Monitor an Owncast-to-YouTube broadcast at two separate points: Owncast shows how its server and viewer-delivery path are performing; YouTube Live Control Room shows whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Add host monitoring and a real viewer-facing check for a fuller picture. No single dashboard proves that every viewer is receiving good audio and video.
Which parts of the broadcast need monitoring?
A 24/7 broadcast crosses several layers. Check each one rather than treating a running process or a viewer count as proof that the entire service is healthy.

Check Owncast’s Stream Performance page
Open the playback charts
Sign in to Owncast’s admin interface and open /admin/stream-health. The Stream Performance page charts video-segment download, player network speed, errors, quality changes, and viewer latency. Use changes over time to identify when playback begins to degrade and compare them with reports from viewers or events on the server.
Some detailed playback measurements depend on web players reporting their metrics. For players that do not report them, Owncast can observe segment delivery itself. These signals are useful, but they are not a complete view of every player or network path.

Interpret segment measurements within their scope
Owncast’s server-observed segment measurements describe segments served by Owncast itself. They do not represent viewers fetching segments from S3-compatible storage. If your setup uses S3-compatible storage, do not treat these measurements as a complete account of those downloads. A quiet chart is not proof that every viewer’s playback is healthy.
Check server resources and collect metrics
Use the hardware view for a quick check
Owncast’s admin hardware view provides high-level CPU, memory, and disk indicators. If one of those is under pressure, investigate the host as well as the stream: the admin indicators are not a substitute for monitoring the operating system, service, and network.

Scrape the Prometheus endpoint
Owncast exposes Prometheus metrics at /api/admin/prometheus. Its documented example uses admin basic-auth credentials. Configure your Prometheus scrape with those credentials and use HTTPS where available; protect the admin endpoint and keep credentials secret.
Owncast says its exported metric values refresh every two minutes. A scrape interval shorter than two minutes does not make those values more current or detailed. Documented gauges include active viewers, chat clients, playback errors, and internal CPU usage. Add host-level monitoring separately for service or process status, memory, disk capacity, and network availability; do not assume all of those appear in Owncast’s exported metrics.

Choose a practical collection interval
For Owncast’s documented Prometheus values, scraping every two minutes is already aligned with their refresh interval. More frequent scraping may collect repeated values rather than new information. Set alert thresholds and retention according to your own operating needs; the documented refresh interval does not prescribe either.
Check what YouTube is receiving
Use Live Control Room during the broadcast
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream-health status and any timestamped error messages. Review the incoming preview, then confirm the public watch page is accessible. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

Real-time analytics such as concurrent viewers and duration can add context, but viewer count alone does not establish that the audio and video feed is healthy. A stream can have viewers while still suffering a quality or ingestion problem.
Review encoder and network conditions when YouTube reports trouble
When YouTube reports ingestion errors, inspect the outbound route from the encoder or relay, its stream settings, and the specific Live Control Room message. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom. Its current encoder settings guidance gives bitrate recommendations by codec and resolution; consult that guidance for the settings relevant to your stream rather than relying on a single bitrate for all formats.

Build monitoring for continuous operation
Combine independent signals
A practical setup pairs Owncast’s application metrics with host or container service supervision and independent checks of the public Owncast page and YouTube destination. Owncast documents a stream-live webhook that can trigger external notification or automation. These ingredients can help an operator detect events, but the documented material does not provide a complete, guaranteed restart, failover, or recovery design for an Owncast-to-YouTube 24/7 relay.
Test failures deliberately
Before relying on automation, test the failure cases that matter to your setup: stop the Owncast service, interrupt its network path, and check what happens if YouTube drops the incoming stream. Confirm that alerts reach the right person, that any recovery action behaves as intended, and that the broadcast is actually back on the YouTube watch page. Recovery behavior is environment-specific; do not assume a webhook or process manager alone guarantees uninterrupted continuity.
Protect administrative access and stream credentials
Owncast accepts RTMP ingest on TCP port 1935 by default, using the /live path and a stream key. Its web interface defaults to port 8080. In OBS, use a custom RTMP destination and the matching Owncast stream key. Follow Owncast’s current setup documentation for configuration details, replace default credentials, and never publish stream keys or expose administrative access unnecessarily.
Triage problems by comparing layers
- Owncast service or hardware looks unhealthy: investigate the host, process or service status, resource pressure, and network availability.
- Owncast looks healthy, but YouTube reports ingestion errors: inspect the outbound route, encoder settings, and YouTube’s timestamped status messages.
- Only some viewers report playback trouble: check Owncast’s segment and player metrics, bearing in mind that player reporting varies and server-observed measurements do not cover S3-compatible segment downloads.
- The dashboard looks normal, but viewers cannot watch: test the public Owncast page and YouTube watch page directly. A dashboard signal is not a replacement for confirming the viewer-facing feed.
- The stream stops after a connectivity interruption: treat it as an incident even if the host is still running. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can mean a broken stream; verify destination health and test any recovery automation.
