To keep a YouTube stream running around the clock from a VPS, match the server to your encoding workload, reserve enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen bitrate, send through RTMPS where supported, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. A process restart can recover from an encoder crash, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
This guide covers a prerecorded loop and OBS-based workflows. For a simple file loop, a headless FFmpeg process is often the more direct setup; choose OBS when you need scenes, overlays, browser sources, or a graphical interface. YouTube’s current encoder guidance should drive the output settings—not a VPS vendor’s example specifications.
Choose the streaming workflow before the VPS
FFmpeg for a straightforward prerecorded loop
If you need to repeat a prepared video without scenes or interactive sources, FFmpeg can run headlessly on a Linux VPS. This avoids maintaining a desktop session and can be resource-efficient when the source is already encoded and does not need to be transcoded. The actual load depends on your input, output settings, and whether FFmpeg must encode video.
OBS for scenes and visual composition
OBS is a better fit when the stream depends on scene changes, overlays, browser sources, or GUI-based controls. Those elements—and software encoding in particular—can change CPU and memory needs substantially. A provider’s published sizing examples illustrate this difference, but they are estimates rather than independent workload benchmarks; test your own scene collection before committing to a server size. See Space-Node’s guides on running a 24/7 livestream on a VPS and VPS options for YouTube streaming.

Set the output to YouTube’s encoder requirements
Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as the starting point. Its guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following figures are YouTube Help’s H.264 encoder recommendations for standard live ingest, accessed in 2026. They are not VPS specifications or guarantees of what viewers will see:
| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube publishes separate recommendations for H.265 and AV1; use the row for the codec and frame rate you actually configure rather than applying H.264 figures to another codec.

Keyframes, rate control, and audio
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Set keyframes at the recommended 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- For audio, YouTube’s guidance gives 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1-channel audio.
- Keep the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate consistent between your encoder and the YouTube ingest configuration.
Size the VPS for the real workload
Resolution alone does not determine the server requirement. An already-encoded file sent without video transcoding has a different CPU profile from software encoding. OBS scenes, browser sources, filters, multiple simultaneous streams, and GPU availability also affect the calculation. Storage must hold the media you plan to play locally.

Space-Node’s 2026 examples list 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM for a 720p FFmpeg loop, 2 cores and 4 GB RAM for a 1080p FFmpeg loop, and 4 cores and 4 GB RAM for 1080p OBS software encoding. These are provider-authored starting points, not independently measured minimums or a promise that those configurations will suit your workload. Another Space-Node guide gives different baselines for OBS scenes and browser sources. Begin with a plan that matches your chosen encoder, then monitor real sessions and scale if measurements show a bottleneck.
Check the provider’s network terms
Your VPS needs sustained outbound capacity above the configured stream bitrate, with headroom for operating variation, and a traffic allowance that covers continuous use. Confirm the provider’s egress cap, uplink terms, region, and route quality to YouTube ingest. A nominal uplink speed or an “unmetered” label does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

As one provider-specific illustration, Space-Node estimated about 1 TB per month at a continuous 2.5 Mbps bitrate. That is a vendor estimate, not a universal measured statistic; actual monthly traffic depends on bitrate and uptime. Check your own plan’s traffic accounting before launching.
Prepare YouTube Studio and protect the stream key
- Confirm live access: make sure your channel can start a live stream, then create or configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Do not assume every new channel has immediate live access.
- Get the ingest details: copy the stream key and the appropriate server URL from the YouTube live control room or encoder setup.
- Store the key as a credential: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. Limit access to the people and processes that need it.
- Choose output settings: select a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration based on YouTube’s current guidance.
Connect with RTMPS
Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, documents the secure ingest endpoint, port 443, and SNI for TLS authentication. Use the correct RTMPS URL and preserve the required TLS/SNI behavior in your client or network configuration.

If the encoder cannot connect, verify that the endpoint is actually RTMPS, that outbound port 443 is reachable, and that the client handles TLS and SNI correctly. Also recheck the copied server URL and stream key.

Run a preflight test, then launch
- Start with representative content: include the audio and motion that the continuous stream will actually contain.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube and confirm that the expected video and audio arrive before treating the setup as ready.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. A process showing as active on the VPS does not prove a healthy ingest.
- After launch, continue watching stream health and relevant encoder and system logs. Check CPU, memory, disk, and network use during representative sessions.
YouTube’s guidance explicitly advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. A brief test with a static image or silence may not reveal problems that appear with your actual motion, audio, or encoding load.
Make recovery part of the setup
Run FFmpeg or OBS under a process supervisor, or configure the encoder’s reconnect behavior, so an encoder failure can trigger a restart or reconnection attempt. Keep logs and establish a regular check or alert routine. A supervisor can restart a failed process; it cannot detect every bad output, fix a VPS host outage, or confirm that YouTube has resumed receiving a healthy stream. Verify the stream at YouTube after recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a VPS approach and review its limits
- General-purpose VPS: offers control over the operating system, encoder, and service configuration, but you handle setup and ongoing maintenance.
- Streaming-oriented VPS: may reduce some setup work, but confirm exactly what is managed and what remains your responsibility.
Before choosing either, compare sustained outbound bandwidth and traffic policy, available CPU and memory for your encoder, GPU access if you need it, local media storage, region and route to YouTube ingest, restart and reboot behavior, console access, support, and the impact of a host outage. Verify current price, egress limits, hardware, renewal terms, location, and support directly with the provider. No VPS plan should be treated as a guarantee of continuous YouTube uptime.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common VPS streaming problems
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Confirm the stream key and ingest URL match the broadcast you configured in YouTube Studio.
- Check that the channel can go live and that the broadcast is ready to receive the encoder.
- For RTMPS, verify the endpoint, outbound port 443, and TLS/SNI handling.
The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health
- Compare the configured codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Measure sustained outbound use and check for traffic caps or network contention; do not rely only on a provider’s advertised uplink.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio, then use YouTube’s stream health messages to narrow down the issue.
The encoder crashes or stops
- Review encoder logs and VPS CPU, memory, and disk use around the failure.
- Check whether an OBS scene, browser source, filter, or software-encoding workload exceeds the server’s available resources.
- Use a supervisor or reconnect behavior for recovery, then confirm in YouTube that the stream is healthy again.
The stream fails after a server reboot or provider interruption
- Check that the encoder service is configured to start again after reboot and that its media paths and credentials remain available.
- Use provider console access to diagnose a host or network problem; a process restart cannot repair an outage at the VPS provider.
- Verify the broadcast at YouTube after service returns rather than assuming a restarted process means viewers are receiving the stream.
