How to Make Free Music With Suno AI—and What You Can Actually Do With It

Suno’s Basic plan lets you generate music at no subscription cost, but free-plan songs are generally for personal, non-commercial use. Here is the complete workflow, with prompts, credit guidance, download details, and copyright cautions.

Yes—you can make music with Suno AI without paying for a subscription. Suno’s Basic plan currently provides up to 50 credits that renew daily, which Suno describes as approximately 10 songs per day. The free plan is suitable for experimenting, creating demos, and sharing music for personal, non-commercial projects.

The important limitation is that “free to create” does not mean “free to monetize.” Songs generated on the Basic plan cannot generally be used in monetized videos, advertisements, client projects, commercial releases, or other revenue-generating work. Use the workflow below to create a song, refine it, download it, and share it responsibly.

What you need to make a free Suno song

You do not need a microphone, MIDI keyboard, audio interface, recording software, or other music hardware. Suno’s documented text-prompt workflow runs in a web browser. You need:

  • A Suno account
  • Access to Suno’s Create page
  • An idea for the song, or a willingness to use Suno’s random-prompt feature
  • Lyrics you wrote yourself or have permission to use, if you want to provide lyrics

On the free Basic plan, Suno currently provides 50 credits that renew each day. Suno describes that balance as enough for approximately 10 songs, but it is not a guarantee that every account will receive exactly 10 completed songs. Credit costs, generation behavior, and interface labels can change, so check the balance shown in your account.

Step 1: Open Suno’s Create page

Sign in to Suno and open the Create page. Suno’s beginner workflow starts in Simple mode, where you describe the music you want in ordinary language.

Simple mode is the quickest choice when you do not already have lyrics or a detailed arrangement. Suno generates two versions of a song from the description, giving you more than one result to compare.

Step 2: Describe the song in Simple mode

A useful prompt tells Suno five things:

  1. Genre or musical direction: indie pop, acoustic folk, cinematic orchestral, blues, or electronic dance music.
  2. Mood or subject: hopeful, tense, nostalgic, triumphant, or a song about starting over.
  3. Vocal choice: lead vocal, duet, choir, intimate vocal, or instrumental.
  4. Instruments and production texture: fingerpicked guitar, handclaps, strings, pulsing synth bass, or spacious drums.
  5. Structure or energy: restrained verses, a gradual build, a memorable chorus, an instrumental break, or a dramatic ending.

For example, try:

Warm acoustic folk-pop song about leaving home, intimate lead vocal, fingerpicked guitar, subtle strings, gradual build, memorable uplifting chorus.

Another prompt could be:

Upbeat indie-pop song about starting over, bright guitars, handclaps, catchy chorus, female vocal.

You can make the prompt short or combine several musical ideas. If you are unsure what to write, use Suno’s random-prompt dice feature for an idea and then edit the result before generating.

Describe characteristics instead of copying an artist

Prompts work best when they identify musical qualities rather than asking for an exact imitation of a living artist. Describe the tempo, instruments, vocal character, emotional tone, and arrangement you want. This also gives you a more original starting point than simply asking for a clone of a recognizable performer.

Step 3: Choose Custom mode when you need more control

Select Custom mode when you already have lyrics, want an instrumental track, or need to provide more detailed direction. Suno’s Custom workflow allows you to enter original lyrics, ask Suno to generate lyrics, or turn on the Instrumental option when you do not want vocals. It also includes fields for style details, advanced options, and a title.

A practical Custom-mode setup looks like this:

Field What to enter
Lyrics Lyrics you wrote or have permission to use. Paste only the lyric text you want Suno to perform.
Style Genre, era or broad musical direction, energy, vocal character, instruments, and production texture.
Structure Optional guidance such as intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, instrumental break, or outro.
Constraints Instrumental-only direction, approximate mood, tempo feel, or a request for a restrained or expansive production.
Title A working title that will help you identify the track in your library.

For the Style field, you could use:

Dreamy electronic pop, mid-tempo, pulsing synth bass, airy vocal, restrained verses, wide anthemic chorus, clean modern production, hopeful but bittersweet mood.

If you want an instrumental documentary-style cue, switch on Instrumental and describe the scene or emotional movement without asking for vocals.

Use only lyrics and uploads you have rights to use

Suno states that users retain ownership and rights to original lyrics they input, regardless of which Suno version they use. That applies to lyrics the user actually wrote or otherwise has the legal right to provide. It does not make copied lyrics lawful.

Do not paste lyrics from a published song, lyric website, poem, or another writer unless you have permission or another valid legal basis. Suno’s Terms of Service require users to have the necessary rights to material they upload, including lyrics, audio, images, and other submissions.

Step 4: Generate alternatives without wasting your daily credits

Use the initial generations to compare directions rather than endlessly changing every part of a prompt. A credit-efficient process is:

  1. Write one clear prompt with a defined mood, genre, vocal choice, and structure.
  2. Generate the available alternatives.
  3. Listen for the strongest chorus, vocal performance, arrangement, and ending.
  4. Save and label the best version before trying a targeted change.
  5. Use the next generation to alter one or two elements, such as the tempo feel, instrumentation, or chorus energy.

Your free credits renew daily, but unused credits do not carry forward. If you are working on a particular idea, it is often more useful to reserve some of the day’s balance for a focused revision or extension than to spend every credit rewriting the same broad prompt.

Step 5: Extend a short song or create a different ending

If a promising song ends too soon or needs another section, use Suno’s Extend workflow:

  1. Open the song’s three-dot menu.
  2. Choose Remix/Edit.
  3. Select Extend.
  4. Choose the point in the song from which Suno should continue.
  5. Enter new lyrics or additional style details, if needed.
  6. Create the extension.

