You can move an OBS playlist stream without rebuilding its scenes: export the scene collection, export the profile separately if you need its output settings, and copy the video and other media files the sources reference. On the new PC, import the exports, make sure the files resolve at their new paths, and check any VLC or plugin dependencies before going live.
What to transfer from the old PC
OBS keeps scene collections, profiles, and media files separate. A scene collection holds scenes and sources, including global audio sources, but not output settings. A profile holds settings such as Stream, Video, and Output, but not scenes. Neither export makes the playlist’s referenced video files portable. See OBS’s guides to scene collections and profiles.
- Scene collection: the scenes and sources you have arranged.
- Profile: the stream, video, and output configuration, if you want to carry it over.
- Media and other files: playlist videos and any images, audio, or overlays used by file-backed sources.
- Separate dependencies: VLC, if the playlist uses an OBS VLC Video source, and any plugins your scenes or filters require.
Move the playlist stream step by step
- Identify the active scene collection. On the original PC, check which collection contains the playlist stream and scenes you want to move.
- Export the scene collection. Use OBS’s Scene Collections controls to export it, following the official collection guide.
- Export the profile separately if needed. If you want the old stream, video, and output settings, export the active profile using OBS’s Profiles controls. A profile is not a substitute for the scene collection; see the profile guide.
- Collect the files the sources reference. Make a list of every playlist video and other file-backed source used by the relevant scenes. Copy those assets to the destination PC. A USB drive or external SSD can be convenient transfer storage, but OBS does not require a particular device.
- Install OBS on the new PC and import the exports. Import the scene collection and, if you exported it, the profile. OBS notes that import also adjusts collections created on another operating system for the current one.
- Choose how to handle file paths. Either recreate the original directory structure so the old paths still work, or edit the affected sources on the new PC to point to the copied files. OBS’s portable-mode guidance describes these options for relocated collections.
- Install separate dependencies. If the playlist uses the VLC Video source, install VLC on the destination; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, according to OBS’s Media Sources guide. For plugin-dependent scenes or filters, install compatible plugins and consult each plugin’s documentation for moving its settings.
- Check the scenes before going live. Open each relevant scene and confirm the playlist and other file-backed sources load and play. Check plugin-dependent sources and filters separately, then verify the stream configuration in the imported profile or set it up on the destination.
Keep the same paths or update them?

Portable mode changes where OBS loads its configuration; it does not bundle the media files. OBS states in its portable-mode documentation: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” The same guide says portable mode is not supported on macOS or Linux.
Check VLC and plugins separately
VLC playlist source
If your playlist is an OBS VLC Video source, the destination needs VLC installed, with the architecture matching OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Importing a scene collection does not install VLC or its libraries for you. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Plugin-based sources and filters
A collection can contain sources or filters that depend on plugins, but importing the collection does not install those plugins or guarantee that their settings transfer. Install compatible plugins on the destination and use each plugin’s own instructions for its configuration. OBS’s Plugins Guide describes plugin locations, not a universal method for migrating every plugin’s settings.
Troubleshooting after import
- A video, image, or audio source is missing: its saved path may not exist on the new PC. Restore the original folder structure or edit the source to use the destination path.
- The playlist source will not play: check whether it is a VLC Video source. If so, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS.
- A scene or filter behaves differently: check whether it depends on a plugin, then install a compatible version and follow that plugin’s settings-migration instructions.
- Your scenes are present but stream output settings are not: import the profile separately; scene collections and profiles carry different information.
- The imported collection came from another operating system: OBS says its import feature adjusts collections created on other operating systems to the current one. Still check media paths and dependencies on the destination.
