If you manage the channel, use YouTube’s live-stream dashboard for stream status and the YouTube Studio app for stream analytics. Those creator tools do not provide viewers with a documented alert when another channel’s stream stops.
First, identify what you need to monitor
Watching a lecture and checking the broadcaster’s stream health are different tasks. As a viewer, you can watch the video and listen for interruptions. As the channel owner or a manager, you can check the stream status and metrics YouTube makes available for your own broadcast. A scheduled-stream notification is a third, narrower signal: it tells you when the stream is going live, not whether it remains healthy afterward.
If you’re watching another channel’s lecture
Get a notification when a scheduled stream starts
- Open the lecture’s YouTube watch page in the YouTube app or a mobile browser.
- If the broadcast is scheduled and the option appears, tap Notify me. YouTube describes this option for upcoming live streams and Premieres. It is a start notification, not a stream-failure alarm. YouTube Help: Find live streams and Premieres.
Check that an active lecture is playing
Open the stream and periodically confirm that its video and audio are present. YouTube’s documented mobile creator tools report on the broadcaster’s stream; they do not give a viewer a control that verifies another channel’s encoder health. If playback pauses or the picture or sound disappears, refresh or reopen the watch page and check whether the channel has posted an update.
Do not treat a phone left playing as a guaranteed overnight monitor. YouTube’s help guidance recommends that broadcasters “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality,” but does not promise uninterrupted playback with a phone screen locked or a viewer-facing alert if a 24/7 stream goes offline. If you own or manage the channel
Check live status while the stream is running
- Open the channel’s live-stream dashboard or Live Control Room and check Stream status.
- Read any status message and follow its specific instructions. YouTube describes this status as the health of the stream being sent from a mobile device; the displayed errors may include corrective steps. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Review the available live figures, such as concurrent viewers, duration, and selected chat or like activity. Which metrics appear depends in part on whether you stream from a phone or an encoder. Review a stream in the YouTube Studio app
In the YouTube Studio app, open Content, tap the Live tab, select the stream, then open its Analytics card. YouTube documents this route for iPhone and iPad; the concurrent-viewer report is available at video level, and post-stream metrics may be available within minutes after the broadcast ends. Monitoring is not the same as starting a mobile broadcast
If you are setting up a lecture stream from a phone, YouTube’s mobile live-streaming eligibility requirements and available features apply. Starting a broadcast is a separate task from monitoring its health. YouTube says creators see a recap after ending a mobile stream and that an archive is created. Check YouTube’s current requirements and app instructions before relying on a particular channel or device, as eligibility and feature availability can change. If something looks wrong
- A scheduled notification does not arrive: confirm that you selected Notify me on the scheduled stream page. It is intended to announce the start, not later interruptions.
- The lecture appears frozen or silent: refresh or reopen the watch page and check the stream again. That checks what your phone is receiving, not the broadcaster’s encoder.
- You manage the channel and see a stream-status error: read the message in the live dashboard and follow its instructions. YouTube says status may include specific errors and guidance.
- A metric is missing or differs from what you expect: remember that available metrics depend on whether the broadcast is sent from a phone or an encoder. For post-stream figures, open the stream’s Analytics card in YouTube Studio.
