Let the intended playback setup run for 24 hours and record the energy used in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This captures the tower’s actual AC draw; it does not include a separately powered monitor.
What you need to measure
Use a plug-in electricity usage meter, sometimes called a watt meter, between the wall outlet and the PC’s main power cable. Choose one rated for your local outlet and the equipment’s electrical load. For a useful 24-hour test, it should show cumulative energy in kWh or watt-hours (Wh); logging or a time history is helpful if you want to see changes during the day.
- A wall-side meter measures the AC power drawn by the equipment plugged through it, including power-supply conversion losses inside the PC.
- A tower-only reading excludes a separately powered monitor, speakers, or other peripherals.
- The PC’s PSU rating is not its actual consumption. CPU and GPU monitoring software shows selected component readings, not complete wall draw.
No reliable universal figure for a PC playing YouTube continuously is established here. The result depends on the particular hardware, playback settings, display, and power configuration, so measure the setup you intend to use.
Measure the PC over a full day
- Set the measurement boundary. Decide whether you want the tower alone or the entire desk setup. Connect only the equipment within that scope; avoid putting unrelated loads on the meter.
- Connect the meter. Plug the meter into the wall outlet, then plug the PC’s main AC cable into the meter. Check that the meter is displaying energy accumulation or is ready to record its starting value.
- Start representative playback. Play the YouTube video or playlist using the resolution, browser, and display and power settings you expect to use. Note interruptions, sleep settings, playback stops, or other events that make the run unlike intended 24/7 use.
- Run the test for 24 hours. Record the beginning and ending cumulative readings, or note the meter’s total energy at the end. A full-day energy total is more useful for daily-use estimates than a momentary watt reading because PC power changes with activity.
- Record the conditions. Note the PC model or components, video resolution, browser, display configuration, and relevant power settings. This makes later comparisons meaningful.
Read the result: watts versus energy
Watts (W) describe power at a moment or averaged over time. Watt-hours and kilowatt-hours describe energy accumulated over a period. If the meter gives the total kWh for a 24-hour run, that is the PC’s daily energy use for the measurement boundary you chose.

To convert measured energy into average power, use:
Average watts = (measured kWh × 1,000) ÷ elapsed hours

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
For example, apply the formula to the kWh recorded in your own 24-hour run, using 24 as the elapsed hours. If the meter reports Wh instead, divide the measured Wh by the elapsed hours to get average watts.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program gives this general guidance for fluctuating power: “If power consumption fluctuates, energy consumption should be measured over a period of time and then divided by the measurement period to determine average power.” Its page discusses standby and low-power measurement, not a YouTube-specific test protocol.

Include the monitor only if you measure it
If the goal is the complete desk setup, measure the monitor separately under the same display conditions and add its energy reading to the PC’s reading. Use the same method for separately powered speakers or other peripherals only if you want them included. Do not assume that a tower meter reading covers devices connected directly to a different outlet.
Why software readings and streaming estimates differ
Hardware utilities can help explain changes in consumption by showing readings such as CPU package or GPU power. They are supplementary telemetry, not an authoritative measurement of the computer’s mains draw, and they do not include a separately powered display.

Published streaming figures also may measure a different device or a wider system boundary. Fraunhofer FOKUS / Video-Dev describes using smart electricity meters between a device and wall socket and logging power every second in a television-streaming field test. Its reported averages were 117.4 W for tested televisions over 50 inches and 55.9 W for tested televisions 50 inches or smaller; these are television sample results, not PC benchmarks. The report also found an average Eco Mode reduction of around 37% across its tested display technologies, not a guaranteed saving for a PC.
The International Energy Agency’s 2020 analysis estimated 0.077 kWh per hour for an assumed Netflix viewing scenario in 2019. That estimate is not a measurement of YouTube playback on a PC: its scope and assumptions differ, and streaming estimates may include devices, networks, and data centers. A meter on your PC measures only the local equipment connected through it.

Likewise, Ericsson’s household summary reports an estimate of 1,230 kWh for all electronic devices in one measured household, not a typical household or a PC-only figure. These examples underline why a measured result for your own setup is more useful than borrowing a number from another device or scenario.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare runs fairly and estimate cost
Before comparing two runs or setups, keep the conditions alike:
- PC hardware and playback state
- Video resolution and browser or player settings
- Display configuration, brightness, and power mode
- Measurement boundary: tower only, or tower plus monitor and peripherals
- Duration and unit: average watts or cumulative kWh
To estimate electricity cost, multiply the measured kWh by your applicable electricity rate. The rate varies by location and tariff, so there is no single universal cost to apply. A tower-only kWh total should not be presented as the energy or cost of a complete desk setup unless other devices were measured and included.
