Prepare live chat before you go live
On a computer, open YouTube Studio and go to your channel’s moderation settings. Review the live-chat controls, including blocked words and whether potentially inappropriate messages are held for review. YouTube’s menu wording and navigation can change, so consult its channel moderation settings guidance if the labels differ.
Add words and decide what to hold
Add terms that are inappropriate or disruptive in the context of your event to the blocked-words list. Decide whether potentially inappropriate messages should be held for review. These tools can reduce the amount of unwanted chat reaching viewers, but they are filters, not guarantees. YouTube cautions that no system is perfect.
Choose who can participate
Pick the access mode that suits the stream. Unrestricted chat allows broad participation; subscribers-only chat can require people to have been subscribed for a minimum duration; members-only chat limits participation to channel members. Subscribers-only and members-only chat cannot be enabled at the same time. Availability and options can depend on the stream and interface, so check the event’s current setup.

You can combine subscribers-only chat with slow mode. Slow mode limits how often each person can post, which can make a fast-moving chat easier to follow without closing participation entirely.
Agree on a moderator plan
Before the event, decide who will watch chat and how the team will respond to disruption. For example, agree when a message should be removed, when to use a timeout, and when repeated or severe behavior warrants hiding the user. This is a practical team policy, not a YouTube rule.

Choose and add moderators
Assign moderation to people you trust, and choose a role based on the controls they need. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. Managing moderators have additional live-chat controls, but they do not have access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
Standard moderators
Standard moderators can remove messages, put users in timeout, hide users, and review messages held for review. This role is suitable when someone needs to handle the chat without the additional controls available to managing moderators.

Managing moderators
Managing moderators can use additional controls, including participant mode, message delay, blocked words, and management of standard moderators or approved users, as described in YouTube’s Android help. They still cannot access YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. See YouTube’s moderator guidance for role details and current setup instructions.
Manage messages and participants during the stream
Remove, time out, or hide
Open a message’s action menu to choose the response that fits the situation. Removing a message takes that message out of chat. A timeout temporarily prevents its author from sending messages for the selected period. Hiding a user makes that person’s chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers; YouTube does not tell the person they have been hidden.

Review held messages
When YouTube holds a potentially inappropriate message, a moderator can show it or hide it. Show it only if it is appropriate in context; otherwise, hide it. If nobody takes action, the message stays hidden. YouTube says its automated system is imperfect, so keep human judgment in the loop, especially when meaning depends on context. Read YouTube’s “Moderate live chat” guidance for the held-message controls.
Adjust chat controls when needed
Some moderation controls can also be changed during a stream. Managing moderators have additional options for controls such as participant mode and message delay. Check the current event and interface rather than assuming every option appears for every stream.

Know where Live Chat appears
YouTube Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. If viewers watch an embedded stream, they will not see the Live Chat feature there. YouTube also offers experimental AI-generated summaries of public chat conversation. These summaries are not summaries of the stream itself and may be inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate; do not treat them as a reliable moderation record. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
