To accept automatic donations with PayPal, set up a Donate button or PayPal donation page that lets donors choose a recurring gift—typically an automatic monthly donation. Donors authorize the repeat payments themselves; you do not silently turn one-time gifts into subscriptions. PayPal provides hosted pages and shareable links as well as website buttons, so you can choose a route that fits how people find your organization.
Choose a PayPal donation route
PayPal offers several ways to collect donations. Choose based on whether you have a website, how much control you want over the presentation, and whether donors should start from a campaign or a button. PayPal does not identify one option as best for every organization.

Set up recurring donations with a Donate button
For a website, PayPal’s Help guidance is to set up a Donate button and integrate it into your site. The button supports a donor’s choice to make an automatic monthly donation. The exact setup screens and account requirements can vary by market.

- Check your PayPal account and local requirements. Confirm that your account can create the donation tool you want and whether your organization qualifies for any charity features or rates.
- Set up the Donate button in PayPal. Follow the donation-button setup available for your account and market. Configure the donation choices your organization will offer, including the recurring monthly option if available.
- Integrate the button into your website. Add it where visitors can understand what the donation supports and choose whether to give once or monthly.
- Review the donor flow. Confirm that the page or button makes the recurring choice clear, and that donors can select the amount and frequency offered.
- Publish and share the page. Send supporters to the page containing the button, or use a hosted page or shareable link if that better fits your setup.
PayPal’s Help article summarizes the recurring route this way: “To receive recurring donations, simply set up a Donate button and integrate it into your site.” Read the current guidance at PayPal Help.
Make clear who controls a recurring gift
A recurring donation is authorized by the donor, not imposed on people who made a one-time donation. PayPal says both the organization and donor can manage automatic payments in their respective profile settings, including changing the amount or cancelling. Explain the recurring option plainly near the button so a supporter knows what they are choosing.

Check account eligibility and fees
Account capabilities and charity eligibility differ by country. PayPal’s US donation page says a personal account can create a donation page, while a business account has more update and customization features. PayPal’s UK guidance describes website Donate-button setup as expecting a business account. Do not assume a personal account can create every type of integration; check the instructions shown for your account and country.
PayPal says its donation page has no setup or cancellation fees, but transaction rates apply. Eligible charities may qualify for lower rates, subject to PayPal confirmation and local requirements. Rates and qualification are market-specific and can change, so check PayPal’s current terms for your region rather than budgeting from a general or discounted rate.
