Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a clearer, steadier YouTube livestream, match resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the upload bandwidth your connection can reliably sustain. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; choosing the highest available settings without that margin can cause dropped frames or buffering. Test the complete setup before the event, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and use viewer reports to distinguish a local playback issue from a stream-wide fault.
Choose live settings as a set
Resolution and frame rate affect how much detail and motion the stream carries. Codec and bitrate affect how much data the encoder sends to YouTube. Choose them together, based on both the material and the connection—not simply the maximum your encoder offers.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are live-stream recommendations, not the separate settings for uploading prerecorded videos. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
Use YouTube’s recommended target for your chosen codec, ingestion resolution and frame rate. The following figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. They are video bitrate targets, so leave room for other traffic and any backup stream when planning total outbound bandwidth.

| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube also lists minimum bitrates, which are lower bounds in its table, not recommended targets. For AV1/H.265 followed by H.264, the minimums are: 2160p60, 10/14 Mbps; 2160p30, 8/11 Mbps; 1440p60, 6/8 Mbps; 1440p30, 5/7 Mbps; 1080p60, 4/6 Mbps; 1080p30, 4/5 Mbps; 720p60 and 720p30, 2/3 Mbps; and 480p30 and 360p30, 0.3/0.4 Mbps. A minimum is not a sensible default if you want the recommended quality.
Use the advanced settings your workflow exposes
YouTube’s advanced guidance includes square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. It specifies 8-bit SDR and 10-bit HDR. For audio, it recommends stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with AAC required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. AV1 at 3840×2160 and above requires at least two tile columns. Some encoders hide or manage these details; do not treat every item as a setting that must be manually changed in every workflow.
For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its guidance mentions HLS as an option if an encoder cannot provide the required RTMP capabilities.

Plan upload bandwidth and connection headroom
YouTube says the total outbound stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. When using a backup encoder, count the primary and backup bitrates before adding that margin. Download speed is often higher than upload speed, and other people and devices on the network can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. A speed test is a useful check, but does not guarantee that the connection will sustain the same performance throughout an event. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Measure upload capacity at the venue and around the time you expect to stream. Check upload, not only download.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate and codec, then select the corresponding recommended bitrate from YouTube’s live table.
- Keep the total bitrate—including a backup feed, if used—within available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Account for other network users and traffic. If the available capacity varies, lower the stream target rather than planning around the best speed-test result.
A wired connection can reduce dependence on a variable Wi-Fi link, but it cannot create more upload bandwidth or guarantee reliability. YouTube describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production-value events; its guidance does not establish that a particular encoder model will improve a given stream.
Set latency for the kind of broadcast you are making
Latency is the time between capture at the camera or encoder and playback for viewers. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but may increase playback buffering. If the broadcast is a documentary screening, lecture or other program with little audience interaction, faster response may matter less than resilient playback. Choose based on the event rather than automatically selecting the lowest latency.

YouTube says the “improve for low-latency” option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; those streams use normal latency. The available choices and labels can depend on the stream setup. YouTube’s overview of stream settings also explains DVR, which lets viewers pause, rewind and resume from their paused point: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.
Protect and configure the stream key
The stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address. Treat it as secret: do not share it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends obtaining a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.

A test should exercise the actual picture, sound, network and backup path—not just confirm that the encoder can connect. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” The same guidance recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s published operational recommendations; its help pages do not show a publication date.

- Set a conservative target. Select a bitrate and video format that fit measured upload capacity with the recommended headroom.
- Test representative content. Include the motion, audio routing, overlays and scene changes planned for the event. Confirm that the encoder is receiving the intended sources.
- Start early and inspect the preview. Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before announcing the broadcast.
- Verify playback and failover. Check that the event appears on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. If a backup encoder is part of the production, test the primary-to-backup handoff.
- Confirm the local archive. Check that the recording is intact and its file is growing. A local archive gives you a way to inspect what the encoder produced.
- Monitor throughout the broadcast. Watch stream-health messages, picture, audio and archive progress. Stop the encoder after YouTube’s event has stopped.
How do I stop my YouTube livestream from buffering?
First determine whether the problem is limited to one viewer or appears across viewers on different networks. A single viewer’s buffering may come from that device or internet connection; multiple viewers on one shared network may point to that network. Reports from viewers on different networks make the stream, encoder or source more likely suspects.
- One viewer reports buffering: compare playback on another device or connection before changing the encoder settings.
- Several viewers on one shared network report it: check that audience network’s capacity and competing traffic.
- Viewers on different networks report it: inspect stream health and encoder output, then follow the checks below.
Check whether the encoder’s outbound bitrate is sustainable and whether upload capacity is being shared. If the connection cannot reliably carry the configured stream, reduce bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate. Lower latency can also increase playback buffering, so use it only when interaction needs justify the tradeoff.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does my YouTube stream look blurry or sound poor?
Work from the source outward. If the picture or sound already looks poor in the encoder preview, check the camera or media source, focus and audio routing before changing YouTube settings. If the encoder preview looks right but viewers see a problem, check encoder errors and stream health, CPU load, the local archive and outbound internet. YouTube recommends updating encoder software when troubleshooting poor stream output. If the feed looks healthy but the connection is problematic, test outbound internet and contact your ISP.
