To find out whether membership perks cause more revenue, compare members randomly assigned to receive the perks with comparable members randomly assigned to a control group. Measure revenue over the same predefined period and analyze members according to their original assignment—not according to whether they chose to redeem a perk. Redemption is self-selected, so a redeemed-versus-not-redeemed comparison can confuse perk impact with the fact that more engaged members may already spend more.
“Always-on channel” can mean a live or streaming channel, a continuing communications surface, or another ongoing member experience. The measurement principles below apply across those settings, but the right assignment unit depends on how members encounter and share the perks. If members can affect one another, individual randomization may not be appropriate.
First define the decision and what “revenue” means
Before building a test, write down the business decision it will inform: launch a perk, expand eligibility, change an existing benefit, or remove one. Then define the eligible population, the channel or member experience being tested, and the period over which outcomes will be counted. Keep eligibility rules the same for treatment and control.
Choose a primary financial outcome that matches the decision. A practical default is net revenue or conversion value per randomized eligible member over a stated horizon. Specify which transactions count, how you will treat refunds and returns, and whether subscription payments, repeat purchases, or other revenue events belong in the measure. There is no universal event taxonomy for every membership platform.

- Record original assignment and, separately, whether each member was actually exposed to the offer.
- Log perk discovery and redemption as diagnostic events, not as proof that the perk generated revenue.
- Capture purchases or subscription payments and, where relevant, returns, refunds, and reward costs.
- Set the outcome window before looking at results and allow it to mature through the purchase or renewal cycle you care about.
Choose a design that creates a credible counterfactual
The key question is what would have happened to the assigned treatment group if it had not received the tested experience. Random assignment gives you a more credible answer than comparing people who opted into a perk with people who did not. The Spotify Confidence guidance describes randomized assignment as the basis for a reliable experiment; the right unit and implementation still depend on the channel.

When you can randomize access
Assign eligible members to perk access or the standard experience, then compare the groups by their original assignment. This tests the offer as a product experience, including the fact that some assigned members may never notice or redeem it. Keep the assignment stable through the test and do not move people between groups in response to engagement.
When access has to remain universal
Randomize a limited, non-intrusive encouragement, such as a discovery surface, if that variation is acceptable. The primary randomized result then answers whether the encouragement changed outcomes; it does not directly answer whether using the perk itself caused a change. Estimating an effect among compliers using an instrumental variable needs additional assumptions, including that the encouragement is relevant and does not affect outcomes through another route. Spotify Confidence notes that intrusive encouragement can undermine the latter assumption.

When the program is already continuous
Consider a persistent holdout if it is operationally and ethically acceptable, while running shorter randomized tests for individual perk changes. The short test estimates the marginal effect of its change in the context of what is already live. The holdout addresses the cumulative effect of the ongoing program and interactions among changes, not the isolated effect of every change made during the period.
Spotify Confidence illustrates cumulative measurement with an example of a 3% lower-engagement holdout after ten features shipped over six months. That is an illustration, not a benchmark for membership revenue. The same source cautions that small early cumulative effects can be difficult to detect, so a non-significant early result is not proof that a program has no effect.
When members can affect one another
Individual assignment can be contaminated if members share benefits, discuss different experiences, or otherwise influence one another. Depending on the actual platform, a household, community, market, or time block might be a more suitable assignment unit. The channel context must determine that choice; there is no established universal unit for an unnamed always-on channel.

Use intent-to-treat as the main business estimate
Analyze all eligible members according to their original randomized assignment, including those who did not see or redeem the perk. This intent-to-treat estimate answers the practical question: what was the effect of offering the experience to the assigned population under the test conditions? Noncompliance can dilute that estimate, but excluding non-users after assignment breaks the original comparison.
Keep exposure, discovery, redemption, and engagement as diagnostics that help explain how the experience worked. A separate analysis of the effect of actual perk usage is a different estimand. Because usage is voluntary, it needs stronger assumptions or a suitable design; it should not be presented as the randomized offer effect.

Measure incremental value and program economics
Report the absolute treatment-minus-control difference in the primary outcome and the relative lift, with uncertainty intervals. Google’s advertising guidance defines incremental conversion value as treatment conversion value minus control conversion value, and incremental ROAS as that value difference divided by ad spend. Those definitions are useful reference points, but ad spend is not automatically the right denominator for a membership-perk program.

For a perks decision, estimate whether added value remains after relevant program costs. Include reward cost, fulfillment and operating expense, discounts, and other variable costs that apply to the program. Consider cannibalization—for example, whether a discount or reward displaced a purchase that would have happened anyway—before calling a revenue increase profitable. An ROI-style ratio should use a clearly stated, relevant perk-program cost denominator rather than mechanically borrowing the advertising denominator.
Use retention or churn, repeat spend, average order value, and refunds as secondary outcomes or guardrails when they match the decision. They can help identify trade-offs, but do not substitute a favorable secondary metric for the predefined primary outcome after seeing the results. No universal cost benchmarks or revenue-lift benchmarks for membership perks are established by the sources cited here.

- Match duration to behavior. Allow enough time for the purchase, repeat-purchase, or renewal cycle that matters, then wait for the predefined outcome window to mature.
- Report uncertainty. Revenue can be volatile when order values vary. Give the estimated difference and its uncertainty, not just a point estimate or a binary “worked/did not work” label.
- Do not overread an early null. A small effect may require more sample or time to detect, especially for a cumulative program. A non-significant result is not proof of no effect.
- Separate the tested change from the whole program. A short experiment speaks to its intervention in the current context; a persistent holdout speaks to the continuing package of changes.
Google describes modeled delayed conversions for Demand Gen studies, but that is a feature of that advertising context, not a general guarantee for membership experiments. Define how late-arriving transactions will be handled in your own measurement rather than assuming every analytics platform will account for them automatically.

What published perks examples do—and do not—show
LatentView describes a gaming-subscription perks measurement project with a churn-reduction objective, a non-linear perks catalogue, and difficult non-experimental conditions. The available case document does not provide a numerical outcome and does not establish that perks increased revenue. It illustrates the complexity of measuring a perks program, not proof of a revenue lift.
Analytics products can support cohort analysis, subscription revenue or lifetime-value views, and experimentation. Amplitude describes those capabilities for media and entertainment, but its vendor material is not an independent comparison or performance evaluation. Specialist measurement services are another option when a team lacks internal capacity; the LatentView case is an example of that category, not evidence of a guaranteed result.
A practical measurement sequence
- Write the decision and estimand. State what will change if the result is positive, negative, or uncertain, and whether the question is the effect of offering a perk, encouraging discovery, or sustaining the full program.
- Define eligibility, assignment unit, and window. Specify who qualifies, whether assignment is at the member or group level, and the revenue horizon. If members can interfere with one another, resolve the appropriate unit before launch.
- Randomize and preserve assignment. Set up treatment and control before exposure. Keep assignment intact in the analysis even when take-up is incomplete.
- Predefine the primary financial outcome and guardrails. Document included revenue events, refund treatment, relevant cost categories, and secondary metrics before reviewing results.
- Instrument the experience. Capture assignment, exposure, discovery, redemption, transactions, and costs consistently for both groups.
- Wait for the outcome window, then compare. Report treatment and control values, the absolute difference, relative lift, and uncertainty. Explain any important noncompliance or missing data.
- Make the business decision on incremental economics. Weigh the measured change against relevant costs and possible cannibalization; distinguish a revenue increase from a profitable increase.
