Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo start a 4K/60 YouTube broadcast when you sign in to Windows, configure OBS for 3840×2160 at 60 fps, set an encoder and bitrate your PC and upload connection can sustain, then add an OBS shortcut to Windows startup with the --startstreaming launch parameter. In YouTube Studio, enable the stream’s auto-start setting if you want the encoder to trigger the broadcast. Starting OBS and starting the broadcast are separate behaviors, so test both before leaving the setup unattended.
Before you configure automatic streaming
Confirm YouTube Live is ready
If this is your first time streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream you intend to use, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and destination information; keep it private and reset it in Studio if it is exposed. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream and its stream-key and encoder setup guidance.
Check content rights and broadcast intent
Only stream material you have permission to use, including music, documentary footage, and other third-party material. A successful connection does not establish that the content is eligible to stay live or be monetized; review YouTube’s copyright and monetization requirements for your channel and content. Also decide whether sign-in should merely open OBS or actually begin a public broadcast. The steps below configure the latter, so supervise the first run.
Set OBS for YouTube Live at 4K/60
Set resolution and frame rate
- Open OBS Studio and go to Settings > Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840Ă—2160. Set Common FPS Values to 60.
- Check that your scene, sources, and canvas are composed for the intended 16:9 4K output. A 4K output setting does not increase the detail of lower-resolution source material.
OBS distinguishes the output resolution from the base canvas and cautions that 60-fps streaming can tax the system. For a starting point, run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then verify the output settings and test a representative scene.

Choose an encoder and a YouTube bitrate target
In Settings > Output, use Output Mode: Advanced if needed to expose streaming encoder controls. Select an encoder actually available on your PC, and use YouTube’s codec-specific 2160p60 ingest guidance:
| Codec | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s ingest settings, not a promise that your internet connection or hardware can sustain them. Choose a bitrate the PC can encode and the upload connection can carry consistently, with headroom for normal network variation. YouTube’s figures and further encoder guidance are on its live encoder settings page.

Match the important encoder settings
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS is recommended. Use the RTMPS server address provided for your stream if supported by the selected OBS configuration.
- Video: progressive scan, square pixels, and up to 60 fps. For SDR, YouTube’s general guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit; use settings appropriate to your chosen codec and mode.
- B-frames: YouTube’s general advanced settings list 2.
- Audio: AAC. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.
Encoder controls and labels vary by OBS version and hardware. Apply the closest matching options available for your encoder rather than assuming every codec exposes identical controls. See YouTube’s protocol and encoder recommendations.
Pick a hardware encoder your PC supports
On compatible Windows hardware, OBS may offer NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component; support depends on the installed GPU, driver, and OBS version. Older encoder generations can deliver lower image quality at a given bitrate, so test the result rather than choosing by name alone. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as baseline requirements, but that baseline does not guarantee 4K/60 performance. Scene complexity, encoder, resolution, and frame rate all affect load. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide and system requirements.

4K latency and stream health
YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization option for 4K; 4K streams use normal latency. After connecting OBS, check the stream health indicators and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before the live event and monitoring stream health during it.
Add OBS to Windows startup
Use the Startup folder for sign-in launch
- Press Windows key + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the current user’s Startup folder. To launch for all users, useshell:common startupinstead; this may require administrator access. - Create a shortcut to OBS in that folder. The executable is commonly named
obs64.exe; its location depends on where OBS was installed. You can find it by locating OBS in the Start menu, opening its file location, and using the shortcut’s file location if necessary. - Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and edit the Target field. After the quoted path to
obs64.exe, add a space and--startstreaming. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Keep the quotation marks around the executable path. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe, for exampleC:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit. Use the actual installation path on your PC. OBS specifically calls for this working directory when launching through scheduled or other automated means. - Click Apply, then OK. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, to test the shortcut.
Microsoft documents the Startup folder method for Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps to see whether OBS is listed and enabled. If you only want OBS to open, omit --startstreaming. OBS documents this parameter and the working-directory requirement in its launch parameters guide; Microsoft explains Startup folder shortcuts in its Windows startup-app instructions.

Make YouTube start the broadcast when OBS connects
The OBS parameter asks OBS to start streaming when it launches. YouTube’s stream auto-start setting controls whether the encoder connection initiates the broadcast. In Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and enable auto-start if that is the behavior you want. Verify the exact stream is selected and the correct key is configured in OBS. If you want to approve the broadcast manually, leave auto-start off and do not use a launch setup that automatically starts streaming.
Use Task Scheduler if startup needs conditions or a delay
For a logon-triggered launch with additional conditions, use Task Scheduler instead of the Startup folder. Create a task with a log on trigger and an action that starts the OBS executable; put --startstreaming in the action’s arguments if you want the broadcast to start, and set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Configure it for the signed-in user’s interactive session so the visible OBS interface is available. Microsoft’s logon trigger example describes the trigger/action approach. Do not assume a GUI application launched in a non-interactive session will behave like one opened on your desktop.

Test the full startup-to-broadcast chain
- In OBS, confirm the intended profile, scene collection, scene, stream service, and YouTube stream key are selected.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Confirm the preview is composed correctly and the encoder is not overloaded.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming 2160p60 feed, audio, stable bitrate, and healthy stream status. Resolve warnings before relying on automatic startup.
- Sign out and back in (or restart). Confirm the expected OBS profile and scene load, then confirm whether the broadcast starts only when intended.
- Supervise the first unattended-style run. A successful desktop launch alone does not prove that the upload connection, stream key, encoding, or YouTube ingest will remain healthy.
Troubleshoot common startup and 4K/60 problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open at sign-in | Shortcut is missing, disabled, points to the wrong executable, or is in the wrong Startup folder. | Check Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps; verify the shortcut path and whether it is in the user or all-users Startup folder. |
| OBS opens but does not stream | --startstreaming is absent or malformed, or OBS cannot connect. |
Inspect the shortcut’s Target, preserving the quotes around the executable path and adding the parameter after them. Open OBS manually and check the service, stream key, and connection. |
| OBS says it is streaming but YouTube has not started the event | YouTube auto-start is off, or the selected stream/key does not match. | Check the stream’s auto-start setting in Live Control Room and confirm OBS uses that stream’s key. If you want manual approval, this may be the intended behavior. |
| Stream key or connection error | Wrong key, wrong destination, or key exposure. | Copy the URL and key from the intended Live Control Room stream. Reset a compromised key, update OBS, and keep the new key private. |
| Frames drop, encoding overloads, or output is not smooth | The PC, encoder, scene, or upload connection cannot sustain the selected 4K/60 settings. | Check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Reduce scene load or select a supported hardware encoder; lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if stability still fails. Retest under representative conditions. |
| YouTube does not report 2160p60 | OBS output settings, source composition, ingest negotiation, or connection quality may differ from the intended setup. | Confirm Settings > Video shows 3840×2160 and 60 fps, and inspect YouTube’s received stream status rather than relying only on the local preview. |
| Scheduled launch behaves differently from a desktop launch | The task may use a different account, working directory, or non-interactive session. | Set the task to the correct user’s logon session, set Start in to the OBS executable’s directory, and test while signed in. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than a broadcast tied to your Windows session, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it supports whatever quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
