Mounting an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Block Volume gives a compute instance disk space for files such as a locally maintained playlist index; it does not download or mount YouTube videos. For a large playlist, retrieve its entries separately with the YouTube Data API, which returns up to 50 items per request. The two parts can work together: store your application’s permitted local data on the mounted volume while fetching playlist entries through the API.
Understand what gets mounted—and what does not
An OCI Block Volume is a block device attached to a compute instance. After it is connected and prepared by the guest operating system, it behaves like a hard drive. A YouTube playlist, by contrast, is represented by YouTube API resources. Mounting a volume does not transfer playlist videos or turn the playlist itself into a disk.
This distinction matters when planning storage. A volume may hold an application’s local index or other data you are permitted to store. Playlist entries are obtained from YouTube through the API; the playlistItems resource describes those entries rather than supplying the video files. See Oracle’s Block Volume overview and Google’s YouTube Data API playlistItems reference.
Choose and attach an OCI Block Volume
- Select the instance and volume. In the OCI Console, create or select a compute instance and a Block Volume in the appropriate region and compartment. Attach the volume to the instance.
- Choose an attachment type your setup supports. Oracle documents iSCSI and paravirtualized attachments. Paravirtualized attachment is available for qualifying VMs and avoids extra guest-side iSCSI connection commands. iSCSI is required for some instance and older-image cases; Oracle’s overview says it offers greater IOPS than paravirtualized in its documented comparison. Confirm current compatibility for your shape and image rather than assuming either type is available.
- Connect the device. Paravirtualized volumes connect automatically after attachment. For iSCSI, connect and log in from the guest operating system, or use Oracle’s Block Volume Management plugin to automate connection where it is supported and configured. Oracle states: “For volumes attached with Paravirtualized as the volume attachment type, you don’t need to perform any additional steps after attaching the volumes; they’re connected automatically.” Follow the current Oracle connection instructions for the selected attachment.
If the volume uses Ultra High Performance, check Oracle’s current eligibility and multipath requirements before relying on its performance tier. The relevant attachment may need to be multipath-enabled for optimal performance; requirements depend on the shape and image. See Oracle’s Block Volume documentation.

Prepare and mount the volume in Linux
- Inspect the guest’s disks. Oracle’s Linux tutorial uses
sudo fdisk -lto inspect available devices. Confirm the newly attached device by its identity and size before acting on it. - Decide whether it is genuinely new and empty. Formatting creates a filesystem and can destroy existing data. Do not format a volume merely because it has just been attached; first verify that it is the intended device and that it contains nothing you need.
- Prepare the filesystem only when appropriate. For a verified new, empty volume, create a filesystem suitable for the operating system and workload, following Oracle’s current Linux volume formatting tutorial. The exact device name and filesystem choice depend on the instance and your needs.
- Create a mount point and mount the filesystem. Once the filesystem is ready, create a directory to use as the mount point and mount the volume there. Verify that the expected filesystem is mounted at that path before using it for application data.
Oracle’s tutorial describes inspecting disks and preparing a new volume for formatting and mounting. Device names and commands beyond that inspection step depend on the guest image and attachment; use the matching Oracle guidance rather than copying a device path from another instance.
Make the mount persist after reboot
A manual mount may not be enough if the instance restarts. To mount the filesystem at boot, configure /etc/fstab using Oracle’s instructions for the relevant device path and attachment. Oracle documents approaches for consistent device paths as well as traditional paths, with required options that vary by setup. Do not treat a generic fstab line as universally correct: Oracle warns that omitting required options can prevent a Linux instance from launching. Check the connection guide or attachment guide for the exact configuration before rebooting.

Retrieve every entry in a large YouTube playlist
Use the YouTube Data API separately from the OCI mount. The playlistItems.list method returns at most 50 playlist items in a request. For a larger playlist, request a page with the playlist ID and a page size of up to 50, then make another request using the returned nextPageToken. Continue until there is no next-page token. The API response contains playlist-entry metadata, not the actual video files.
Each playlistItems.list call costs one quota unit. Google’s quota guide describes a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most endpoints, but this is a baseline, not a guarantee for every project. Check your project’s actual quota and usage in Google Cloud Console. The allocation rules for some methods, including search.list and videos.insert, differ; do not apply the 10,000-unit figure universally. Consult the current method reference and quota guide.

Plan for shared access and performance carefully
- One instance: attach and mount the volume on the instance that needs it, following the connection and filesystem steps above.
- Several instances: OCI does not coordinate concurrent writes across shared attachments. Do not have multiple instances read and write the same volume as though it were an ordinary shared filesystem; use a cluster-aware filesystem or another appropriate coordination layer first. See Oracle’s shared-volume documentation.
- Performance-sensitive workload: validate the current shape, volume configuration, attachment type, image support, and—where Ultra High Performance is used—multipath requirements. No single IOPS or throughput figure can be assumed for an unspecified configuration.
- Large playlist index: estimate the number of API pages from the playlist size, then account for one quota unit per page request and check the project’s actual daily allocation and usage.
Troubleshooting
The volume is attached in OCI but does not appear in Linux
Attachment and guest connection are separate steps. Check the selected attachment type: paravirtualized volumes connect automatically, while iSCSI normally requires a guest-side connection and login unless the supported management plugin is configured to automate it. Recheck the matching Oracle connection steps for the image and instance.
The device appears, but mounting fails
Confirm that you selected the intended device and that it has a filesystem. A new, empty volume may need filesystem preparation; an existing volume should not be formatted as a troubleshooting shortcut. Check the guest’s device and filesystem information, then follow Oracle’s instructions for the chosen attachment and Linux image.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The mount disappears after a reboot
A mount made manually may not be configured to return at startup. Review /etc/fstab against Oracle’s guidance for the actual device path and attachment. Missing required options can prevent Linux from launching, so correct and verify the entry before rebooting.
The playlist fetch stops before the final item
Check that the client follows each response’s nextPageToken and continues until the response has no next-page token. Also check the playlist ID, API errors, and the project’s quota usage; each page request costs one unit.

Several instances need to write to the same volume
Shared attachment alone does not coordinate concurrent writes. Stop treating the volume as a conventional shared filesystem until a cluster-aware filesystem or other coordination solution is in place.
