In OBS, build a separate scene for each distinct part of your broadcast, put the required sources in each scene, and use Studio Mode to preview the next scene before taking it live. Keep your scene layouts in Scene Collections and your stream and output settings in Profiles. Before broadcasting, check YouTube eligibility, confirm the intended audio input is active, and test your connection and transitions.

What scenes and sources do in OBS

A scene is a composed state of your broadcast; sources are the visual and audio elements that make it up. OBS sources can include cameras, display or window capture, game capture, images, text, browser content, media, and audio. YouTube encoder streaming supports screen sharing, gameplay, and external audio or video devices, but external equipment is optional and depends on your production.

Think of scenes as the different looks or activities viewers will see, rather than making a new scene for every individual graphic or input. Plan a small set that lets you switch cleanly between the main parts of the show.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Starting Soon: A title image or text and optional background audio.
  • Host / Camera: Your webcam or capture-card input, with any labels or overlays.
  • Screen Share or Gameplay: The display, window, or game capture viewers need to see, with microphone or other relevant audio.
  • Break: A holding image, text, or media while you step away.
  • Ending: A closing graphic, credits, or final message.

These are examples, not required OBS presets. Name scenes so you can identify them quickly while presenting. OBS lets you name and reorder scenes; choose names that describe the program state rather than the source list.

Add and arrange sources in each scene

  1. Select or create the scene. In the Scenes panel, select an existing scene or create one, then give it a clear name.
  2. Add only the sources that scene needs. In the Sources panel, use the add control to choose the appropriate input or element. For a camera shot, add a webcam or capture card; for computer content, choose display, window, or game capture. Images and text work for titles and labels, browser sources for web overlays, and media sources for clips.
  3. Add audio inputs deliberately. Include the microphone or other sound source needed for that scene. Check the audio mixer while speaking or playing sound so you know the intended meter responds.
  4. Arrange the composition. Select sources to position and size them in the canvas. Use the Sources list to change their stacking order, and show or hide items as needed. A title or overlay may need to sit above a camera or captured screen.
  5. Check the scene at broadcast size. Look for cropped content, hidden text, overlapping elements, or a source that is visible when it should be hidden. Repeat for each scene, especially those with a different capture source or audio arrangement.

Source choices can vary by operating system. OBS’s sources guide distinguishes, for example, Windows Game Capture from macOS screen-capture options, so use the option available for your system rather than assuming every source behaves identically on every platform.

Preview and switch scenes with Studio Mode

Studio Mode separates the scene currently on air from the scene you are preparing. This lets you edit or select the next scene and inspect it before viewers see it.

  1. Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
  2. Select the next scene in the preview pane. Make any layout changes there, not by altering the live program.
  3. Inspect the preview for framing, overlays, and visible content. Confirm that the right audio sources are active for the next state.
  4. Use Transition to take the preview live. OBS includes Cut for an immediate change and Fade for a gradual one; you can adjust transition duration.

Use a quick transition or hotkey only when you can confidently identify what it will put on air. Studio Mode reduces accidental live edits, but it does not replace checking the preview before a transition.

Keep Profiles and Scene Collections separate

OBS uses two different configuration types for two different purposes:

Configuration What it organizes Use it for
Scene Collection A group of scenes and their scene setups Keeping layouts for a recurring show or another production together
Profile Most stream and output settings, including service/account connection, video, and output configuration Saving settings that differ by streaming service or resolution

A Profile does not store scenes. If you are preserving or moving a setup, save or export the relevant Scene Collection and Profile rather than assuming one contains both. For example, a recurring program’s scene arrangement belongs with its Scene Collection, while its output configuration belongs with its Profile.

Check YouTube eligibility and test before going live

YouTube’s current Help guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its getting-started guidance states that live streamers must be at least 16 years old. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave first-time activation until just before an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance and YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions for the current requirements.

  1. Set up the stream in advance and check the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
  2. In OBS, move through the planned scenes in Studio Mode. Confirm each preview is composed correctly and each transition produces the intended result.
  3. Speak into the intended microphone or play the relevant audio and confirm its meter moves. Check that unwanted sources are not active.
  4. Run a short test before a public event. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. This is bandwidth-planning guidance, not a guaranteed connection test.

You do not need expensive equipment to get started, according to YouTube’s live-streaming tips. Choose inputs based on the production you want to make; no particular camera, microphone, or capture-card model is required to manage OBS scenes.

Troubleshoot common scene problems

  • The wrong content appears after a switch: Select the intended scene in Studio Mode’s preview and inspect it before using Transition. Use descriptive scene names so you can distinguish similar layouts.
  • A source is missing or covered: Check that it is present and visible in the Sources list, then review its position and stacking order. A source placed behind an opaque image may be functioning but hidden.
  • The scene looks different from what you expected: Check the selected capture source and operating-system-specific source options. Reposition or resize the source in the canvas and verify the result in preview.
  • The microphone or other sound is absent: Watch the audio mixer while producing sound. If the intended meter does not move, check that the expected audio input is included and active in the scene.
  • The first YouTube broadcast cannot start: Verify channel eligibility and enable live streaming ahead of time; first activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • The stream is unstable despite a correct scene layout: Check available upload capacity against the total streaming bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom. Scene management does not resolve an inadequate network connection.
