Moderate Super Chats and Super Stickers as live-chat messages: apply your channel’s held-message settings and blocked-word filters, and have trusted moderators review the feed. A payment does not exempt a message from YouTube’s Community Guidelines. For a 24/7 stream, build a clear coverage and handover plan so chat does not go unreviewed when moderators change shifts.
Set up moderation before the stream
Choose a held-message level
In YouTube Studio, review the live-chat moderation controls in Content controls. YouTube currently describes three levels: None, Basic, and Strict. Basic holds potentially inappropriate messages; Strict holds a broader range. Held messages stay hidden unless a moderator acts on them. Showing one publishes it in chat at its original entry time; leaving it alone keeps it hidden. YouTube cautions that no automated detection system catches everything. Configure filters and participation limits
Add channel-specific blocked words and review any link controls in Studio. These filters can catch messages containing or closely matching configured words, but they are not a substitute for human judgment. If the feed is too fast or abuse becomes difficult to manage, consider slow mode or participation restrictions. Slow mode limits how frequently each user can post; channel owners, moderators, and members are exempt from the limit described in YouTube’s help guidance. The available controls and their location can change, so check the current Studio interface. YouTube’s channel moderation settings guidance covers channel-level settings.
Assign the right moderators
Give trusted people only the permissions they need. Standard moderators can remove content, timeout or hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have additional controls, but YouTube says moderator permissions do not grant access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. Review Super Chats during the livestream
Use the live-chat feed to assess paid messages under the same rules as other chat. A Super Chat’s paid status, visibility, or pinning does not make its content immune from moderation. YouTube says Super Chats and Super Stickers can be moderated the same way as live-chat messages, and they remain subject to Community Guidelines. YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Stickers guidance explains the policy.
- Clear violation: remove the message and, if needed, apply a user-level action.
- Held message: a moderator with the necessary controls must show it to publish it. Otherwise it remains hidden.
- Unclear case: follow your channel’s escalation policy rather than treating payment as a reason to approve or overlook it.
YouTube lists timeout choices of 10 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 24 hours. Hiding a user makes their messages and comments invisible to other viewers without notifying that user. Use removal for the message and timeout or hide for recurring or serious conduct, according to your channel policy.

Make moderation workable around the clock
YouTube’s guidance describes moderation tools, not a required 24/7 staffing rota, response-time target, or handover procedure. Set those operational rules yourself so paid messages and held items do not accumulate unattended.
- Assign coverage periods and name the moderator responsible for each handover.
- Record your escalation rules for threats, spam, suspected scams, and borderline cases.
- Tell incoming moderators what is still in the held queue and what actions have already been taken.
- Set expectations for checking the feed and queue during each coverage period; do not imply that YouTube guarantees a review time.
What happens to a Super Chat after moderation?
Deleting a Super Chat after the livestream does not issue a refund. YouTube says that when it moderates a Super Chat or Sticker for a policy violation, YouTube’s portion of the revenue is donated to charity; that is distinct from a creator-issued refund. Creators receive 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google, calculated after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees are deducted. YouTube currently covers transaction costs such as credit-card fees. These are YouTube’s stated terms, which can change; consult its current Supers help page for account-specific and current details.

After the livestream
You can review live-chat history and Supers, and YouTube Analytics provides revenue reporting for Supers. The live chat itself is not available after the stream ends, although a replay may be available on the archive by default. Keep in mind that deleting a Super Chat post-stream does not refund the buyer.
