Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo pause an eligible Netflix membership, sign in through a web or mobile browser, open Cancel Membership, choose Pause for 1 Month, and confirm. The pause does not start immediately: you can keep watching until your next billing date. At that date, Netflix skips the charge and disables streaming and downloads for one month.
Netflix automatically resumes your current plan and charges its then-current price when the pause ends unless you extend the pause or cancel it first. The option is not available on every plan or billing arrangement.
What pausing Netflix does
Pausing suspends the membership at the next billing boundary rather than when you click the button. Your existing billing period continues normally, so you retain streaming access until the next billing date.
- No charge is made at that next billing date when the pause is successfully applied.
- Streaming and downloads stop once the pause begins.
- You can still browse Netflix and add titles to My List.
- The initial pause lasts one month.
- After one month, Netflix automatically restarts the current plan and charges the current plan price unless you extend or cancel.
- Pausing keeps the membership account rather than deleting it.
Netflix documents the feature and its eligibility rules at its Pause Membership help page.

How to pause Netflix step by step
- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser or mobile browser.
- Open the Account page and select Cancel Membership.
- Choose Pause for 1 Month.
- Confirm the pause when Netflix asks.
- Check the membership details or confirmation message so you know the date on which the pause will begin and when it will end.
The control may be labeled or positioned differently by country, plan, account status, or billing provider. Netflix’s documented route is through the Account and Cancel Membership pages rather than deleting the app or signing out.
Check your billing date before you pause
Because the pause starts at the next billing boundary, verify that date before proceeding. In Netflix, open Account, then Payment History, and review the membership and billing information. Netflix generally bills monthly on the day the account was created, but time zones, shorter calendar months, and third-party billing can change the date. See Netflix’s billing-date guidance.
“One month” is therefore not necessarily 30 calendar days. Use the date shown on your account to determine when viewing will stop and when automatic resumption is expected.

How to extend a Netflix pause
Netflix offers one-month extensions approximately one week before the account is due to resume. The maximum total pause is three months.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Netflix in a web or mobile browser and go to Account.
- Find the Ready to watch? banner.
- Select Extend Pause.
- Confirm the additional month.
If Extend Pause is absent, the account may already have reached the three-month limit or the primary payment method may no longer be an eligible credit or debit card.
How to resume Netflix early
- Open the Account page while the membership is paused.
- Select Unpause Now in the Ready to watch? banner.
- Confirm that you want to resume.
Netflix says early unpausing charges the account immediately, updates the billing date, and restores streaming immediately. Do not select Unpause Now merely to inspect the account if you are trying to avoid restarting service.

Pause for 1 Month missing? Check these causes
Basic plan
Netflix says pausing is unavailable on the Basic plan. You can cancel instead, or review available plan changes. Plan-change timing and effects are explained in Netflix’s plan-change help page.
Payment method
Pause may not be offered when the account uses direct debit, a Netflix gift card, or certain partner payment methods. Gift-card or promotional balances can also allow access to continue after cancellation until the balance is used; see Netflix’s promotion information.

Partner or bundle billing
Look in the Account page’s Membership section to identify who bills you. Partner subscriptions can have different billing dates, controls, eligibility rules, and cancellation processes. If Netflix does not show a cancellation or pause control, follow the provider’s instructions. Details about package billing are in Netflix’s partner-billing guidance.

If a package containing Netflix is canceled or paused, a backup payment method may keep Netflix active. Conversely, losing the package without another payment method can cancel the Netflix account or require relinking. When moving to a new package, link the existing Netflix account rather than creating or canceling a separate one where the provider allows it; this preserves profiles, My List, downloads, and preferences.
Apple billing
Most new or returning members cannot start Netflix billing through Apple, but some existing accounts still use it. If the Netflix Account page has no cancellation control and Apple is the listed provider, manage the subscription through Apple. Netflix says Apple cancellation places the account on hold for 30 days before complete cancellation, and Apple’s policy may require cancellation more than 24 hours before renewal to avoid another charge. See Netflix’s Apple-billing instructions.
Existing pause or payment hold
An already-paused account may not show normal plan controls. An account on hold because of a payment problem can also behave differently; consult Netflix’s payment-hold guidance.

Account or regional interface differences
Labels and availability can vary by country and account. If the option is absent, inspect the Membership and Billing sections, identify the payment provider, and use that provider’s cancellation process rather than assuming the account is paused.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pause or cancel: which is better?
| Situation | Usually better choice |
|---|---|
| You expect to return within one to three months and want automatic restart | Pause |
| You do not know when you will return or want no automatic future charge | Cancel |
| You use Basic, direct debit, gift-card, or unsupported partner billing | Cancel or use the provider’s process |
| You still watch but want a lower monthly cost | Downgrade; it takes effect on the next billing date and does not stop recurring billing |
| You want a different future billing date | Cancel and restart on the desired date |
| Netflix is included in a package | Check package rules and relinking before canceling |
Pause is convenient but carries an automatic restart. Cancellation is safer for an indefinite break, but you must restart manually later.
What happens if you cancel instead?
Canceling during a paid billing period normally leaves Netflix watchable until that period ends; it does not usually stop access the moment you click cancel. Netflix says it retains viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and certain game saves for 24 months after closure if you restart within that period. Restart instructions are available at Netflix’s restart help page.
Deleting the Netflix app, signing out, blocking a card, or removing a payment method is not a substitute for cancellation. If only one payment method is stored, Netflix says it cannot be removed without adding another first, and removing it does not end the membership. See Netflix’s payment-method guidance.
If you were charged after trying to pause
Check these possibilities in order:
- The next billing date had not arrived, so the current period was still active.
- The pause was not confirmed successfully.
- The pause expired and the account resumed.
- You selected Unpause Now, which triggers an immediate charge.
- Apple or a bundle provider continued billing separately.
- A package changed while a separate Netflix payment method remained active.
Compare the Netflix Account page, Payment History, confirmation email, and the relevant bank, Apple, or partner statement. Netflix’s partner and payment records guidance is at help.netflix.com/en/node/41049.
Prevent someone else from restarting the membership
If another household member can access the account, change the Netflix password and choose the option to sign out of all devices. Do this after canceling when preventing an unauthorized restart is important. Netflix recommends this procedure in its membership guidance.
