Use CloudWatch to watch whether AWS Elemental MediaLive is processing and writing output, and YouTube Live Control Room to check how YouTube is receiving that stream. These views answer different questions: CloudWatch shows MediaLive-side activity; YouTube shows destination-side health. Neither alone proves that every viewer can play the broadcast.

What to monitor—and what each view can tell you

Monitoring view What it observes What it can miss
Amazon CloudWatch metrics and alarms MediaLive processing and output activity, using metrics dimensioned for the relevant channel, output group, and pipeline. Whether YouTube is successfully ingesting and processing the stream, or whether every viewer can play it.
YouTube Live Control Room YouTube’s stream health, status messages, and real-time analytics as the destination receives and processes the stream. All MediaLive-side processing details, and the playback experience of every individual viewer.

Use the two timelines together: a CloudWatch alarm can identify a MediaLive-side change, while a timestamped YouTube message can point to an ingest-side issue. AWS describes MediaLive metrics as near real-time and says they are retained for 15 months (AWS MediaLive CloudWatch metrics documentation).

Set up a useful CloudWatch view first

Find the metrics for the actual channel output

  1. In CloudWatch, open the MediaLive metrics and select the dimensions for the channel, output group, and pipeline relevant to the YouTube output.
  2. Check the live channel’s configuration and the current AWS console or API to confirm the metrics and dimensions available for that output. The relevant output group and pipeline depend on the channel configuration.
  3. Graph output activity and dropped-frame metrics over the same time range. Establish what normal startup, steady-state operation, and any intentional pause look like before you define alarm thresholds.

AWS’s output-metric documentation describes ActiveOutputs as a direct signal of output activity. A value of zero means none of the outputs are being successfully written to their destinations. It also notes that zero can be intentional when the output is configured to pause on input loss (AWS MediaLive output metrics).

Read the main signals in context

  • ActiveOutputs: Use it to detect an expected output that has stopped being written. AWS explicitly recommends the Minimum statistic to identify when one or more outputs is not being produced. Check the output-group, channel, and pipeline dimensions so the alarm corresponds to the output you intend to monitor.
  • Dropped frames: AWS says zero is expected and means MediaLive is processing incoming frames in real time. A nonzero value merits investigation in its time series and pipeline context; set an alarm based on your tolerated interruption window rather than assuming a universal AWS threshold.
  • NetworkOut: This counts traffic sent from MediaLive, including media output and other traffic such as HTTP GET requests for pull inputs, NTP, and DNS. It can add context, but traffic alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  • Output4xxErrors: AWS documents this for HTTP delivery. It may not be the right signal for a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS destination.

Do not treat missing datapoints as a zero reading. AWS documents metric-specific meanings for absent data; for example, a channel may not be running or may not be generating output audio. Interpret gaps using the metric’s documentation and the channel’s state.

Create alarms around failures that matter

Choose thresholds from the channel’s normal behavior

  1. For an expected output disappearing, configure an alarm on ActiveOutputs with the Minimum statistic, then choose the comparison, threshold, period, and datapoints to alarm that fit your response needs.
  2. For frame-processing problems, graph dropped frames and choose the statistic, period, threshold, and datapoints that detect an unacceptable interruption without paging on harmless variation.
  3. Review startup, scheduled pauses, and pause-on-input-loss behavior before enabling notifications. A zero ActiveOutputs value during an expected pause can otherwise produce a false alarm.
  4. Test the alarm and its notification path, and document who responds and how the YouTube-side view will be checked.

There is no universal threshold prescribed for a MediaLive-to-YouTube stream in the cited AWS guidance. CloudWatch alarm behavior depends on the metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, and number of datapoints; tune those to the specific channel and the interruption you can tolerate (AWS workflow monitor alarm templates).

Keep event notifications separate from metric alarms

MediaLive can emit channel alerts as CloudWatch events, which an event rule can route to destinations such as Amazon SNS. AWS describes event emission as best effort, so use these alerts as a separate notification route rather than a replacement for metric alarms aimed at service-level failures (AWS monitoring with CloudWatch Events). If you use the workflow monitor, its reusable alarm templates let you set a target resource type and metric, statistic, comparison operator, threshold, period, and datapoints.

Check whether YouTube is receiving the stream

  1. During the event, open YouTube Live Control Room and monitor the stream health and status messages.
  2. Read the specific error text and its instructions rather than inferring a YouTube problem from CloudWatch traffic metrics. YouTube says errors are timestamped and distinguishes critical from moderate severity.
  3. Compare the YouTube message time with CloudWatch metric changes and alarm history. This helps separate a MediaLive output interruption from an ingest issue visible at YouTube.
  4. Check YouTube’s real-time analytics alongside stream health. Test the setup before the event and continue monitoring during it.

YouTube’s status and metrics guidance is in See your live stream’s metrics; its error explanations are in Live streaming error messages. Follow the current instructions shown for the particular error.

Keep encoder settings aligned with YouTube’s guidance

Correct encoder settings do not replace monitoring, but they reduce avoidable ingest problems. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-based streaming and provides supported settings and bitrate ranges that vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use the current guidance for the event’s chosen configuration rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Troubleshoot by matching the symptom to the signal

Symptom What to check Practical next step
ActiveOutputs is zero Whether the output is expected to be active; channel startup or pause state; input-loss pause configuration; correct output group and pipeline dimensions. Confirm whether the pause is intentional. If not, inspect the channel and output path, then compare the time of the change with YouTube’s status messages.
Dropped frames rise The metric time series and pipeline dimensions, along with whether the rise aligns with a processing interruption. Investigate the affected pipeline and correlate the timing with the channel’s operation and destination status.
NetworkOut is nonzero, but YouTube reports a problem YouTube’s specific health message and timestamp; remember that NetworkOut includes non-media traffic. Follow the Live Control Room error instructions and use output-specific metrics as supporting evidence, not as proof of successful ingest.
Output4xxErrors does not help explain an RTMP/RTMPS issue Whether the output uses HTTP delivery, the delivery type for which AWS documents this metric. Use metrics relevant to the actual output protocol and confirm ingest health in YouTube.
No datapoints appear Whether the channel is running and producing the metric, and the documented absent-data meaning for that particular metric. Do not substitute zero for missing data; verify channel state and metric dimensions before changing alarm behavior.
An alarm fires during a planned interruption Startup timing, scheduled behavior, and whether the output pauses on input loss. Adjust the alarm’s period or datapoints to match the operational window, or account for planned pauses in the response process.
YouTube reports an ingest error while AWS output metrics look normal The timestamped YouTube error and current encoder configuration, including protocol, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Apply YouTube’s instructions for that error and confirm the current encoder settings against its guidance.
