Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To make an OBS playlist overlay update, handle two separate jobs: play the YouTube playlist in a playlist-capable Browser Source, and make the displayed title or thumbnail read the currently playing video rather than remain static. OBS’s standard Text Source does not automatically synchronize with YouTube playlist changes. Set up the player and metadata separately, then test both across a transition before going live.
Choose what should update
“Update” can mean the video advances to the next playlist item, the overlay title or thumbnail changes to match that item, or both. A player can advance while a separate label stays unchanged, so decide which behavior you need before configuring the scene.
| Approach | Playback advances? | Metadata updates? | Best fit and limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser Source with a playlist-capable player | Can play a YouTube playlist; behavior depends on the player and YouTube embed conditions. | Only if the player exposes changing metadata. | One embedded player for playlist playback; test advancement in your setup. |
| Browser overlay that reads player state | Depends on the player it observes or contains. | Can update the title or thumbnail if it can access the current video identity. | Useful when accurate visible metadata matters; may require custom web code. |
| OBS Text Source | No. | No automatic playlist synchronization is documented in OBS’s guide; text is editable. | Suitable for a static label or manually updated title. |
| OBS Media Source with VLC playlist | Supports playlists of local media when VLC is installed. | Not a YouTube playlist synchronization method. | Use for supported local files, not a YouTube playlist. |
| Meld YouTube Promo Widget | No automatic detection of the next item in an existing playlist is documented. | Promotes a selected upload, rather than following playlist transitions. | Consider only if a rotating promotion is acceptable instead of a synced playlist overlay. |
OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add a webpage to a scene and Text Source as customizable text. Its guide also documents VLC playlist support for local media; that does not make VLC a YouTube playlist player. See the OBS Sources Guide.
Set up a playlist player in OBS
- Choose a playlist-capable player. Use a player or webpage that can load the YouTube playlist and, if needed, expose the active video’s title or other metadata. Confirm that its current instructions support your intended playlist, ordering, and looping behavior.
- Add it to the scene. In OBS, select the target scene, go to Sources → + → Browser Source, and enter the player or overlay page URL. Name the source so it is easy to identify, then size and position it in the preview.
- Set the playlist and playback options. Configure the playlist URL and the order or loop behavior in the player. If the player supports choosing an initial item, set it as needed. These are player settings; adding a Browser Source alone does not control YouTube playlist state.
- Put it in the right layer. OBS displays higher sources in the source list above lower ones. If the player or overlay is hidden, move it above the source that is covering it. Use OBS transforms to resize or crop it.
- Test a transition in the scene. Preview at least two consecutive items. Confirm that playback advances and, separately, that the visible title or thumbnail changes after the transition. Check visibility, playlist order, looping, and behavior after a Browser Source reload before relying on it live.
Make the title or thumbnail follow the current video
A playlist player does not necessarily provide metadata to a separate overlay. If the title remains static, use a player or overlay that exposes the current video identity and redraws its metadata when the active item changes. If the chosen page does not do that, the browser page needs transition-handling logic that reads the player state and updates the displayed title or thumbnail.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS’s Text Source can display text that you edit, but the official source guide does not describe a built-in connection that automatically changes it when a YouTube playlist advances. A manually edited Text Source is therefore a separate, manual workflow—not playlist synchronization.
A third-party example: OBS-Youtube-Player
The community project OBS-Youtube-Player describes using a browser source with a YouTube video or playlist URL. Its README documents options including an initial playlist index, loop and random playback, and a title display with title and author styling hooks. It is an independent project, not an official OBS feature. Its documentation does not guarantee that YouTube embeds will autoplay or advance reliably in every current setup, so test compatibility and playback permissions in your own scene before streaming.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The video advances, but the title stays the same: The player and metadata display are not synchronized. Use a player or overlay that exposes current-video metadata, or add transition handling to the browser page. If using OBS-Youtube-Player’s title option, verify that it works with your current setup.
- The title changes, but the video does not advance: Check the playlist URL and the player’s playlist, order, and loop configuration. OBS source settings alone do not make YouTube advance a playlist.
- The player is behind another source: In the Sources list, move it above the source obscuring it. Adjust its size or crop with OBS transforms if needed.
- You were advised to use a VLC playlist: Check whether the files are local. OBS’s documented VLC playlist capability applies to local media, not automatically to a YouTube playlist.
- You are adding an overlay webpage by URL: OBS Browser Source can display webpages; the OBS wiki also documents creating a browser source by dragging a URL into OBS. Some source properties may be configurable through URL arguments, depending on the page. See the OBS Sources Guide wiki.
- The player stops working after a reload or behaves differently live: Recheck the playlist and overlay in the actual OBS scene, including a transition and the intended visibility and looping settings. Embed behavior can depend on the player and YouTube conditions.
When a rotating promotion is enough
Meld’s vendor documentation describes a YouTube Promo Widget that displays a selected latest upload for 30 seconds and repeats every 10 minutes. It says the widget can be added to OBS through Spark Plug as a Browser Source, and that a new video URL can be set with Meld Spark and persist between sessions. That is a way to promote a selected upload, not evidence that the widget detects and follows the next item in an existing YouTube playlist. Check Meld’s current documentation for availability and details: Meld YouTube Promo Widget.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than play a playlist inside an OBS scene, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards are accepted; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video playback, not camera streaming.
