How to Make Pre-Recorded YouTube Stream Videos Smaller Without Changing Resolution

Reduce a pre-recorded YouTube video’s file size without changing its resolution by adjusting bitrate or codec while preserving dimensions and frame rate.

To make a pre-recorded video smaller without changing its resolution, export it at the same width and height but use a lower video bitrate or a more efficient codec your editing and upload workflow supports. Keep the original frame rate, then preview a demanding section: lower bitrate can reduce file size, but it can also make motion, fine detail, text, or dark footage look worse.

What to change—and what to keep

Resolution means the video’s pixel dimensions. To preserve it, use the source width and height for the export; for example, standard 16:9 1080p is 1920×1080. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises choosing the original size. YouTube upload troubleshooting and YouTube resolution and aspect ratios explain the platform’s guidance.

  • Keep: source width and height, and the frame rate at which the video was recorded.
  • Adjust: video bitrate, or the codec if you can verify it works throughout your editing and upload workflow.
  • Check: the exported file’s dimensions, frame rate, size, and visual quality before replacing or deleting the original.

YouTube says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate it was recorded. Its upload recommendations list MP4 with H.264 video and variable bitrate (VBR). These are recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular file size or a universal minimum bitrate. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.

Reduce the file size without changing dimensions

  1. Note the source properties. Record the width, height, frame rate, duration, and current file size from your editor or media information tool. Use the same width and height for the export.
  2. Select a compatible export format. For a straightforward YouTube upload, choose MP4 with H.264 video, following YouTube’s published upload recommendations. If you consider another codec, confirm that your editor, playback setup, and upload workflow support it.
  3. Choose variable bitrate if available. Lower the video bitrate from the current setting to reduce the amount of data used to encode the video. There is no single correct reduction: the result depends on the footage and encoder. Avoid treating a bitrate figure as a guaranteed file-size target.
  4. Preserve the recorded frame rate. Do not change it just to reduce file size; YouTube advises matching the recorded frame rate.
  5. Export a representative section first. Include challenging footage such as fast movement, fine detail, scrolling text, and dark or noisy scenes. Compare it with the source at normal viewing size.
  6. Adjust and export the full video. If you see blockiness, smearing, or lost detail, raise the bitrate or try a more efficient codec that you have verified is compatible. Check the finished file’s dimensions and frame rate before uploading.

Use YouTube’s bitrate figures as reference points

YouTube publishes recommended SDR upload video bitrates by resolution and frame-rate group. These are reference recommendations, not minimums or guaranteed file-size settings. The figures below are from YouTube Help; the page’s publication year is not stated. Codec, scene complexity, duration, and audio all affect the final file size and quality.

Resolution Frame-rate group YouTube recommended SDR video bitrate
1080p 24, 25, or 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p 48, 50, or 60 fps 12 Mbps
720p 24, 25, or 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p 48, 50, or 60 fps 7.5 Mbps
2160p (4K) 24, 25, or 30 fps 35–45 Mbps
2160p (4K) 48, 50, or 60 fps 53–68 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s upload encoding settings. They are not an encoder-independent promise of quality or file size. YouTube also notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. A newer codec may encode more efficiently, but the reviewed YouTube upload page lists H.264; check compatibility before relying on a different codec.

Estimate the size and judge the trade-off

At a fixed duration, lower video bitrate generally means a smaller video stream; audio also contributes to the total file size. As a rough planning estimate, bitrate in megabits per second multiplied by duration in seconds, then divided by eight, gives video data in megabytes before container overhead. The calculation is approximate, and the exported file may differ because of variable bitrate behavior and audio.

Compare exports on the factors that matter for your use: file size, visible quality during motion and in fine detail, encoding time, compatibility, and whether the dimensions and frame rate stayed unchanged. A smaller file is useful only if the picture remains acceptable for the documentary footage and viewing conditions.

Common problems and fixes

  • The exported image looks blocky or smeared: the bitrate may be too low for the scene, or the encoder may be struggling with motion or noise. Raise the bitrate and inspect another short representative section.
  • The file is still large: confirm the export actually changed the video bitrate and that duration and audio settings are understood. Changing resolution is not necessary for this method.
  • The export has different dimensions: match the source width and height in the export settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to use the original size.
  • Motion looks uneven or different from the source: verify the export frame rate matches the recorded frame rate.
  • A different codec will not play or upload as expected: return to a workflow compatible with the target software and YouTube’s listed MP4/H.264 recommendation, or verify the alternate codec end to end before encoding the full recording.
