Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical 1080p30 documentary or other prerecorded video, start with HandBrake’s Fast 1080p30 preset, keep the source frame rate where possible, and inspect the result before encoding a whole playlist. The preset is a compatible starting point, not a universal quality guarantee. Most importantly, HandBrake’s file-encoding quality or bitrate is separate from the bitrate and keyframe settings of the live feed sent to YouTube.
Recommended HandBrake starting settings
Open the video in HandBrake and choose a preset that matches the source and intended playback. For an ordinary 1080p30 source, Fast 1080p30 is a practical first choice: HandBrake’s preset documentation describes it as fast and compatible with a wide range of software and devices, with MP4, H.264 video, and AAC stereo audio. These are starting settings; inspect a representative encode because results depend on the footage and playback setup.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Preset | Fast 1080p30 for a typical 1080p30 source | Provides a broadly compatible H.264/MP4 output without requiring a custom setup. |
| Dimensions | Keep 1920 Ă— 1080 when that is the appropriate source size; verify the output summary. | A preset may downscale sources larger than its maximum dimensions. |
| Frame rate | Same as Source where preserving source timing is appropriate. If fixed frame rate is required, test CFR at the source’s actual rate. | A 24, 25, or 30 fps source does not become better merely by converting it to 60 fps. |
| Video encoder | H.264 for the straightforward compatibility route. | It is used by HandBrake’s common 1080p presets and is supported in YouTube’s live-encoder guidance. |
| Encoder speed preset | Start with the default or a neutral choice such as medium. | Slower settings trade encoding time for potential compression efficiency; changing this setting can require retuning quality or bitrate. |
| Quality or file bitrate | Use constant quality when visual consistency matters and file size can vary; use average bitrate when targeting storage or file size. | No single RF value is established for every kind of 1080p footage used in a long playlist. |
| Audio | AAC stereo for ordinary stereo material. | This is the common preset’s audio format; live audio guidance is a separate matter. |
| Tune and advanced options | Leave at default/none unless the footage has a specific characteristic, such as animation or film grain, and you understand the tradeoff. | Tunes and advanced options can affect compatibility. |
To choose a quality setting, encode a short, representative section that includes the detail, motion, and noise typical of the source. Compare the result with the original and check the resulting file size before committing to a full library encode. That is a practical evaluation method, not a claim that one particular RF value has been tested as best.
HandBrake’s current frame-rate documentation labels itself a draft. It describes Same as Source as supporting variable frame rate (VFR). Peak Frame Rate (PFR) is a ceiling: it leaves portions at or below the chosen rate unchanged and limits higher-rate portions; it does not make every portion run at exactly that frame rate. If a playback or streaming setup needs fixed-rate video, test constant frame rate (CFR) at the source’s actual rate.

Fast 1080p30 or Creator 1080p60?
Pick according to the footage’s frame rate and intended output, not simply because one number is higher. HandBrake’s Creator 1080p60 preset is a relevant web-oriented alternative when preparing 60 fps output. A 30 fps source generally has no motion detail to gain from conversion to 60 fps.
| Choice | Best fit | Frame-rate consideration | Size and encoding tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast 1080p30 | Typical 1080p30 video and a broadly compatible starting encode. | Designed for 30 fps output; preserve a different source rate when appropriate rather than converting by default. | Fast is the speed-oriented starting point. Actual file size depends on content and quality or bitrate choices. |
| Creator 1080p60 | Web output when the source and intended playback are 60 fps. | Useful when retaining 60 fps matters; do not use it as a reason to turn lower-frame-rate footage into 60 fps. | A higher-frame-rate encode can involve more frames to encode and store; actual size depends on settings and footage. |
HandBrake’s official performance figures are tied to a historical test machine, so they should not be treated as a prediction of how quickly either preset will encode on your computer.

What bitrate should I use for 1080p?
First decide whether you mean the prerecorded file or the live feed. HandBrake prepares a file; a live encoder sends a separate stream to YouTube. Do not set HandBrake’s average file bitrate by copying YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendation.
| Workflow and format | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p SDR H.264 upload at 24, 25, or 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Upload encoding guidance; match the recorded frame rate and use progressive scan. |
| 1080p SDR H.264 upload at 48, 50, or 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Upload encoding guidance for high frame rates. |
| 1080p30 H.264 live feed | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | Live ingestion guidance, not a HandBrake file-encode target. |
| 1080p60 H.264 live feed | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum | Live ingestion guidance; confirm the encoder can sustain the target. |
| 1080p30 AV1 or H.265 live feed | 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum | Use only when the live encoder and workflow support the chosen codec. |
| 1080p60 AV1 or H.265 live feed | 12 Mbps recommended | Live ingestion guidance; check codec support and available compute capacity. |
These are YouTube’s current published recommendations and minimums in guidance accessed on 2026-10-03; platform requirements can change. The upload and live numbers differ because they describe different workflows.

Set the live encoder separately
After preparing the prerecorded file, configure the encoder that sends the live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance recommends these settings:
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio.
- SDR color: Rec. 709. Advanced guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, and CABAC.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options in its live guidance. H.264 is the simple compatibility choice reflected in common HandBrake presets. Before choosing H.265 or AV1 for the live feed, confirm that your actual streaming encoder and ingestion workflow support that codec.

Check the complete 24/7 pipeline
A good HandBrake encode does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Test the live setup with audio and movement similar to the intended playlist. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, verify that the outbound connection can sustain the live bitrate, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing before going live. These checks are especially important for a continuous stream; a file preset alone cannot provide continuous-service reliability.
- Confirm the encoded file has the intended dimensions, frame rate, audio, and playback behavior.
- Test a representative segment through the actual live encoder and YouTube workflow.
- Check network headroom at the chosen live bitrate and watch stream health during operation.
- Review the rights and permissions for every video and audio track in the playlist. Encoding a video does not grant permission to stream it; YouTube’s copyright rules still apply.
- Do not assume that looping or republishing prerecorded material automatically meets YouTube’s policies. Review current YouTube rules for copyright and reused content before operating a continuous channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
