How to Make an FFmpeg 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream Recover After a Disconnect

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry temporary output failures while the process remains alive. Here’s the setup, YouTube’s 4K60 targets, and the limits of reconnect recovery.

To recover from a temporary output failure while FFmpeg is still running, send the FLV output through FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer and enable -attempt_recovery 1. The official example retries every second indefinitely. This does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and it does not guarantee YouTube will resume the same live event after a process restart.

What FIFO recovery does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can keep realtime processing going through a temporary output failure, such as a network outage, and attempt to restore the output. Its documented example uses an FLV FIFO output, -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. The example says recovery is attempted every second indefinitely. See the FFmpeg muxer documentation.

This covers a different failure from FFmpeg terminating. FIFO recovery is not a process supervisor: if FFmpeg exits, this option alone does not launch it again. A separate supervisor and a separate check of YouTube’s live-event behavior are needed for that case. Neither the documented example nor the YouTube encoder guidance guarantees gapless playback or event resumption after a restarted publisher.

Set the YouTube 4K 60fps encoding targets

YouTube’s consulted live encoder guidance recommends these settings for H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Video bitrate: 35 Mbps.
  • Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest: RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as the secure extension to RTMP.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source, encoder build, connection, or live event will perform reliably. YouTube’s consulted guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs and notes codec caveats for HDR. Confirm the codec, SDR/HDR mode, and stream-key settings in the current YouTube live encoder settings and Live Control Room. Google also documents RTMPS ingestion to YouTube.

Configure FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery

  1. Keep your working input and encode settings. Configure the normal FFmpeg input and encoder to produce the intended 3840×2160, 60 fps output. Retain the appropriate bitrate, CBR, and keyframe settings for your encoder; the FIFO example below is a structural pattern, not a complete tested command for every source or build.
  2. Wrap the output in FIFO. Set the output format to fifo and the FIFO format to flv, then enable -attempt_recovery 1. To follow the official example, set -recovery_wait_time 1.
  3. Choose the overflow behavior. The official example uses -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. Dropping queued packets can affect continuity; validate the behavior and latency with your actual source and network rather than assuming it is appropriate for every stream.
  4. Use the current YouTube destination and key. Send the output to the RTMPS ingestion endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in scripts, logs, or support requests.
  5. Test the failures separately. In a controlled session, interrupt output temporarily and inspect FFmpeg’s logs to see whether the output recovers. Then test what happens when the FFmpeg process itself exits. Verify YouTube event behavior independently; a reconnecting publisher is not proof that viewers experienced uninterrupted playback.

The official documentation’s pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a RTMPS_DESTINATION

Replace INPUT and RTMPS_DESTINATION with your actual input and current YouTube RTMPS destination plus stream key. The example’s H.264/AAC codecs and stream maps may not match your media; adapt them to the streams you intend to publish. It is documentation-derived, not a tested production command.

Separate the three recovery layers

Failure or concern What addresses it What remains to verify
Temporary output or network failure while FFmpeg continues running FIFO output recovery with -attempt_recovery 1; the documented example retries at one-second intervals. Whether your build, source, and connection recover as expected, and what packet loss or playback interruption occurs.
FFmpeg process exits A separate process supervisor is required to relaunch the process. The FIFO documentation does not specify supervisor configuration or establish that YouTube will accept the restarted publisher into the same event.
YouTube event after a publisher restart Verify the event’s behavior in a controlled test using your Live Control Room setup. The cited guidance does not guarantee event resumption or uninterrupted viewer playback.

Troubleshoot recovery that does not work as expected

  • FFmpeg exits instead of retrying: FIFO recovery addresses temporary output failures while FFmpeg remains alive; it is not a restart mechanism for a terminated process. Check the logs and handle process supervision separately.
  • The output reconnects but the live event does not resume: Connection recovery and YouTube event resumption are separate. Check the current event and stream-key configuration in Live Control Room and test the restart path independently.
  • Recovery causes a visible interruption or discontinuity: The documented retry behavior is not a promise of gapless viewing. Review logs and test with the real source and network; assess whether dropping queued packets on overflow suits your continuity and latency needs.
  • The stream does not meet the intended 4K60 settings: Confirm that the source and encoder actually produce 3840×2160 at 60 fps and review the codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and SDR/HDR mode against YouTube’s current guidance.
  • YouTube rejects or fails to receive the output: Confirm the current RTMPS endpoint and stream key in Live Control Room, and keep the key private. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes the delivery method.

Copyright and reused-content checks for documentary streams

Recovery settings only address delivery. They do not grant rights to stream a documentary or establish eligibility for monetization. Before broadcasting, confirm that you own or have permission to use the footage, soundtrack, narration, and other material, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and content. A live stream that reconnects successfully can still face rights or policy issues.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a local FFmpeg process running, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start the free day.
