For a remote guest, create a separate mix-minus: send the guest the host and other program audio they need, but leave out that guest’s own audio. Then check the stream mix and guest return in a short test recording before going live.
Plan where each audio source needs to go
Before changing settings, list the sources and decide which destinations each one needs: the public program, the operator’s headphones, and—if applicable—the remote guest’s return. Typical sources include the host microphone, guest audio, desktop or playback audio, music, and alerts.
A compact setup may combine sources in OBS. A compatible audio interface may instead use its own software mixer to combine inputs and computer playback into a virtual output selected as an OBS input. The exact routing depends on the interface and operating system; follow the documentation for your equipment rather than assuming one system’s route applies everywhere. Build the program mix in software
- Add and label each source once. Use clear names such as “Host mic,” “Guest,” and “Desktop audio” so you can identify the right channel quickly.
- Set levels at the source first. Check the microphone or playback application, then adjust the corresponding input and fader in OBS. Watch the colored meter and peak indicator; OBS describes the red zone as close to clipping.
- Monitor what OBS receives. Check the source at the device, then use OBS Audio Monitoring to listen to the signal in the streaming application. Monitoring options are described in the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Check channel layout. OBS says a mono source is heard in both left and right channels. Stereo assigns left and right separately, so a one-sided stereo assignment can leave viewers hearing audio in only one channel.
Optional interface workflow: PreSonus Revelator Dynamic
PreSonus documents one example using the Revelator Dynamic: adjust microphone and playback levels in Universal Control, route them to virtual Stream Mix A, then select Stream Mix A as OBS’s Mic/Aux input. In that example, the Main output is hardware-only for connected headphones or speakers, keeping local monitoring separate from the virtual stream output. Give a remote guest a mix-minus return
A mix-minus is a copy of the program mix with one or more channels removed. Roland’s support documentation describes it as “a copy of your audio mix with one or more channels removed.” For a guest return, include the host and other sources the guest should hear, but exclude that guest’s own channel. Otherwise, their voice can come back to them with a delay.
Choose a return route your setup supports
- Broadcast software with guest routing: vMix says its Call mixer automatically creates a guest mix-minus. Confirm the guest workflow and return behavior for the version and configuration you use. vMix mix-minus basics and troubleshooting
- Hardware with an AUX bus: Roland’s V-8HD instructions assign an output to AUX and set the guest channel’s send to minus infinity. The documented AUX audio-bus behavior depends on V-8HD firmware 2.00 or later. Roland V-8HD mix-minus instructions
- OBS or an audio interface: OBS provides per-source mixing and monitoring, but that alone does not guarantee a separate guest return. Whether you can build one depends on the routing capabilities of OBS, the interface, and the guest platform. Test the actual return with a guest or controlled test before airtime. Prevent feedback and check the finished mix
A correct mix-minus prevents the guest’s channel from being sent back on that return, but it cannot stop every echo. A microphone can pick up loud speakers, and an unintended webcam, camera, or room microphone can capture program audio. vMix lists loud speakers at either end and accidentally active audio sources among possible echo causes. Use headphones for the operator and ask guests to use them too. vMix troubleshooting

- Make a short test recording representative of the live setup.
- Listen back on headphones and ordinary speakers. Check that the host, guest, desktop audio, and music are present at usable levels.
- Confirm the guest cannot hear their own delayed voice, stereo material reaches both channels as intended, and the stream feed is not being captured and sent back through an open microphone.
- Adjust the source, route, or fader responsible for any problem, then record and listen again.
OBS recommends checking the signal at the device and in OBS monitoring, then recording a representative session and listening back before going live. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
