Use AWS Elemental Workflow monitor to map supported services in a media workflow, then monitor each failure mode with the service’s own metrics, alerts, logs, events, or CloudTrail records. The map helps show connections; it does not replace service-level diagnosis or prove that every production dependency has been discovered.
Choose a signal that matches the question
A media workflow can fail in different ways, and no single dashboard answers them all. Decide what you need to detect before choosing a monitor:

| Operational question | Useful signal | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is a resource in the expected state? | Service state and service alerts | Whether a service reports a state change or a condition it has detected. |
| Is media flowing, and is its quality or health changing? | Service metrics and logs | Trends and threshold conditions over time, with logs supplying operational detail. |
| Are viewers’ requests or playback behavior affected? | Request logs, relevant metrics, and manifest evidence | Request-level behavior and clues such as whether a manifest is being updated. |
| Who changed a resource or called an API? | CloudTrail and service events | API activity and audit context; events can also trigger actions when resources change. |
Metrics are time-series data suited to trends and alarms. Service alerts report conditions detected by a service; events can drive actions; logs retain operational details; CloudTrail helps answer API-accountability questions. Treat them as complementary evidence, not interchangeable views.
Start with Workflow monitor’s signal map
AWS Elemental Workflow monitor is available through the AWS console and API. Its documented discovery covers connected AWS Elemental MediaConnect, MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, Amazon S3, and Amazon CloudFront resources. Do not assume that an unlisted service, every dependency, or every resource in an account will appear automatically.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Inventory the real path. Record the MediaConnect flows, MediaLive channels or multiplexes, MediaPackage channels or channel groups and origin endpoints, and any relevant MediaTailor, S3, or CloudFront resources. Include dependencies that operators know are part of production.
- Start discovery from a supported resource. Open Workflow monitor in the AWS console or use its API and initiate discovery from a supported resource in the workflow. AWS describes the result as a signal map of discovered connected resources; the exact console path can vary as AWS updates its interface.
- Validate the map against production. Compare its connections with the workflow inventory and actual delivery path. Investigate missing or unexpected links rather than treating the diagram as authoritative topology.
- Choose an alarm template group, if it fits. AWS provides recommended groups for different services and workflow types. They contain curated metrics and predefined settings, and imported templates can be customized. A template is a starting point, not evidence that its defaults meet your service-level objective.
- Review and deploy deliberately. Check each metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, and evaluation period against the failure you need to catch. Add custom templates for important signals the selected group does not cover. Workflow monitor converts templates into CloudFormation templates for repeatable deployment; review the generated resources and notification or action routing before applying them.
- Exercise the route safely. In an authorized environment, validate that a controlled operational exercise produces the intended alarm or event and reaches the right responder. Do not assume a configured rule is working until its end-to-end path is checked.
Use service-level monitoring to diagnose the map’s blind spots
MediaLive: separate state, alerts, media metrics, logs, and API activity
MediaLive exposes distinct views for channel and multiplex state, service alerts, CloudWatch metrics, channel or multiplex logs, schedule activity, and API-call logs. Use the view that matches the symptom: state and alerts for reported service conditions, metrics for trends, running or schedule logs for operational detail, and API records when investigating changes or calls. AWS’s MediaLive metrics guide says metric retention is 15 months; retention alone does not guarantee that a dashboard, alarm, or log contains the evidence needed for a particular incident.
MediaPackage: combine metrics with request and manifest evidence
MediaPackage monitoring includes CloudWatch metrics and alarms, access logs, CloudTrail, and events. Request access logs can help investigate delivery behavior. Manifest update headers can help troubleshoot stale manifests in workflows without dynamic ad insertion.

Check which MediaPackage generation the workflow uses before selecting metric names, namespaces, dimensions, or dashboard instructions. AWS’s MediaPackage v2 documentation says its metrics are published every minute, if not sooner, and describes 15-month CloudWatch retention. Those v2 details should not be applied to an earlier MediaPackage generation without checking its own documentation.
MediaConnect: select a supported dashboard period
AWS documents 15-month retention for MediaConnect metrics. Most can be viewed with periods as short as one second, but Gateway metrics require a period of at least one minute. If a Gateway metric is absent or unavailable at a one-second period, change the period to one minute or longer before treating that display as an outage. A short period does not by itself establish that an alarm will detect a problem at that same latency.

CloudTrail and events: investigate changes, not media quality
When the question is who changed configuration or called an API, use CloudTrail’s API activity rather than inferring the answer from a metric graph. Events can support operational actions on resource changes, while metrics and service logs remain the better evidence for flow health and behavior. Confirm that the event rules, permissions, and destinations in your own account cover the actions you need to observe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set thresholds and notification routes for your workflow
AWS’s recommended alarm templates provide curated metrics and predefined settings, but there is no universal threshold that suits every channel, input, packaging path, or delivery objective. For each alarm, document the condition it represents, the expected evaluation behavior, and who should act on it. Tune using your own operating target and the relevant current AWS service guidance.

- Use a metric alarm for a measured value or trend that can be compared with a threshold.
- Use a service alert where the service reports a detected condition that is meaningful to operators.
- Use an event rule when a resource or alarm event should trigger a notification or action.
- Use logs when the responder needs the sequence or detail behind a symptom.
- Use CloudTrail when accountability for API calls or configuration changes matters.
Workflow monitor itself has no direct charge according to its guide, but resources it creates or uses can incur charges. AWS identifies possible CloudWatch and EventBridge charges, S3 storage or recall costs for deployment templates, and MediaPackage preview data-transfer costs. Check the current AWS guide and your account’s pricing before deploying; the total depends on the resources and usage involved.
Troubleshoot common monitoring gaps
| Symptom | Likely reason | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A resource or connection is missing from the signal map. | The resource may be outside the documented discovery set, not connected as expected, or not discovered from the supported starting point. | Compare the map with the inventory and production path; confirm the resource type is among the supported discovery services. |
| An alarm fires, but the media workflow appears healthy. | The imported threshold, statistic, comparison, or evaluation period may not match the workflow’s operating objective. | Review the alarm’s complete configuration and compare it with the metric’s normal behavior and the intended failure condition. |
| No alarm arrives after a condition or test. | The metric may not be the right signal, the event/rule or notification route may be incomplete, or the test may not have produced the expected condition. | Trace evidence from the service metric or alert through the alarm/event rule to the configured destination, using a controlled exercise. |
| A MediaConnect Gateway metric is not available at a one-second period. | Gateway metrics require a period of at least one minute. | Choose a one-minute or longer period for that metric. |
| A MediaPackage manifest looks stale. | The issue may concern manifest updates rather than a general resource-state metric. | Inspect relevant request logs and manifest update headers; first establish whether the workflow uses dynamic ad insertion, since the cited header guidance is for workflows without it. |
| A dashboard uses unfamiliar MediaPackage metric names or dimensions. | Documentation differs by MediaPackage generation. | Identify whether the workflow uses v1 or v2 and consult the matching generation’s metric documentation. |
