To find out whether a Mac mini YouTube stream is struggling because of local performance, network delivery, or YouTube ingest, check three views together: Activity Monitor, OBS, and YouTube Live Control Room. Activity Monitor shows system-wide CPU and network activity; OBS reports stream and encoding problems; YouTube shows platform-side stream health. None is a substitute for the others.
Check your Mac mini’s CPU in Activity Monitor
- Open Activity Monitor. Select the CPU tab to see how processor capacity is being used.
- For a live graph, choose Window > CPU Usage. For a graph of recent activity over time, choose Window > CPU History.
- Look at the CPU breakdown while the stream is running. Apple defines System as capability used by macOS processes, User as capability used by apps and their processes, and Idle as capability not currently in use.
- If you want a quick glance without keeping the main window in front, choose View > Dock Icon > Show CPU Usage to display a live CPU graph in the Dock.
A high User reading can point you toward an app doing substantial work, while System activity reflects macOS processes. Treat these readings as context, not a standalone verdict: compare them with OBS’s own performance indicators and the timing of any visible stream problem.

See network throughput in Activity Monitor
- In Activity Monitor, select Network.
- Review Data received/sec and Data sent/sec to see current throughput. The pane also reports packets in and out, packets per second, and total data received and sent.
- Use the graph menu to choose Data for data throughput or Packets for packet activity.
- For a Dock view, choose View > Dock Icon > Show Network Usage.
Activity Monitor reports network activity for the Mac as a whole. It does not isolate OBS or the YouTube stream, so other apps’ traffic can affect the totals. Use the numbers to observe whether the Mac is sending data and how activity changes, but do not assume the entire sent rate belongs to the stream.

Use OBS to distinguish encoding trouble from delivery trouble
When OBS reports encoding overload or choppy output, check Activity Monitor for resource-heavy programs and use OBS’s performance troubleshooting guidance. OBS specifically recommends Activity Monitor as part of investigating performance on macOS. A busy Mac and a delivery problem can look similar in the finished stream, so check OBS’s indicators rather than diagnosing from the viewer’s picture alone.

OBS treats increasing dropped frames as a connection warning: the path to the streaming server may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Compare the configured bitrate with tested upload capacity and investigate the connection path if dropped frames rise. A high system-wide sent rate in Activity Monitor does not, by itself, establish that OBS is delivering successfully.

Check YouTube’s stream health before and during the broadcast
- Before going live, test your available upload bitrate.
- Run a representative test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. A test that omits the real workload may not reveal the same issues.
- Choose encoder resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the available internet connection in mind. YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges depend on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current table for your actual configuration rather than applying one number to every stream.
- During the broadcast, monitor stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and note when any warning appears alongside OBS’s dropped-frame or performance indicators.

Locate the bottleneck by comparing the three views

Use timing to connect the evidence: note whether CPU activity, OBS indicators, or YouTube health messages change when the visible problem starts. These are distinct diagnostic views, not interchangeable measurements. The distinction follows Apple’s descriptions of system activity, OBS’s explanation of dropped frames, and YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
