’s HDR live-stream guidance. The HDR OBS example is not a set of SDR conversion instructions.

Common problems and what to check
- The picture looks washed out or highlights are harsh. Check that HDR footage was tone-mapped to SDR, rather than only tagged or output at 8-bit. Verify the source transfer function and the editor or encoder’s conversion settings.
- Colors look wrong in the preview. Confirm that the outgoing stream is signaled as Rec. 709 for SDR and that the source-to-output conversion is consistent. Recheck the result on an SDR display and avoid relying on one screen as a guarantee of every viewer’s result.
- The encoder reports a keyframe or stream configuration issue. Set a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
- Playback is unstable or stream health is poor. Review the selected codec, bitrate, network connection, and Live Control Room stream-health indicators. Test representative movement and audio before the actual broadcast.
- You are unsure whether the file is HDR. Treat bit depth as insufficient evidence. Inspect the file’s color metadata and workflow; 10-bit describes precision, not by itself the dynamic-range target.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your documentary is a prerecorded video that you want to loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Prepare the video in the intended SDR format before upload if you want a standard SDR stream. StreamNeo sends what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
