For a first stream, choose between sending a separate output from your computer to every destination or sending one output to a cloud relay that distributes it. Then check each account’s eligibility and rules, configure the destinations, and run a test before announcing the broadcast.
Choose how your stream will reach each platform
The key difference is where the work of sending multiple copies happens. With direct outputs, your computer sends a stream to each platform. With a cloud relay, your computer sends one stream to a service, which forwards it to the destinations you connect.
| Consideration | Direct outputs from your computer | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Home upload demand | Multiple outbound streams add up. Compare their combined target bitrates with your stable upload capacity. | Your connection sends one incoming feed to the relay; the relay handles distribution. |
| Computer workload | More outputs can require additional encoding and system resources. | Avoids encoding and uploading a separate feed for each destination from your computer. |
| Setup | Configure each destination and output; the steps depend on the encoder and software. | Connect destinations to the relay, then send your encoder output to the service. |
| Control and dependencies | Connects directly to the platforms, though software or plugin support can vary. | Depends on the relay’s current destination support, limits, and terms. |
| Often suits | Creators with enough upload capacity and computing resources who want direct connections. | Beginners who prefer one outbound connection or have limited upload capacity. |
YouTube describes both local multi-encoding and cloud mirroring as possible approaches, while Restream documents an OBS-to-relay workflow. Neither approach is right for everyone: account mix, connection stability, computer workload, service terms, and whether you need a different version of the program for each platform all matter. See YouTube’s guide to streaming across platforms and Restream’s OBS relay guide.
Check platform eligibility and rules first
YouTube readiness
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have live streaming enabled, and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The streamer must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast day. YouTube’s help also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; these are operational rules that can change, so confirm the current requirements for your account in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.

Twitch simulcasting
Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ says its guidelines apply unless you have an agreement with Twitch requiring exclusivity. It requires the Twitch viewer experience not to be worse than the experience on other services and says not to use Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream. Twitch specifically says that “shrinking the size of, or otherwise degrading, the video quality on Twitch so that it’s worse than on other platforms would make the user’s experience on Twitch less than other services and, therefore, not meet these guidelines.” Check the current guidelines and any agreement that applies to you before going live.
Other destinations
Make sure each account is active and in good standing. Depending on your chosen workflow, you may need the destination’s RTMP server address and stream key. Confirm that your relay or software currently supports every platform you plan to use; integrations and service limits can change.

How to multistream with OBS
OBS is useful when your program needs scenes, overlays, gameplay capture, or external audio and video. Its basic setup is not a promise that every computer can handle every resolution, frame rate, scene, and encoder workload. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard and a test stream; meeting the listed system requirements alone does not guarantee capacity for your particular setup.
- Choose your destinations and delivery route. Decide whether OBS and your computer will send separate outputs directly or send one output to a relay. For direct outputs, confirm that your software supports the workflow and estimate the combined upload demand. For a relay, check current destination support and terms.
- Prepare YouTube and other accounts. Enable YouTube live streaming and complete verification ahead of time. Create the YouTube live event and obtain its stream URL and key if your workflow requires them. Get the corresponding connection details for other destinations when needed. Treat stream keys like passwords: do not show them in your stream or share them.
- Configure OBS. Open OBS and follow the OBS Quick Start Guide, starting with Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Add the necessary source—such as a game, window, display, or camera—then select the intended microphone and other audio devices. Review Output settings for your chosen encoder and delivery method. If sending through a relay, use the connection details the relay provides.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the correct video is visible and that the intended microphone’s audio meter moves. Listen for unwanted desktop audio, muted inputs, clipping, or obvious sync problems. A webcam, phone, console, or computer may be enough for a basic stream; an external microphone, webcam, or headphones are common options, not mandatory purchases. OBS can also use a webcam or capture card as a video capture source if your setup calls for one.
- Run a private or short test. Check the preview, audio levels and sync, dropped frames, and stream status at every destination. OBS recommends testing before the real broadcast. Results depend on your system, encoder settings, network stability, scene complexity, and platform; system compatibility alone does not guarantee the intended workload will succeed. Review the OBS system requirements.
- Monitor the live destinations. Keep a way to check each platform’s stream health and read its chat. Verify that the program is visible and audible at each destination, and continue to follow its rules during the broadcast.

Estimate the upload capacity for direct outputs
For direct outputs, add the target bitrates of all simultaneous streams to estimate the upload demand. YouTube illustrates the arithmetic with one stream at 6 Mbps and another at 4 Mbps, for a combined target of 10 Mbps. That is an example of adding bitrates, not a universal bitrate recommendation for a particular resolution or platform. Allow practical headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic, and test on the connection you will actually use.
A relay changes the home connection’s job: it carries one incoming stream rather than a separate outbound stream for every destination. The relay still depends on a stable connection from you, and its current destination support and terms should be checked before choosing it.

Keep the program and rights suitable for every destination
Multistreaming does not remove the need to follow each platform’s rules. Check the current live-streaming and content policies for every destination, including copyright requirements, before using music, video clips, or other material you did not create or license. A stream that is permitted on one service is not automatically cleared for another. This guide does not establish that any particular reused material is authorized or that a broadcast will qualify for monetization.

- YouTube will not let you start a live stream: Check channel verification, live-stream activation, any restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and whether initial enablement is still pending. First activation may take up to 24 hours.
- One or more destinations are offline: Confirm the account is active and in good standing, the destination is supported by your software or relay, and the correct current server address and stream key are configured. Recheck the destination’s status separately from the encoder preview.
- The local stream drops frames or becomes unstable: With direct outputs, compare the combined target bitrate to stable upload capacity and reduce the outbound workload if needed. Check connection stability and test again; a nominal speed reading does not establish performance under your actual conditions.
- The computer struggles as destinations are added: Additional direct outputs may increase encoding and system load. Review OBS’s output setup and system guidance, simplify the scene or encoding workload, or consider a relay to avoid producing and uploading a separate local feed per destination.
- The picture or sound is missing or wrong: In OBS, check the selected source and audio device, inspect audio meters, and verify the destination preview. A successful encoder connection does not by itself confirm the right scene, microphone, or mix is being sent.
- The Twitch version looks worse or points viewers elsewhere: Review Twitch’s current simulcasting guidelines. They prohibit degrading the Twitch experience relative to other services and using Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream, subject to any applicable exclusivity agreement.
- A relay destination or limit does not match an old guide: Check the service’s current support list, plan, and terms. Integrations and destination counts can change.
Optional equipment for a first stream
You do not need to buy special hardware just to multistream. YouTube identifies an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as common choices for gaming and casual creators, but existing equipment may be enough. If you want to improve voice quality, a USB microphone is one possible category to consider; no particular model is established here. A capture card is only relevant if your setup needs an external video input, not a universal requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I multistream from a phone or console without OBS?
A webcam, phone, or console can be enough for a basic stream, but the exact multistream workflow depends on the device, destinations, and software or relay available to you.
Does a cloud relay mean I can ignore Twitch’s rules?
No. Twitch’s simulcasting guidelines still apply to your Twitch broadcast, regardless of how the stream is delivered.
