Use a process supervisor such as systemd to restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit, and monitor YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy stream. These address different failure modes: a supervisor can relaunch a stopped process, while FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from some output interruptions while FFmpeg remains running. Neither one proves that the stream’s audio and video look right to viewers.
Separate process failure from stream failure
A YouTube stream can fail at more than one layer. Match the remedy to what has stopped working:
- FFmpeg exits: A process supervisor can start it again after a failure.
- FFmpeg is still running, but output is interrupted: The FFmpeg FIFO muxer has options to attempt recovery from certain output failures.
- FFmpeg is running and sending output, but the stream is unhealthy: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the viewer-facing audio and video. A running process alone does not establish that the broadcast is healthy.
A restart is not a guarantee that YouTube will treat the result as one uninterrupted broadcast or archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its documentation does not establish that an external FFmpeg restart preserves one continuous broadcast or archive.
Restart FFmpeg after an unexpected exit with systemd
On a Linux host managed by systemd, configure the FFmpeg command as a service. This illustrative unit is a pattern to adapt, not a tested copy-and-paste configuration. Use the installed FFmpeg path and your actual input, YouTube endpoint, encoding options and credential-handling method.

- Create a command or wrapper. Put the real FFmpeg command in a wrapper script, or specify it directly with
ExecStart. Confirm the binary path on the host. - Set a deliberate restart policy.
Restart=on-failureillustrates restarting after failure;RestartSec=5illustrates a five-second pause before retrying. Check the systemd manual and the host’s installed version for exact behavior. - Protect the stream key. Do not put it in a publicly shared script or logs. Use appropriately restricted file permissions or a service credential mechanism supported by the host.
- Keep operator shutdown meaningful. Avoid an unconditional shell loop that makes an intentional stop difficult. A failure-restart policy should not turn a deliberate shutdown into a battle against an automatic relaunch.
- Check the service and its logs after deployment. Confirm whether FFmpeg is running, whether it has restarted, and what error it reports. A restart loop caused by a persistent configuration error will not fix that error.
This configuration manages the process lifecycle; it does not monitor YouTube’s viewer-facing stream health. The official systemd documentation describes the restart behavior: systemd.service.
Handle some output interruptions while FFmpeg is still running
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from certain output failures without waiting for the process to exit. The following command follows the structure of FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example, with placeholders retained. It is not a universal command: adapt the input, mappings, codecs, endpoint, and options to the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest configuration.

-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
'rtmp://SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY'
-f fifo -fifo_format flvuses the FIFO muxer with FLV as its output format.-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1asks the FIFO output to attempt recovery and wait one second between recovery attempts. Confirm option support and exact behavior in the documentation for your build.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1can trade missing media for continued handling when the queue fills; dropped packets mean gaps, not flawless continuity.-reprocesses a file input at real-time rate, as in FFmpeg’s RTMP example. Do not assume it belongs on every live-capture input.
FIFO recovery is not a replacement for a supervisor: if FFmpeg terminates, there is no running process left to recover its output. It also cannot guarantee recovery from a permanent error, YouTube-side rejection, or incorrect configuration. See FFmpeg’s documentation for the FIFO muxer and RTMP protocol.

Process state and logs
Check the systemd service state and logs to establish whether FFmpeg is active, exited, or repeatedly restarting. Use the error messages to distinguish a transient failure from a persistent input, encoding, authentication, or endpoint problem. Process status cannot establish that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.

YouTube stream health
During the event, open YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health and its messages. Also check the actual stream’s audio and video. YouTube advises creators to monitor stream health and review messages; a successful process start is not a substitute for that check. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
Outbound network capacity
Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. If running primary and backup encoders, account for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate and the additional margin. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Stream key and configuration
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; reset it if it is exposed or compromised. If the encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes retrieving the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

| Setting | What to check |
|---|---|
| Protocol | YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted option. Use the endpoint and protocol configured for your stream. |
| Video codec | YouTube’s current settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1. Confirm support in the installed FFmpeg build and compatibility with your ingest configuration. |
| Resolution, frame rate and bitrate | Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. Ensure the target bitrate fits the available upload connection with the recommended headroom. |
| Rate control | YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) in its encoder guidance. |
| Keyframes | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio codec | YouTube’s settings list AAC and MP3. Confirm the chosen codec and audio mapping match the source and encoder setup. |
| Backup encoder | If one is active, plan network capacity for its bitrate as well as the primary encoder and the additional margin. |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations; the Help pages do not state a publication year here. Check the current guidance before an event because the relevant bitrate depends on the configuration. The two-second keyframe recommendation and four-second maximum are not a substitute for matching the rest of the settings to your actual stream.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Process failure or command error | Inspect the service state and logs, correct the reported cause, and let the configured failure policy restart the process. A supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg but cannot repair a bad input, unsupported option or invalid configuration by itself. |
| FFmpeg stays active but output drops | Network or output failure | Review FFmpeg’s output logs and whether FIFO recovery is configured and supported by the installed build. Recovery may not clear permanent errors or YouTube-side rejection. |
| FFmpeg runs but Live Control Room reports unhealthy stream | Ingest, encoding or stream health | Read the Live Control Room messages, inspect the viewer-facing audio and video, and verify the endpoint, protocol, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval. |
| Stream breaks during network disruption | Insufficient or unstable outbound capacity | Measure upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Include both encoder bitrates plus the margin if using a backup encoder. |
| Encoder cannot authenticate or start | Stream key or endpoint setup | Retrieve the configured key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and secure the replacement. |
| Service restarts repeatedly | Persistent command, source, credential or configuration error | Read the logs and fix the underlying error rather than relying on more restarts. Ensure the retry policy does not obscure the useful failure message. |
