Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a quick manual check, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the broadcast’s stream health and status messages. For unattended monitoring, use the YouTube Live Streaming API to check whether YouTube is receiving encoder data and whether it reports stream-health issues. Neither check alone proves that viewers can play the public broadcast, so add a viewer-side check when continuous availability matters.
What “still broadcasting” means
A 24/7 station can fail at different points. The encoder may stop sending data; YouTube may receive data but report a configuration or quality problem; or YouTube may show an active incoming stream while the public broadcast is not watchable. Treat these as separate signals rather than relying on one “live” indicator.
- Encoder and ingestion: Is the source still sending data, and is YouTube receiving it?
- Stream health: Has YouTube detected a configuration or quality issue?
- Viewer availability: Can a viewer-facing player load and play the broadcast?
Check a live station manually in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the channel’s Live Control Room.
- Select the ongoing broadcast and inspect the Stream health area and its status messages. Read the issue details, not just the preview image.
- Use real-time analytics, including duration and concurrent viewers, as context. These are audience indicators, not definitive source-health signals.
- Check the encoder’s own status or logs as well. They can help distinguish a source-machine or network problem from an issue on YouTube’s ingestion side.
YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics while streaming in Live Control Room: See your live stream’s metrics. This is a practical dashboard for an operator who is present; do not assume it automatically texts or emails you when a stream fails.
Automate checks with the YouTube Live Streaming API
The API exposes distinct stream and broadcast states. The liveStream resource’s status.streamStatus indicates whether YouTube is receiving encoder data, while status.healthStatus reports detected health conditions. The broadcast also has its own lifecycle state. Google’s broadcast guide says an active stream status indicates that YouTube servers are receiving data from the encoder; it does not establish that public playback works: Life of a Broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify the resources. With authorized access to the channel’s broadcast resources, identify the
liveBroadcastand its boundliveStream. Credentials and permissions depend on the application and account setup. - Read stream status and health. Use
liveStreams.listto retrievestatus.streamStatus,status.healthStatus, and any configuration issue details. Record the observation time so you can spot stale updates. - Define alert conditions. Consider alerting on a change to
inactiveorerror, healthStatus: bad, andnoDataor stale health information. Use a debounce or consecutive-check rule to reduce alerts from a transient observation. - Check the broadcast lifecycle. Confirm that the associated broadcast state is
live; an active incoming stream and a live broadcast are not the same state. - Test the viewer side separately. Where your setup allows it, check the public watch page or the private monitor stream. The monitor stream is a preview of how the broadcast would look to viewers, not a guarantee that every viewer, device, or network can play it.
- Include useful context in alerts. Record the channel or broadcast identifier, first-seen time, stream and health states, issue types, and encoder or site health if available. When service recovers, record when each check cleared.
The API reference documents the stream resource and its status fields: LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API. YouTube does not prescribe a monitoring interval, alert threshold, notification route, or availability guarantee in these references. Choose polling and debounce behavior according to your outage tolerance and API quota; confirm current permissions and quota for your implementation.
Interpret the signals without overclaiming
| Signal | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
streamStatus: active |
YouTube is receiving data from the encoder. | That the public broadcast is live or playback works for viewers. |
streamStatus: inactive or error |
The incoming stream is not active or has an error state. | The root cause by itself. |
healthStatus: good |
No configuration issue at warning severity or worse was reported. | That every viewer can play without failure. |
healthStatus: ok |
No configuration issue at error severity was reported. | That there are no warnings. |
healthStatus: bad |
At least one configuration issue has error severity. | That the entire broadcast is unwatchable. |
healthStatus: noData |
YouTube’s backend has no health information for the stream. | Whether the cause is the encoder, network, API timing, or YouTube. |
| Concurrent viewers or duration | Audience and broadcast context. | A reliable binary uptime test. A low or zero viewer count alone does not establish an outage. |
| Public player or monitor stream | A viewer-oriented availability check or private preview. | That every geography, device, or network can play without issue. |
Troubleshoot a health warning or apparent outage
When the API or Studio reports a problem, inspect the specific issue type and text before changing settings. The Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources reference includes audio bitrate, codec and sample-rate problems, as well as video configuration, bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe timing, and primary/backup stream mismatches.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- YouTube reports inactive or error: Check whether the encoder is still running, whether it is sending to the intended stream, and whether its network connection can upload. Compare encoder logs with the API status to narrow down where transmission stopped.
- Health is bad: Open the issue details and compare the encoder’s audio and video output with the reported problem. If using primary and backup streams, check that their configurations match where required.
- Health is noData or stale: Do not assume the encoder is the cause. Check the last update time, API response, encoder status, and viewer-side playback before assigning the failure.
- Ingestion is active but viewers report trouble: Check the broadcast lifecycle and public player. A private monitor preview can help, but neither it nor active ingestion proves playback for every viewer or network.
- Video is not smooth: Check the encoder output and available upload connection, then select a quality appropriate to the actual uplink. YouTube recommends testing before the broadcast with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health while live.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current guide rather than treating one bitrate as universal. In the accessed guide, H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 720p30; those are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums for a radio station’s static visual. The guide also recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
