To earn advertising revenue from a YouTube live stream, your channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), and you must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. In YouTube Studio, turn monetization on for the stream, then choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. Enabling ads does not guarantee that an ad will run in every slot.
Check eligibility before setting up ads
Live-stream Watch Page ad revenue requires YPP acceptance and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube lists the ad-revenue threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or the applicable Shorts threshold. Meeting a threshold does not itself guarantee acceptance: the channel is reviewed and must comply with YouTube’s policies. Check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility requirements, since thresholds and feature availability can change.
Eligibility and feature access may depend on your location and channel status. YouTube’s earnings documentation notes a Russia-specific pause affecting ads and some monetization features; check current availability for your location in YouTube’s earnings information.
For the terms that apply to Watch Page ad revenue, see YouTube’s Partner earnings overview. Its stated 55% share is a share of net Watch Page ad revenue, not a per-view rate or an earnings guarantee.

Turn on monetization for a live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab for an immediate broadcast, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open the stream’s Edit → Monetization settings and switch monetization to On.
- Choose how to handle mid-roll ads: automatic, scheduled, or manual. Pre-roll and display ads are enabled automatically when stream monetization is on.
- After the broadcast, review ad revenue in YouTube Analytics with the Live filter.
For a monetized channel without rights management, YouTube also allows channel-level defaults for future streams. The documented default is monetization on with automatic mid-rolls at medium frequency; eligible channels can change those defaults. YouTube says channel-level defaults are not currently available for channels with rights management.
Choose a mid-roll setting

A 2024 YouTube comparison reported that creators who enabled automatic live mid-rolls saw over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not enabled the feature. YouTube says the comparison covered 207 countries in January 2024. It is a platform-reported average, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.

Manage ad timing during the broadcast
In Live Control Room, Delay ads can postpone automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes during an important part of the program. A five-second countdown appears before ads resume. This delay does not postpone mid-rolls you insert manually, so avoid manual placements during a moment you intend to protect from interruptions.
YouTube’s ad system decides whether a slot serves an ad. A selected break is an opportunity, not a promise: viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching, and viewers who finish or skip an ad return to the live stream. Ad timing and delivery can therefore differ from one viewer to another.

For producers who want a physical control, YouTube documents an optional Elgato Stream Deck plugin for inserting ads. It is not required: monetization and ad choices can be managed in Studio.
Check format, playback, and content restrictions
Horizontal versus vertical live
YouTube’s format comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal live streams, but not for the vertical live feed. Vertical live feed can be discovered in the Shorts feed; horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and the channel description. Both formats support memberships and gifted memberships. Choose the format around the program and audience, but do not assume vertical live feed offers the same live ad placements as horizontal streaming.

Embedded playback
Ads are turned off for a live stream when its YouTube player is embedded on an external site with auto-start enabled. If ad revenue matters, account for where and how viewers watch rather than assuming every playback surface can show ads.
Side-by-side ads and captions
Side-by-side mid-rolls appear automatically only on eligible streams. YouTube says streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads.

Rights and advertiser suitability
Copyright compliance and YouTube’s monetization policies matter. Content that is not suitable for all audiences may be age-restricted and become ineligible for monetization; advertiser-unfriendly material may receive limited or no ads. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and make sure you have the rights needed for everything in the stream, including music and footage.

Ads are only one potential revenue source. YouTube also lists Super Chat and Super Stickers, which let viewers pay to highlight chat messages or use animated images, and channel memberships, which provide recurring payments in exchange for channel perks. These features have their own availability and eligibility conditions and require the Commerce Product Module or an applicable prior agreement. YouTube Premium revenue and Shopping are broader YPP options, not substitutes for Watch Page live-ad eligibility.
YouTube states that partners who enable fan funding through the Commerce Product Module receive 70% of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. That figure concerns those fan-funding features, not live ad revenue.
