Then check the public watch page separately. A green status in either dashboard does not prove every viewer is getting uninterrupted playback.
What each monitoring check can—and cannot—tell you

YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check for errors in the stream being sent to YouTube. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. These checks cover different parts of the path, so use both.
Set up a routine for a 24/7 stream
Before relying on the stream
- Run a representative test. Include the kind of movement and audio your channel will actually stream, then review health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live and matching encoder settings to the connection.
- Verify the event from the viewer side. Check the Live Control Room preview, then open the channel or watch page and confirm it is accessible on a mobile device. For an encoder stream, YouTube also recommends checking that the local archive is growing.
- Test backup behavior deliberately. If a backup encoder is configured, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection during a controlled test. Confirm that playback rolls over to the backup, and ensure the primary and backup settings match. A configured backup alone does not demonstrate successful failover.
While the stream is running
- Observe YouTube health. Keep Live Control Room open or ensure an operator is checking it. Read each message and its timestamp. YouTube classifies red errors as critical; yellow errors can indicate degraded quality. Follow the specific instruction rather than treating color as the diagnosis.
- Observe encoder output. Check whether the output is active or reconnecting and watch the network dropped-frame count. Interpret this as information about the encoder-to-ingest connection, not as a measure of every viewer’s playback.
- Check public playback independently. Spot-check the watch page, including on a mobile device. This can catch an accessibility or playback issue that the sender and ingest indicators do not describe, but manual checks are not continuous external monitoring.
The official YouTube and OBS guidance cited here does not specify a polling interval, guaranteed alerting method, or end-to-end third-party viewer probe for unattended 24/7 streams. Arrange operator checks appropriate to your operation; do not assume a green dashboard will alert you to every viewer-side problem.
Troubleshoot by identifying which part of the stream is failing
OBS shows rising network dropped frames or disconnects
OBS attributes network drops to an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check that stable upload capacity can support the configured bitrate, and use wired Ethernet if the encoder is on Wi-Fi. Review VPNs, security software, network optimization utilities, network drivers, and possible problems with the cable, router, modem, or other network equipment.

OBS notes that dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames by lowering the bitrate, but that trades away quality and does not repair the underlying connection. Treat it as a compromise, not a network fix.
YouTube reports a stream-health or configuration error
Use the message text and timestamp in Live Control Room to narrow down when the issue began. YouTube’s documented error examples include incorrect stream format, bitrate, audio/video settings, keyframe frequency, and mismatched backup streams. Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current recommendations, including codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm primary and backup settings match.

For one specific reference point, YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists a recommended H.264 bitrate of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. That is a settings recommendation for that codec and resolution/frame-rate combination, not a reliability statistic or a universal bitrate target.
Viewers report buffering but encoder drops stay low
Low encoder drops do not rule out buffering. OBS notes that viewers have different devices, locations, and network conditions. Check the public playback experience independently and distinguish an ingest or sending problem from a viewer-specific playback issue.

The stream goes down despite a backup
Repeat a controlled failover test and observe the player during the switch. Verify that the backup is actually taking over and that its settings match the primary; do not treat the presence of a backup configuration as proof that rollover works.
Keep a practical incident record
For each interruption or degradation, record the time, the exact YouTube error and timestamp if shown, the encoder output state and dropped-frame behavior, and what was visible on the public watch page. This keeps platform-side errors distinct from encoder connection issues and viewer reports, and gives the operator a useful basis for checking whether a change resolved the problem.