Listen to the new version and compare its transition with the original. Once you find an extension you want to keep, use Get Whole Song to stitch the extension to the original track.

Extending a song does not change the plan under which the underlying music was generated. A free-plan song remains subject to the free-plan usage restrictions.

Step 6: Download or share the result

You can share a song through its Suno link. You can also download your own songs from the three-dot menu in the Library or Workspace. Suno’s download documentation lists MP3 and WAV choices, but another current Suno help article says Basic users receive a lightweight MP3 download while WAV downloads are available to Pro and Premier subscribers.

Because Suno’s interface and plan features can change, check the download options displayed on your account. In practical terms:

  • Suno link: useful for showing someone the track directly on Suno.
  • Free-plan MP3: suitable for personal listening, a demo, or a personal non-monetizing video where the applicable terms are followed.
  • WAV: a higher-quality production file associated in Suno’s current documentation with Pro and Premier access, not something to assume is included with Basic.

Save the song’s title, creation date, plan status, prompt, lyrics ownership information, and the file you downloaded. This record helps you distinguish free-plan experiments from later songs made under a commercial-use subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free-plan rule that matters most: no monetization

Suno’s current help documentation describes Basic-plan songs as available for personal, non-commercial use. Suno’s Terms of Service also describe Basic outputs as for lawful, internal, personal, and non-commercial purposes, with attribution credit to Suno.

That means you should not treat a free-plan song as a general-purpose commercial asset. Do not assume you may use it in:

Upgrading later does not normally make an old free song commercial

A common mistake is to generate a song on the free plan, subscribe later, and assume the earlier track has automatically become commercially licensed. Suno specifically warns that subscribing after generation does not normally give a free-plan song commercial-use rights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suno’s help documentation distinguishes between:

  • Songs created while on Basic: intended for personal, non-commercial use.
  • Songs created while subscribed to Pro or Premier: eligible for the commercial-use rights Suno describes for those plans, including monetization and distribution, subject to the user’s rights and applicable platform rules.
  • Commercially eligible songs created during a paid subscription: Suno says those rights remain with the songs after cancellation, while new songs generated after returning to Basic do not receive the same commercial-use rights.

If commercial use matters, check Suno’s current plan terms before generating the track you intend to release. Do not rely on a later upgrade to repair the licensing status of an older free-plan generation.

Commercial-use permission is not the same as copyright protection

Even a paid-plan commercial-use grant does not guarantee that a song qualifies for copyright protection. Suno’s documentation cautions that fully AI-generated music may not receive copyright protection because copyright law generally requires human authorship.

The U.S. Copyright Office similarly explains that copyright protects human-authored expression. A work containing AI-generated material may still receive protection for sufficiently creative human-authored portions, such as original lyrics, or for human selection, arrangement, or modification. The outcome depends on the facts and the law of the relevant jurisdiction.

Therefore, keep these questions separate:

Question What it means
Can I generate it without paying? Usually yes, within the Basic plan’s daily credits.
Can I use it commercially under Suno’s plan terms? Basic songs are generally non-commercial; paid-plan eligibility applies to songs generated under the qualifying subscription.
Do I own or control the underlying lyrics? Only if you wrote them or obtained the necessary rights.
Will copyright law protect the entire recording? Not necessarily. AI-generated portions may not qualify, while human-authored contributions may receive protection depending on the facts.

This is general information, not legal advice. If a release has significant commercial value, obtain advice for the countries where you plan to publish and exploit it.

Free Suno checklist

  • Open the Create page and begin in Simple mode.
  • Describe the genre, mood or subject, vocal choice, instruments, and structure.
  • Use Custom mode for original lyrics, detailed style direction, or instrumental music.
  • Use only lyrics and uploads you wrote or have permission to use.
  • Expect up to 50 credits to renew daily, described by Suno as approximately 10 songs.
  • Remember that unused daily credits do not accumulate.
  • Save the strongest version and use Extend, Remix/Edit, and Get Whole Song when appropriate.
  • Check whether your account offers the free-plan MP3 download; do not assume WAV access.
  • Label free-plan songs as personal/non-commercial projects.
  • Do not monetize or commercially distribute a Basic-plan song.
  • Do not assume a later subscription automatically changes an older song’s rights.
  • Keep Suno’s commercial-use terms separate from copyright protection under applicable law.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a complete song with Suno for free?

Yes. Suno’s Basic plan currently provides up to 50 credits that renew daily, which Suno describes as approximately 10 songs. The exact number of completed songs can vary with credit use and product changes.

Can I monetize a song made on Suno’s free plan?

Generally no. Basic-plan songs are intended for personal, non-commercial use. Do not use them in monetized videos, advertisements, client work, paid productions, or commercial music releases unless the applicable rights clearly permit that use.

If I subscribe later, can I monetize a song I made for free?

Not automatically. Suno warns that subscribing after a song was generated does not normally grant that earlier free-plan song commercial-use rights.

Can I use my own lyrics in Suno?

Yes. Suno’s Custom workflow allows users to enter lyrics, and Suno states that users retain rights to original lyrics they input. You must still have the necessary rights to any lyrics or other material you upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a paid Suno plan guarantee copyright protection?

No. Commercial-use permission and copyright protection are different issues. Copyright protection may depend on the human-authored portions of the work, your creative contributions, and the law that applies.

The Bottom Line

Suno’s free Basic plan is a practical way to experiment with AI music: describe an idea in Simple mode, move to Custom mode when you need lyrics or arrangement control, use your daily credits strategically, and extend promising results when necessary. The boundary to remember is simple: free creation is not a free commercial license. Keep Basic-plan songs personal and non-monetizing, and verify the current terms before making music intended for commercial release.
