Normalize each finished podcast episode in an audio or video editor before sending it to YouTube. First fix uneven dialogue, then measure and apply a consistent loudness workflow, control peaks if needed, and listen to the rendered file and episode transitions. YouTube’s published guidance specifies encoding settings—not a podcast LUFS target or required normalization method.
What normalization does—and what YouTube’s settings do
Loudness processing changes the perceived level of an episode so it sits more consistently alongside other episodes. Encoding settings such as codec, sample rate, and bitrate determine how audio is packaged or transmitted; changing them does not normalize volume.
YouTube’s official upload and live-stream guidance does not prescribe a podcast loudness target in LUFS, a true-peak ceiling, or a particular normalization algorithm. Treat any target you choose as part of your own repeatable production workflow, not as a YouTube requirement.
How to normalize a podcast episode before streaming
- Start with the finished mix. Work on the edited episode rather than trying to correct loudness through YouTube’s stream settings. YouTube advises using editing software to edit audio and video tracks before uploading when resolving upload audio or video issues (YouTube Help: troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads).
- Fix uneven sections first. If one speaker, segment, or passage is much quieter or louder than the rest, adjust it in the editor before applying whole-program loudness normalization. A single gain change raises or lowers the file as a whole; it does not even out inconsistent passages.
- Measure integrated loudness. Use your editor’s loudness measurement or a loudness meter, then apply the same chosen workflow to episodes in the series. Select a target appropriate to your audience and distribution plan. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a required value such as −14 LUFS or −16 LUFS.
- Control peaks only if needed. If raising the overall level would cause peaks to clip, use a limiter carefully. Listen for distortion, pumping, or flattened dynamics. The cited YouTube sources do not set a mandatory true-peak ceiling.
- Export for the delivery path. Use encoding settings appropriate to whether you are uploading a finished video or feeding audio to a live encoder; see the settings below. These settings affect encoding, not loudness.
- Listen to the rendered result. Check the opening, a quiet section, the loudest passage, and the transitions between episodes. A measurement can help make processing consistent, but listening is how you catch distracting changes and artifacts.
What audio settings should I use for YouTube?
Keep uploaded-video recommendations separate from live-encoder recommendations. They describe audio encoding, not a loudness target.

| Delivery path | YouTube’s listed audio guidance | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Uploaded video | AAC-LC; 44.1 or 48 kHz; 128–256 kbps | Upload troubleshooting guidance for the audio track. It does not specify LUFS or normalize volume. |
| Live stereo encoder input | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps | Live encoder guidance for stereo audio. It does not specify a loudness target. |

Test the sound before the stream
Before a live stream, test with audio and video movement similar to what you plan to run, then monitor stream health and audio quality during the stream. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” (YouTube live encoder settings; see also YouTube live streaming tips.)

For a podcast playlist, include representative episodes and listen across the joins. This is a practical check of the prepared audio, not a separate YouTube loudness rule.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prepared podcast episodes to loop as a YouTube live stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.

Common problems and fixes
- One section is still too quiet after normalization: correct that passage’s level in the editor before applying whole-program normalization; a global gain adjustment cannot fix an internal level jump.
- The episode sounds distorted or unnaturally compressed: review peak control and limiter use, then listen again to loud passages. Do not treat a platform bitrate setting as a remedy for clipping or uneven loudness.
- Episodes sound different from one another: use the same measurement and processing workflow for each finished episode, then compare the rendered files and their transitions by listening.
- The stream sounds wrong despite an acceptable local file: verify the live encoder’s audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s live guidance, run a representative test stream, and monitor stream health. Encoding settings and loudness processing address different problems.
Optional hardware
A dedicated recorder is not required to normalize an existing episode; software processing can do it. Zoom’s PodTrak P8 documentation describes analyzing a file’s loudness and automatically optimizing it for podcasting, which may be convenient for creators who already use that recorder (Zoom PodTrak P8 documentation). Listening headphones can help with quality checks, but YouTube does not mandate a model.
