Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse three separate checks: YouTube’s Live Control Room or API to see whether YouTube is receiving the stream, VPS monitoring to confirm the encoder is making progress, and an occasional check of the public watch page to verify playback. Route failures from the checks that matter to a phone notification app, then test that alerts actually arrive. No single green status proves the whole stream is working for viewers.
What “the stream is live” needs to mean
Monitoring a 24/7 stream is really three jobs. YouTube can report whether it is receiving encoder data and flag stream-health issues; your VPS can report whether the encoder and host are functioning; and a viewer check can confirm that the public stream plays. These signals answer different questions, so use them together.
| Check | What it tells you | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room or API | YouTube’s reported ingest status, stream health, and selected live metrics. | Whether the VPS encoder is healthy, or every viewer can hear and see playback. |
| VPS monitor | Whether configured process, progress, host, or connectivity checks are passing. | Whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. |
| Public watch-page check | Whether the public stream can be opened and played in the checked session. | Whether all viewers, devices, and networks have the same experience. |
Check YouTube’s view of the incoming stream
Use Live Control Room for an operator check
YouTube’s Live Control Room shows stream health and real-time metrics while a stream is running. On desktop, YouTube says stream status can include specific error messages and instructions. Open it when an alert arrives to see what YouTube reports about the incoming stream. YouTube: Fix live stream problems.
Use the Live Streaming API for an automated check
For a machine-readable check, the YouTube Live Streaming API’s liveStream resource includes status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Documented stream-status values include active, created, error, inactive, and ready. Health values include good, ok, bad, and noData; health issues may include a type, severity, reason, and description. Consult the API reference for the resource and current field details: YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams.

active means YouTube’s servers are receiving data from the encoder. It does not certify the full viewer experience. A stream that is configured or ready is not necessarily actively sending data. Likewise, noData means YouTube has no health information at that moment; it is not proof that your VPS is down. Check the detailed API status and compare its time with your VPS logs. Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide describes the relationship between stream and broadcast status: YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcast lifecycle.
Monitor the encoder and VPS separately
Set up checks for signals that can fail independently. A process can still exist while stalled, and a healthy-looking host does not prove that YouTube is receiving data.

- Progress: Track a progress signal or changing log timestamp. Alert if the encoder remains present but progress stops.
- Host resources: Watch CPU, memory, and disk space, along with sustained resource pressure relevant to your encoder.
- Outbound connectivity: Check for network errors and whether data is still being sent.
- YouTube status: If you use an API-based check, correlate its status and health with local events and logs.
For a small setup, use tools already on the VPS where possible: a service manager or process watchdog for restarts, a progress signal for detecting a stuck encoder, and a monitor that can alert when a check fails. If you already run Prometheus and Grafana, a community-contributed YouTube monitoring dashboard may be a starting point. Its listing calls for a YouTube exporter and API key; check that the exporter, permissions, and dashboard are maintained and compatible before relying on them. It is a community example, not an official YouTube product or a guarantee: Grafana dashboard: YouTube Stream Monitoring.
Send monitoring alerts to your phone with Uptime Kuma and ntfy
One documented software route is Uptime Kuma sending notifications through ntfy. ntfy provides Android and iOS apps, and its Uptime Kuma instructions describe configuring a topic, server URL, and priority. This is an example integration, not a requirement; use another notification route if it fits your monitoring setup. ntfy documentation · ntfy: Uptime Kuma integration.

- Create the checks first. Add monitors for the failure signals you need: encoder or progress, host or connectivity, and YouTube-side status if you have an API check.
- Configure the notification route. In Uptime Kuma, add the ntfy notification and enter its topic, server URL, and priority as described in the ntfy integration instructions.
- Test delivery. Send a test notification and confirm it arrives on your phone using the network and notification settings you normally rely on.
- Attach notifications to monitors. Apply the notification to each relevant monitor, then deliberately verify that a monitor state change triggers an alert.
- Include useful context. Put the failed check, event time, and a pointer to the logs or dashboard in the alert so you can diagnose it from your phone.
On Android, ntfy documents priority-dependent notification behavior: default priority or higher can sound or vibrate, and high or urgent priority can appear as a pop-over. Actual presentation depends on app and device notification settings. Confirm notification permissions and settings on your phone rather than assuming every alert will display identically. ntfy: Message priority.
An alert reports a configured check’s state change; it does not repair a failed stream. Keep your monitoring dashboard reachable from your phone. Test the notification path and a real monitor-state change instead of treating successful configuration as proof that alerts will arrive.

Check what viewers can actually play
When the audience experience matters, occasionally open the public watch page and check playback, including on a phone. YouTube’s ingest status and VPS checks do not claim to test every viewer’s audio or video. This end-to-end spot check fills that gap; it complements, rather than replaces, automated alerts.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an always-on VPS and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
