To multistream to Instagram Live and YouTube, connect both destinations to a hosted relay such as Restream, then send it one live feed from OBS or another encoder. You must still launch the Instagram broadcast in Instagram after the encoder preview appears. Before scheduling, confirm that Instagram Live Producer and a stream key are available on your account, and that YouTube live streaming is enabled.
Before you start
Check Instagram access and limits
Restream’s instructions dated April 22, 2026 say Instagram Live Producer requires a Professional account and that public accounts with at least 1,000 followers can go live. The same instructions state a one-hour limit, require a refreshed stream key for each broadcast, and say to keep the Live Video tab open. These are Restream’s published requirements; access can vary by account, so confirm Live Producer and the key are available before planning your event. Restream’s Instagram guide
Enable YouTube live streaming
Restream’s YouTube guide, dated July 9, 2026, says first-time streaming requires phone verification followed by a 24-hour wait. It also says the connected Google account must be the channel owner, not a manager or editor. YouTube has no stream-duration limit according to that guide, but it says only streams shorter than 12 hours are archived. Restream’s YouTube guide
Choose the picture shape
Instagram’s recommended format is vertical, while a YouTube audience may be watching a conventional horizontal frame. Decide which viewers matter most and design the composition accordingly. A vertical frame can make a horizontal documentary or interview difficult to read; a horizontal frame may leave unused space in Instagram. The cited guidance does not establish an automatic per-destination reframing workflow, so do not assume one will adapt the picture for you.

Set up a hosted relay with OBS
A hosted relay receives one encoder feed and distributes it to connected destinations. Restream documents adding Instagram by stream key and connecting YouTube through account authorization, and supports OBS and other major streaming software. Restream’s Instagram integration overview
- Prepare YouTube. Sign in as the channel owner and enable live streaming if you have not already done so. Complete phone verification and allow the stated first-use waiting period before the event.
- Connect YouTube to Restream. In Restream, add YouTube as a channel and authorize the Google account that owns the channel. Check that the intended channel appears as a connected destination.
- Open Instagram Live Producer. On desktop, open Instagram, choose Create, then Live video. Set the title and audience, then copy the stream key shown for this broadcast. Restream says the key must be refreshed for each new stream.
- Add Instagram to Restream. Add Instagram as a destination and paste in the current stream key. Keep Instagram’s Live Video tab open while streaming; Restream says closing it can interrupt the workflow.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, set the output to the relay’s server and stream key as shown in its current connection instructions. Use the relay’s provided ingest details rather than guessing a server URL or reusing an old key. Select a layout that remains legible for both destinations.
- Match settings to both platforms. For Instagram Live Producer, Restream recommends 9:16, 720×1280, 30 fps (60 fps is the stated maximum), video bitrate of 2,250–6,000 Kbps, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with a maximum audio bitrate of 256 Kbps. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 configurations, up to 60 fps; it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Restream’s settings guide and YouTube’s encoder settings provide platform details. Avoid treating one bitrate as ideal for both outputs: choose a compatible common configuration and test the composition and connection before going live.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for Instagram Live Producer to show the incoming preview and confirm the relay shows the destinations you intend to use.
- Start Instagram Live. Click Go Live in Instagram. Starting OBS or the relay sends the feed but does not, by itself, launch the Instagram broadcast.
- End in the right order. When finished, end the broadcast in Instagram first. Then stop the encoder or relay. Restream warns that stopping only in the encoder or Restream can leave the Instagram video frozen for four minutes.
Encoder choices that affect both audiences
Resolution, frame rate and composition
Instagram’s listed recommendation of 720×1280 at 30 fps is a vertical-oriented target. YouTube’s encoder guidance allows higher frame rates, but that does not mean both destinations benefit from pushing the same production to the maximum. A talking-head interview, lecture or documentary discussion may be clear at 30 fps; motion-heavy content may benefit from a higher frame rate if the encoder, upload connection and both destinations support it. Keep titles, captions and important visual details inside the visible frame for each platform.

Bitrate, keyframes and transport
Use the Instagram bitrate range as a constraint when choosing a shared feed, and follow the relay’s current ingest requirements. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP; the server, application path and port must all match the ingest service’s settings. Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation
Alternatives to a hosted relay
Direct multi-output from OBS
Sending separate outputs directly from software can give an experienced operator more control, but it adds setup and compatibility work. OBS’s plugin compatibility page lists the Multiple RTMP Outputs plugin for certain OBS Studio 28 Windows and macOS variants; that page is dated August 31, 2022, so it is not confirmation of present-day compatibility or a current installation guide. Verify the plugin’s current support and each platform’s output requirements before relying on this route. OBS Studio 28 plugin compatibility

Which route fits?
- Hosted relay: a simpler central setup when you want one encoder feed and a destination manager. Confirm the service’s current plan supports both destinations.
- Direct software outputs: an advanced option when you need separate output control and can verify the current plugin and OBS compatibility. It may require more configuration than one relay feed.
Common problems and fixes
- No Instagram preview: confirm the encoder is sending to the relay, Instagram is connected with the current stream key, and the Live Video tab remains open. Refresh the key for a new broadcast if necessary.
- Preview appears but Instagram is not live: click Go Live in Instagram after the preview arrives; the encoder start alone does not launch the broadcast.
- YouTube destination cannot go live: check that live streaming is enabled, any first-time verification and wait are complete, and the authorized account owns the channel.
- One audience sees a poorly framed picture: review the composition for vertical and horizontal viewing, including captions, lower thirds and edge content. A single frame may require a deliberate compromise.
- Instagram video freezes at the end: end the broadcast in Instagram before stopping OBS or the relay.
- Connection or ingest errors: confirm the relay’s current server and key, the selected protocol and port, and the encoder’s bitrate and keyframe settings. Do not assume YouTube’s preferred settings alone satisfy Instagram or the relay.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before broadcasting a documentary, film excerpt, music bed or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for live use on both platforms. A live setup does not grant distribution rights. Review the current rules for the content and accounts you control, and test with material you are authorized to show. Keep an eye on platform notices during the broadcast; a multistream relay cannot guarantee that a platform will accept or keep a stream available.

For a different use case—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube channel stream—StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud rather than from your live OBS session. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera or multistream to Instagram.
