How to play Pips
- Look over the board and note the rule shown in each colored region.
- Drag a domino from the tray onto the board, covering two adjacent squares.
- Tap or click a placed domino to rotate it 90 degrees when its orientation needs to change.
- Continue placing tiles until every square is covered and every region satisfies its rule.
A tile can fit the board’s shape but still break a region’s condition, so consider both the domino’s values and where each half lands. The puzzle is complete only when the whole board is covered and all conditions are met.
What the colored regions and symbols mean
Each colored region defines a constraint on the pips—the dots on the domino halves—in its squares. Values follow conventional domino notation, from blank (zero) through six. The rules described in the launch materials include:
- =: the relevant values must be equal.
- ≠: the relevant values must be different.
- > or <: values must be greater than or less than the number shown.
- A target number: the pips in the region must add up to that total.
- No condition shown: the region is unconstrained.
How a rule applies depends on the region: a comparison can concern individual pips, while a sum rule evaluates pips collectively. For instance, the examples “>3” and “<13” illustrate greater-than and less-than conditions; read the exact symbol and number in the region rather than assuming every rule works the same way. A practical way to solve a board
- Start with the tightest constraint. A target sum, a comparison rule, or a small region may allow fewer possible combinations than an unconstrained area.
- Check which domino values could satisfy it. Consider the pips that will land inside the region before using a tile elsewhere.
- Test orientation as well as placement. Rotating a tile changes which half occupies each square, and that can change whether a region’s rule is met.
- Recheck affected regions after each placement. A domino may span squares governed by different rules, so both halves matter.
- Finish by checking coverage and constraints. Every square needs a tile, and every colored region must meet its condition.
What difficulty levels are available?
Pips publishes Easy, Medium and Hard daily puzzles, with all three levels available on the same day, according to the NYT launch materials. Starting with Easy can help you learn the symbols; Medium and Hard provide progressively more involved constraint-solving. That suggested progression is a practical approach, not an additional game rule.
