OBS can loop a local music file and start streaming when it launches, but a startup shortcut alone does not make a stream self-recovering. On Windows, you can add OBS’s --startstreaming launch flag and run it at sign-in or reboot; then test separately for network loss, blocked YouTube prompts, and playback failures. OBS needs a computer that remains powered on and connected.
What OBS can—and cannot—restart automatically
OBS Media Source can loop a local audio or video file, and OBS can be launched with a request to start streaming. A Windows community example uses the --startstreaming argument with a startup shortcut or Task Scheduler. This can cover a computer restart, but it does not by itself detect every dead OBS process, stalled source, or failed YouTube broadcast. A stream can also wait at a YouTube broadcast-selection or management prompt.
OBS’s “Restart playback when source becomes active” setting concerns playback when that source becomes active or visible. It does not restart the OBS application or the YouTube stream. The documented Windows launch example is community guidance, not a verified cross-platform procedure or a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. OBS forum: autostart after reboot; OBS forum: automatic start and broadcast-selection prompt.
Set up the music scene in OBS
- Add the source. In your scene, select Sources > + > Media Source. Name it and choose the licensed local music file. OBS documents support for audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. OBS Media Sources.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop so the file starts again after it ends. Do not confuse this with “Restart playback when source becomes active”: that option affects source activation, not application recovery.
- Check audio. Play the source and watch the OBS audio meter. Confirm the intended source is audible and that no unwanted desktop audio or duplicate source is being captured. Let the file reach its end and verify it starts again; a short check at the beginning cannot confirm the loop works.
- Keep the scene usable for a live player. If the broadcast is meant to show a still image or visualizer while the music plays, add and test that visual in the same scene. Confirm the audio and picture are both present in the preview before streaming.
Configure YouTube and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the intended live broadcast and use the encoder workflow’s stream URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s stream key functions like a password: do not share screenshots, logs, or configuration files that reveal it.
- Decide deliberately whether YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options should be enabled for this broadcast. Reusing stream settings also copies the key and those selections, so confirm them when creating or reusing a broadcast. YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
- Before relying on automation, confirm that OBS connects to the correct broadcast and that no selection or management dialog is waiting for input. An OBS launch flag does not guarantee that a broadcast choice will be made for you.
Start OBS streaming when Windows starts
The documented example is for Windows. Exact executable paths and quoting can differ by installation, so check the path on your own computer rather than copying an assumed one.

- Locate the OBS shortcut you intend to launch. Open its Properties and inspect the Target field.
- Add a space after the closing quote for the OBS executable path, followed by
--startstreaming. Keep the executable path itself correctly quoted. The target should point to the installed OBS executable and pass the flag as a separate argument. - Test the edited shortcut manually. OBS should open and attempt to start streaming. If the target is invalid or a dialog appears, correct that before configuring startup.
- Put the tested shortcut in the Windows Startup folder or configure Task Scheduler to launch it at the appropriate sign-in or startup event. Startup timing matters: if OBS launches before the network is ready, the first connection may fail.
- If you add a delay or a connectivity check, treat it as a setup-specific implementation choice and verify it on the actual computer. The cited sources do not establish a validated Task Scheduler recipe or watchdog configuration.
For the launch-flag and startup-shortcut example, see the OBS forum discussion. It is not an official all-versions or all-operating-systems recipe.
Choose encoder settings and test stream health
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a baseline, then test with the actual music, visuals, resolution, and internet connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are encoder recommendations, not a promise that the stream will never disconnect. YouTube encoder settings.

- Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain continuously, including during normal household or venue internet use; test the real setup rather than relying on a speed-test peak.
- Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval and keep it at or below four seconds.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s connection indicators during a representative test. Correct warnings or unstable delivery before leaving the stream unattended.
- Test a network interruption separately from a computer reboot. OBS reconnect behavior can help with a dropped connection, but it is not a substitute for recovering a crashed application, an inactive media source, or a broadcast that needs selection.
Test recovery before leaving the stream unattended
Run the tests separately so you know which part of the setup failed. Use an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test broadcast if you do not want the checks to appear publicly.
- Reboot test: restart Windows and confirm OBS launches, the intended scene and music source are present, and the correct YouTube broadcast begins receiving the stream.
- Viewer test: open the YouTube watch page from a separate device or browser session. Confirm it actually plays the expected audio and image; seeing OBS report that it is streaming is not the same as checking the viewer experience.
- Network test: simulate a brief connection interruption only when safe to do so. Confirm what OBS does when the connection returns, whether YouTube resumes the intended broadcast, and whether a prompt needs operator input.
- Loop test: let the media file reach its end and verify playback restarts without silence or a scene change.
- Prompt test: check for dialogs, broadcast-selection requests, login requirements, or updates that could block unattended startup.
Repeat the checks after changes to OBS, Windows, the scene, the stream key, or YouTube’s broadcast configuration. A successful test is evidence for that setup and test, not a guarantee of 24/7 continuity.

Plan separately for archives and music rights
A live stream is not a complete archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a durable recording of a continuous music channel, do not rely on the live player as the archive: plan a local recording and verify that the recording file is being written and remains usable. YouTube: Archive live streams.
Confirm music permission before broadcasting
Use music you created or have permission to use, with terms that cover YouTube livestreaming, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archive or replay. YouTube’s live-stream settings can manage rights-related handling, including Content ID and rights policy, but those controls do not grant you permission to use a track. Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens after reboot but does not stream | The launch flag is missing or malformed, the network is not ready, or a YouTube prompt is waiting. | Test the shortcut manually, confirm the target path and argument, then inspect OBS and YouTube for a connection error or blocked dialog. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but the viewer page is not live | The wrong broadcast may be selected, or YouTube may still require a broadcast action. | Check the selected broadcast and its status in YouTube Studio, then verify the watch page from a separate session. |
| The stream disconnects and stays down | The network may not have recovered, or reconnect alone may not address the failure. | Check the connection and YouTube stream health, then determine whether OBS is still running and whether the broadcast needs action. |
| The music stops at the end of the file | Loop is off, or the wrong source or file is being used. | Reopen Media Source properties, enable Loop, and observe a full playback cycle. |
| The stream plays but has no expected sound | The wrong source may be active, audio may not be routed as intended, or a file may not decode correctly. | Check the OBS audio meter and source selection, and test the file’s supported format and playback locally. |
| The live stream is available but no full recording appears | The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold, or archiving otherwise did not yield the recording you need. | Use a separate local recording plan and verify the resulting file rather than assuming the live archive is complete. |
Cost and hardware considerations
With the DIY method, OBS runs on a computer that must stay powered and connected for the stream to continue. No minimum computer model is established here: requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, visual workload, and other software running at the same time. A UPS may help with brief power loss, but it cannot fix a network outage, software crash, or stalled source.
