FFmpeg does not keep a durable record of which playlist video should run next when its process crashes. To resume reliably, supervise FFmpeg with a wrapper that stores playlist progress outside the process, waits for each run to exit, and applies a deliberate retry policy. For a crash in the middle of a video, decide whether recovery should replay that video or skip to the next one; FFmpeg cannot choose that policy for you.
Choose what “resume from the next video” means
A crash can happen after a video has partly streamed but before FFmpeg has finished it. There is no universally correct recovery choice: retrying the current item can replay content viewers already saw, while advancing immediately can omit content that had not yet streamed. Decide which outcome is less harmful for your channel before building the wrapper.
- Replay on failure: keep the current item marked as pending until FFmpeg exits successfully. If it crashes, relaunch the same video. This avoids intentionally skipping the item but may replay its opening or other already-sent sections.
- Skip on failure: save the next item before launching the current one. A crash then moves on, but a failure before or shortly after launch can skip a video that viewers barely received.
- Resume at a precise point: requires additional position tracking and a policy for translating a local playback position into what YouTube viewers actually received. The documented concat and process mechanisms below do not provide that durable, viewer-facing checkpoint by themselves.
For most playlist wrappers, the clearest baseline is to mark an item complete only after its FFmpeg process exits successfully. Treat a non-zero exit as a failed or interrupted item and retry it, or apply your explicitly chosen skip policy.
Store progress outside FFmpeg
Keep an ordered playlist and a durable current-item index or identifier in a file or other storage that survives FFmpeg exiting. Update the checkpoint atomically—for example, write the new state to a temporary file and replace the old checkpoint only after the write succeeds—so a machine restart or abrupt termination does not leave a partially written value.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Load the playlist and checkpoint when the supervisor starts.
- Launch FFmpeg for the item identified by the checkpoint.
- Wait for the process to exit and record its exit status.
- If it exited successfully, atomically save the next item as current.
- If it failed, follow the selected replay-or-skip policy; wait before retrying rather than creating a rapid restart loop.
- Stop cleanly when the playlist is intentionally complete or an operator requests shutdown.
This is wrapper or supervisor logic, not an FFmpeg built-in resume feature. FFmpeg’s documented input mechanisms can consume files in sequence, but the wrapper is responsible for preserving progress across process restarts. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation and FFmpeg documentation.
Choose concat demuxer or one process per video
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | A single FFmpeg process should read an ordered list of compatible local files continuously. | A restart at a particular item still needs separately saved progress. Files must have matching streams, codecs and time bases; inaccurate duration information, including duration from truncated files, can produce timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg Formats Documentation |
| One FFmpeg process per item | The wrapper needs a clear completion boundary to checkpoint the next video. | There are more process launches, and stopping one process before starting the next can create a gap or reconnect at YouTube. This is an implementation trade-off, not a guarantee about YouTube event continuity. YouTube Help |
| Segment muxer and segment list | Splitting one source into timed output segments. | Segment boundaries depend on reference-stream keyframes, and segment bookkeeping is not a generic saved checkpoint for a playlist of source videos. FFmpeg Formats Documentation |
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
The concat demuxer reads a text list of files and directives and demuxes the files one after another. It is convenient when the inputs have the same streams, codecs and time base and you want one process to consume the sequence. It does not, by itself, preserve which playlist item was active when the process died. Keep a separate checkpoint if a restarted job must begin at a known item.

Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the required script format and compatibility details. If your files differ in stream layout or timing, do not assume that placing them in one concat list will make them seamless; validate the inputs and playback before relying on the sequence.
Use one process per video for simpler checkpoints
A wrapper can launch a separate FFmpeg command for each file, wait for that process to finish, and then save the next item. This makes the completion boundary explicit and keeps playlist state straightforward. It also means each process stops between files. YouTube documents entering its Live server URL and stream key in an encoder, but that does not establish that a reconnect will continue the same uninterrupted live event.

Supervise retries without creating a restart loop
Capture each process’s exit status and write useful logs, but never put the YouTube stream key in logs, shared scripts or screenshots. Add a short delay before retrying and use increasing backoff if repeated failures continue. Provide a clean shutdown path so an intentional operator stop is not mistaken for a crash, and do not restart after a finite playlist has completed.
FFmpeg’s -xerror option stops and exits on error, which can help a supervisor detect a failed run. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so place options according to the command’s input/output order and check the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version; the project documentation tracks a continuously developed program. See FFmpeg’s option documentation.

What a YouTube reconnect does—and does not—promise
YouTube’s encoder guidance tells users to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into their encoder. It also says that stopping content from the encoder ends the stream, and that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. These instructions do not promise that after an FFmpeg crash, reconnecting will preserve the same uninterrupted viewer session or the same live event. Plan for a possible interruption rather than treating process restart as seamless continuation. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- The wrapper starts the playlist at the beginning after a restart: progress was stored only in memory or the checkpoint was not written durably. Persist the item identifier outside FFmpeg and update it atomically.
- A failed item is skipped unexpectedly: the wrapper advanced the checkpoint before confirming successful completion. Change the checkpoint timing or explicitly choose skip-on-failure behavior.
- A video plays twice after a crash: replay-current-item recovery is working as designed; the previous process may have sent part of that item before failing. Choose skip-on-failure only if omission is preferable to replay.
- The concat sequence has timestamp artifacts or fails on a file: check that all files have compatible streams, codecs and time bases, and that their duration information is reliable. Truncated-file duration information can cause problems.
- FFmpeg exits but the supervisor retries too quickly: add a delay or backoff, log the exit status, and distinguish an intentional stop from a failure.
- The stream appears as a new or interrupted session after recovery: YouTube’s encoder guidance does not guarantee identical-event continuity after a disconnect. Treat this as a platform/session behavior rather than proof that the playlist checkpoint is wrong.
