If MediaLive already produces every format your target devices need, AWS documents MediaStore as an alternative origin. The right design depends on the source, playback formats, latency needs, resilience, region and expected audience traffic.
How the AWS live-streaming path works
A live stream needs a source, an encoding stage and a path from an origin to viewers. MediaLive handles real-time encoding; MediaPackage can package outputs for different playback formats and support content protection; CloudFront distributes content to viewers. AWS’s reference architecture processes two inputs in parallel, packages adaptive-bitrate outputs with MediaPackage, and uses CloudFront for delivery.
- Source: The live feed or other content entering the workflow.
- Encoder: MediaLive transforms the incoming feed into output suitable for delivery.
- Packaging and origin: MediaPackage prepares outputs for playback formats and can provide origin functions. MediaStore is an alternative origin when MediaLive already generates the required formats.
- Distribution: CloudFront serves the stream to viewers.
These are separate services to configure, not a single switch that makes an event live. Each handoff must match the protocol, formats and access controls expected by the next part of the workflow.
Choose the source and contribution path
Begin with the feed you have and how it can reach AWS. MediaLive’s workflow wizard supports several input paths, including a MediaConnect flow, an AWS Elemental Link hardware device, a mobile phone or webcam source delivered over RTMP, and an MP4 file stored in Amazon S3 or on an HTTP server. These are wizard-supported options, not an exhaustive list of every possible MediaLive configuration. AWS also describes upstream systems that provide source content such as HLS or transport streams.

| Source situation | Documented path | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution workflow using AWS services | MediaConnect flow | Confirm the flow’s Region and use the same Region for the solution’s MediaConnect input. |
| Dedicated input hardware | AWS Elemental Link | Plan around the hardware contribution path you have deployed. |
| Phone or webcam | RTMP input | Configure a compatible RTMP source; a webcam is one optional input, not a requirement. |
| Existing file | MP4 in S3 or on an HTTP server, supported by the workflow wizard | Use this only when a file is the intended source; it is not a live camera feed. |
Choose the source path before designing outputs. Its contribution protocol and operating needs determine what MediaLive receives and what downstream systems must accept.
Encode the live feed with MediaLive
Configure MediaLive to ingest the source and encode it in real time. For viewers on varied devices or network connections, an adaptive-bitrate output can provide multiple renditions for playback to adapt among. Select output groups and protocols to suit the receiving service rather than assuming one output works for every destination.
AWS documents several downstream patterns: HLS delivery to MediaPackage over HTTPS, RTMP output to a compatible server, and SRT caller or listener operation. MediaConnect is one example of a downstream system that can handle encrypted SRT. The right choice depends on the next system in the chain.

Decide whether the event needs redundant feeds
AWS’s reference solution ingests and processes two feeds in parallel. Treat that as a resilience design choice, not an automatic property of every MediaLive channel. Decide whether the event’s operational needs justify parallel inputs and processing, then configure and validate that architecture accordingly.
Choose packaging and an origin
Use MediaPackage when you need packaging for different playback formats, related origin functions or optional DRM. AWS’s live reference solution packages adaptive-bitrate output into HLS, DASH and CMAF endpoints. MediaPackage v2’s described processing flow has an upstream encoder send HLS with AWS Signature Version 4 authorization, after which MediaPackage serves packaged output over HTTPS.
For new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group. AWS identifies LL-HLS support and recommends this route for new workflows, including glass-to-glass low-latency delivery. That does not establish a guaranteed end-to-end latency: actual latency depends on the complete source, encoding, packaging, distribution and player configuration.

If MediaLive already generates all formats required by the target devices and you do not need MediaPackage’s packaging, AWS documents MediaStore as a scalable origin alternative. Choose the origin based on the output formats and features you actually need.
| Decision | Choose this when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage or MediaStore | MediaPackage when packaging across formats or related features such as DRM are needed; MediaStore when MediaLive already emits the required formats. | Both choices still need to be configured as origins for the delivery path. |
| Standard live delivery or MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest with LL-HLS | Consider the v2 CMAF Ingest path for a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, particularly when low latency is a design goal. | AWS identifies low-latency support, but the documentation cited here does not quantify a guaranteed glass-to-glass result. |
| One feed or parallel feeds | Use parallel feeds when the event’s resilience requirements call for that architecture. | The two-feed design belongs to AWS’s reference solution; a single-feed setup is not automatically redundant. |
Configure CloudFront to deliver the stream
- Set the origin. Use the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container that matches the architecture you selected.
- Match cache behaviors to output paths. Manifests and media segments need behaviors that fit their paths and formats. AWS’s CloudFront guidance gives examples such as
.m3u8for HLS manifests,.tsfor transport-stream segments and.mp4for CMAF segments. Apply patterns that match the actual endpoint output; do not assume these extensions cover every configuration. - Configure origin authorization where required. In AWS’s MediaPackage reference architecture, CloudFront sends an authorization header containing a CDN Identifier so MediaPackage can authorize requests from CloudFront. That solution stores the identifier in AWS Secrets Manager. This is a reference-architecture pattern that must be implemented correctly, not an automatic feature of every DIY deployment.
- Validate playback through the distribution. Check that the selected player can request the manifests and segments through the configured behaviors and that origin authorization works as intended.
Format, player compatibility and cache behavior must be checked together. A manifest can load while its segment requests fail if the path patterns or origin configuration do not match the endpoint.

For latency-sensitive delivery, the recommended MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest route and LL-HLS support are relevant design options, but they do not remove the need to assess the entire end-to-end path. Source contribution, encoding, packaging, CDN behavior and playback all contribute to the result. The available AWS material does not establish a single latency figure that applies to every deployment.
Resilience likewise comes from architecture and configuration. The AWS reference uses two parallel input feeds and parallel processing; a deployment using one feed should not be described as having that same redundancy. Plan for the failure modes that matter to the event and verify the behavior of the chosen architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Estimate costs and check regional availability
AWS’s deployment guide provides scenario estimates, not a general price quote. It estimates approximately $69.74 for a one-hour SD-540p event with about 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia), comprising about $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. The estimate assumes specific bitrates and viewer traffic, assumes consumption of the highest bitrate, excludes test-player storage, and may change with AWS pricing.

The same guide estimates approximately $1,505.60 for a one-hour event with about 10,000 viewers at its HD-1080p profile under the guide’s stated assumptions. This is also a scenario estimate, not a current quote or a price that can be generalized to other regions, traffic or configurations.
Use current AWS pricing for the intended Region and traffic profile. Encoding channel, input and output configuration, package ingest and origination, and CloudFront delivery are material cost areas. Audience size, bitrate ladder, event duration, cache behavior and viewer geography affect the estimate, so calculate against planned or measured usage rather than extrapolating from the examples.
MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions. Check AWS’s current regional services information when planning and deploying; availability can change. If MediaConnect supplies the input, the solution must use the same Region as that flow.
Operational checks before going live
- Confirm the input is reaching MediaLive and that the selected output group speaks the protocol expected by the next service.
- Check that the MediaPackage or MediaStore origin exposes the formats your target players need.
- Verify CloudFront behaviors against actual manifest and segment paths, including the extensions in use.
- Test origin authorization from CloudFront when the design uses an authorization header or CDN Identifier.
- Test playback on the intended player and device set through the CloudFront distribution, not only at the encoder or origin.
- For a redundant design, verify both input paths and the parallel processing arrangement rather than assuming redundancy from the service choice alone.
- Recheck regional service availability and cost assumptions close to deployment.
