There is no single best live-stream setting. Choose a bitrate that fits your platform, codec, resolution and frame rate, then make sure your connection can sustain it under real streaming conditions. If frames drop, troubleshoot the connection and ingest route before assuming the encoder is at fault.
Choose the bitrate for your platform and video format
Bitrate is the amount of data your stream sends each second. Higher bitrates can preserve more detail, especially in fast-moving footage, but they also demand more from your upload connection. A platform’s recommended bitrate is a starting point—not proof that your internet connection can hold it steadily.
YouTube’s published recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or universal targets; check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before setting up a stream because recommendations can change.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p60 H.264 stream has a higher YouTube recommendation than a 1080p60 AV1 or H.265 stream. Don’t copy a bitrate from another resolution, frame rate, codec or service and assume it will suit your stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match resolution and frame rate to the footage
Use a frame rate that suits the source material and the motion you need to show. If you are streaming documentary footage that was recorded at 30 fps, a 60 fps output setting does not add real motion detail; it can increase the amount of data and encoding work. Conversely, fast motion may benefit from a higher frame rate if your source, encoder and connection can support it. Choose the resolution and frame rate first, then select the corresponding platform recommendation as a bitrate reference.
Leave headroom on the upload connection
Run an upload speed test and assess whether the connection is stable, not just whether it reaches a high peak once. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing bitrate-related dropped frames. Treat that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a platform target: other network use, service limits and upload variation can still make a stream unstable.

Set the encoder and connection for YouTube Live
YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265 or AV1, and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers.
- Rate control: Set the encoder to CBR for YouTube’s stated requirement.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.
- Codec: Select a supported codec your encoder and destination can use, then consult the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps; set an output rate that suits your source and intended motion.
For an encoder-based stream, enter the destination’s ingest details and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: don’t publish it or share screenshots that reveal it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the destination’s account tools before streaming again. The exact controls and labels vary by encoder and platform.

Balance latency against quality
Latency is the delay between the live event and what viewers see. Lower latency can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but the options available depend on the platform and can constrain other settings. On YouTube, low latency is unavailable for 2160p (4K) streams; YouTube delivers those at normal latency.
Choose a latency mode based on the event rather than automatically selecting the lowest one. A stream built around live questions or audience response may value shorter delay. A documentary screening or continuous programme may place more weight on picture quality and steady delivery. Whichever mode you choose, confirm that it is available for your selected resolution and test it with the intended audio and movement before the event.

Test the whole stream before going live
- Confirm the destination’s current requirements. Check its supported ingest protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. YouTube’s recommendations above are a guide to its published settings; don’t apply them to another service.
- Measure upload performance. Test the connection you will use for the event, preferably at a representative time and with other expected network activity in place.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable pre-stream test. Include movement and audio similar to the planned programme. A static desktop or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with real content.
- Check the picture and sound at the destination. Look for visible breakup, freezes, audio dropouts and sync problems, as well as warnings in the platform’s stream-health display.
- Keep monitoring during the event. Watch stream health and review platform messages so you can respond if conditions change.
YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured ingest stream: test the actual stream and monitor its health.

OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or that the configured bitrate is too high for the connection. If enough frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. OBS’s official troubleshooting guide is dated 2024-09-30; its diagnostic steps are useful, but menus and network conditions can vary.

- Try a different ingest server. A poor route to one server can cause trouble even when general internet use seems normal. OBS notes that Windows users streaming to Twitch can use TwitchTest to identify servers with better quality scores.
- Lower the bitrate. Reduce it in measured steps and retest. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, while emphasizing stable upload speed and the destination’s limits. A lower value may make delivery more stable but can reduce image quality.
- Check whether the issue is service-specific. Test another destination if practical. If only one service is affected, that points toward a service or route-specific issue rather than proving the encoder itself is failing.
- Use Ethernet to rule out Wi-Fi instability. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. If Ethernet resolves the problem, investigate Wi-Fi coverage or interference before returning to wireless.
- Check software that can interfere with network traffic. OBS lists VPNs, security software and bundled network utilities as possible sources of interference. Temporarily testing without them may help isolate the cause; restore protections and settings afterward.
- Review network hardware and ISP conditions. Restarting or checking a modem, router or other network equipment may help, but congestion or changes on the provider’s side can be outside your control. Contact your ISP if the issue persists across services and devices.
- On Windows, consider OBS’s network troubleshooting options. Its guide lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as settings some users report help with. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can adjust bitrate downward when the connection cannot keep up. This may reduce dropped frames, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and the lower bitrate can reduce image quality. If you enable it, keep investigating the network rather than treating the adjustment as a permanent cure.
Choose settings differently for Twitch or another destination
Do not carry YouTube’s numerical recommendations over to Twitch or another platform. Twitch’s official broadcasting guidance covers bitrate, resolution, frame rate and encoder choices, and its Enhanced Broadcasting documentation describes client-side encodes and automatic stream configuration. Those features and settings can change; verify the current Twitch dashboard and official documentation for your account before choosing numbers. A stable connection and a test stream remain important whichever destination you use.
