Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →OBS can restart a replay playlist after your computer and OBS reopen, but its documented controls do not promise to resume the exact item and timestamp that were playing when power failed. Set up a VLC Video source, configure looping and visibility behavior, arrange for OBS to launch after startup, then rehearse the complete recovery sequence before relying on it at an event.
What OBS can—and cannot—resume after an outage
OBS supports multi-item playlists through its VLC Video source. You can configure that playlist to loop and choose what happens when its source is hidden. Those controls govern ordinary playback and visibility; they do not establish that OBS saves the playlist’s position through a full power loss. The OBS Project describes VLC Video as allowing a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow” (OBS Project: Media Sources).
It is reasonable to configure the computer and OBS to start again after power returns and to test whether the playlist begins playing. Do not treat a restart from the beginning—or any observed behavior on one particular setup—as guaranteed continuation from the interrupted timestamp.
Set up a multi-video replay playlist
- Install VLC and check its architecture. Add VLC before opening the source selector. OBS notes that VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene for the event, add a VLC Video source, and open its properties. If VLC Video is not available, verify that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
- Add the media files in playback order. In the source properties, add each replay file to the playlist in the intended order. Confirm that the files are accessible from the computer that will run OBS.
- Choose loop and shuffle behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after its last item. Shuffle is optional and off by default; leave it off when the event requires a fixed sequence.
- Choose behavior when the source is hidden. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. You can instead select pause while hidden and resume when visible, or always play while hidden. These settings address scene visibility, not power-loss recovery.
For a single video rather than a playlist, OBS’s regular Media Source has a Loop option and Restart playback when source becomes active, which is on by default. That is a different source type from VLC Video and does not provide the same multi-item playlist workflow (OBS Project: Media Sources).

Make the computer and OBS launch after power returns
OBS cannot reopen itself while the computer is off. Configure the computer’s operating system and firmware as appropriate for the machine to power on after an interruption, then configure the operating system to launch OBS at startup. The exact controls vary by operating system and hardware, so check the documentation for the specific computer rather than assuming one universal menu path.
OBS documents launch parameters for automation, including actions such as starting streaming, recording, the virtual camera, or Replay Buffer. These parameters do not list an option to restore the former VLC playlist item and timestamp. For scheduled or automated OBS launches on Windows, OBS advises setting the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe (OBS Project: Launch Parameters).

Do not assume that launching OBS also means the event is live on YouTube: OBS startup and starting a broadcast are separate actions. If the event requires a live broadcast to resume, configure and test that workflow separately, including the stream-start behavior you intend to use.
Rehearse the full recovery sequence
Before an event, test a controlled restart under conditions that are safe for your setup. OBS recommends testing settings before streaming or recording (OBS Project: Quick Start Guide).

- Save the OBS scene collection and confirm that the event scene is selected when OBS opens.
- Check that the VLC playlist contains every intended file, in order, and that the media paths remain valid after a restart.
- Verify that the computer starts and OBS launches using the configured startup method.
- Observe whether video and audio begin, whether the playlist starts at the beginning or elsewhere, and whether looping works at the end of the list.
- If the broadcast itself must recover, verify that separately in a private or otherwise appropriate test setup before relying on it publicly.
Record the actual restart point you observe. A successful test shows how your current operating system, OBS version, source settings, and media behave together; it does not turn undocumented timestamp persistence into a guarantee.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source list | Whether VLC is installed and matches OBS architecture | Install VLC and ensure 64-bit VLC is used with 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS. |
| OBS opens but the playlist is empty or a file will not play | Whether the media file paths are accessible after startup | Restore the files to accessible locations and update the playlist entries in VLC Video properties; test after restarting. |
| Playback stops when changing scenes | The VLC source’s visibility behavior | Select pause/resume or always-play-while-hidden if that matches the scene workflow. This does not affect recovery from a power outage. |
| The playlist plays but does not start over after the last file | Loop Playlist | Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties. |
| OBS launches from a scheduled task but behaves unexpectedly on Windows | The task’s working directory | Set it to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS advises for scheduled or automated launches. |
| Playback starts at the beginning rather than the interrupted point | Whether exact position persistence is documented for your configuration | OBS’s cited documentation does not promise playlist-position recovery after power loss. Plan for a restart and rehearse the actual behavior; do not rely on an exact resume point. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded recordings rather than an OBS event that resumes at an exact interrupted timestamp, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not resume an OBS playlist at its former position or stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
