To shrink a prerecorded video before a YouTube 24/7 stream, make a re-encoded copy with a more efficient codec such as HEVC, then lower its bitrate gradually and check the picture before replacing the original. If you mean reducing live upload bandwidth instead, set the encoder to YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations; those are not recipes for compressing a saved video. If you mean smaller local recordings, record at a lower bitrate or transcode them afterward.
First, identify what needs to be smaller
File size, live upload bandwidth and local recording size are related to bitrate, but they are different jobs. A prerecorded file’s size depends largely on its encoded bitrate and duration. A live stream’s upload rate is the bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube. A local recording has its own recording settings and can be compressed after capture.
- Smaller source files: Re-encode a copy, usually by changing codec, bitrate, resolution or frame rate.
- Less live upload bandwidth: Choose a live resolution and frame rate, then configure the encoder to the corresponding live settings.
- Smaller local recordings: Reduce the recording bitrate or transcode the finished recording; keep and verify the local copy if it matters.
For a continuous broadcast, avoid treating YouTube’s live recommendations as an archival-file target. A lower-rate encode may save storage, but the result still needs to look acceptable for the footage you actually loop.
Estimate file size from bitrate and duration
A useful decimal estimate is 0.45 GB per hour for each sustained 1 Mbps. The calculation is bitrate × duration ÷ 8, then converted to bytes; actual file sizes are a little higher because of container overhead. For example, 4 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio totals 4.128 Mbps, or about 1.86 GB per hour.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This estimate helps you work backward from a storage limit. If a video is too large, reducing its average bitrate reduces its size roughly in proportion, provided duration and the other settings stay the same. But the visual cost is content-dependent: detailed documentary footage, fast movement, grain and fades can reveal compression more readily than a largely static image.
Make a smaller prerecorded source file
- Keep the original. Duplicate the source before encoding so you can compare versions or return to the uncompressed original.
- Check codec compatibility. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, but your file player, encoder and selected ingest path must support the codec you choose. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more data compression than H.264 at the same video quality; that is a broad codec comparison, not a promised saving for your particular file.
- Encode a representative section first. Include the most demanding material: motion, fine detail, dark scenes, text, or busy backgrounds. Compare the new encode with the original at the intended viewing size, paying particular attention to blockiness, smeared movement, banding and audio sync.
- Lower bitrate in measured steps. If the test still looks good, reduce bitrate further and review again. Do not assume a particular number will suit every documentary or loop; footage and encoder settings determine the result.
- Change resolution or frame rate only when appropriate. Lower resolution reduces detail, while a lower frame rate can make motion less smooth. Those changes can save data, but are not automatically worthwhile for footage whose detail or movement is important.
- Use the accepted output in the stream workflow. Confirm that your streaming software or service can play the encoded file and that audio remains in sync before using it for a continuous run.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers, but that does not restore detail removed from your source or from the stream you send. The ingested picture quality still sets a limit on what can be produced for viewers.

Reduce live upload bandwidth with YouTube’s live settings
For a live encoder, choose the intended resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for the codec. The figures below are YouTube Help’s current recommendations, not universal minimums or file-compression targets. The page does not show a publication year. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio, with stereo audio at 128 kbps.
| Live resolution and frame rate | AV1 or HEVC recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
These settings apply to the live encoder workflow. YouTube’s separate upload-encoding recommendations concern uploaded videos, not an always-on live encoder; do not substitute that upload table for live-ingest settings.

- In your encoder, select the YouTube-supported protocol and codec your workflow supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 are listed video options.
- Set the stream’s resolution and frame rate, then select the matching recommended bitrate from the table.
- Set rate control to CBR, keyframe interval to 2 seconds (never over 4 seconds), and audio to a supported format. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 kbps.
- Run a realistic test using representative audio and motion. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the upload connection has headroom before leaving the stream unattended.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth. If sending primary and backup streams, the connection must accommodate both stream rates. A speed test and a short preflight under realistic conditions are more useful than relying on a headline connection speed alone.
Keep local recordings smaller and preserve the archive
If you also record locally, set a lower sustained recording bitrate or transcode the recording after capture. Decide how much footage to retain and check that files are complete and growing as expected; YouTube’s guidance recommends validating local archive integrity but does not prescribe a particular file-rotation schedule.

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream that runs indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, preserve a local copy or plan shorter sessions that fit the archive guidance.

- The file is still too large: Check its duration and average bitrate first. Try a more efficient compatible codec, then lower bitrate in small steps and compare a demanding segment.
- The smaller encode looks poor: Restore some bitrate, or keep the original resolution and frame rate. Inspect fast motion, fine details and dark scenes before deciding the compromise is acceptable.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Check that the actual upload connection has the recommended headroom, verify the configured live bitrate and test under realistic network conditions. Lowering the stream’s live bitrate may help, but use a setting appropriate to the desired resolution, frame rate and codec.
- The encoder rejects the codec or file: Confirm support in both the encoder and the selected YouTube ingest workflow; use a supported codec and protocol instead.
- A long stream has no complete YouTube archive: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a verified local recording or schedule shorter sessions when an automatic archive is needed.

Copyright and channel suitability still matter
Compression changes the encoded file; it does not change the rights to its music, footage or other material. Make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to use everything in a continuous stream, and consider YouTube’s rules for reused content when deciding what to broadcast. Technical settings cannot guarantee that a stream or channel will comply with copyright or monetization policies.
