You can make an AI cover song for free by preparing a vocal performance or song audio, converting the vocal with a free voice tool, then checking the result against the instrumental. For a local workflow, Applio supports uploaded-audio voice conversion and custom model training; UtaForge AI accepts vocal, instrumental, or full-song input and adds lyric-timing edits and subtitled video output. These tools do not establish that every model, song, or voice is cleared for your use, so check the relevant terms and get consent for an identifiable person’s voice.
What You Need Before Making A Cover
- A song you are authorized to use, plus an instrumental and a vocal performance if your chosen workflow needs them. UtaiSynthesizer supports instrumental and vocal uploads, and UtaForge AI accepts vocal, instrumental, or full songs with vocals.
- A target voice model. Applio depends on voice models and supports custom model training; UtaForge AI requires the separately installed VOICEVOX ENGINE. Check the model or voice library’s terms as well as the tool’s terms.
- A clear vocal take with the melody and timing you want. A cover conversion works from singing input; the supplied tool details do not establish text prompts for directing genre or style, so plan the arrangement through your performance and source audio.

Make The Cover Step By Step
- Choose the song and intended use. Start with audio and a voice you have permission to use. An identifiable singer’s voice needs that person’s authorization: Spotify’s September 25, 2025 policy announcement says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. Read the reported policy details. Check the selected tool’s terms and the terms for any model, voice library, or media you use.
- Pick a route that matches your files. For a vocal conversion project, use a vocal take with Applio or AICoverGen. For a song already containing vocals, UtaForge AI accepts full songs with vocals; UtaiSynthesizer also supports instrumental and vocal uploads. Confirm current setup instructions with the tool’s site or project documentation.
- Prepare the performance. Record or select a vocal take that follows the song’s melody and phrasing. Keep the instrumental separate if your workflow uses one. Avoid assuming a tool will create a new arrangement from a text prompt: prompt-based genre generation is not established for these cover workflows.
- Choose an authorized voice model. Load a model you are allowed to use. With Applio, conversion depends on voice models; with AICoverGen, the workflow requires RVC voice models. UtaForge AI requires VOICEVOX ENGINE separately. The supplied details do not establish that any particular model imitates a named singer, language, or genre, so check model documentation for those specifics.
- Convert and adjust the take. Use the chosen tool’s conversion controls. AICoverGen lists pitch, mixing, reverb, and protection controls; UtaiSynthesizer provides a multitrack timeline; UtaForge AI provides waveform-based lyric and mora timing edits. Use small timing or pitch adjustments to address audible mismatches rather than changing several things at once.
- Compare the converted vocal with the backing. Listen for timing drift, masked words, abrupt edits, and notes that no longer sit naturally with the instrumental. If timing is the problem, UtaForge AI’s lyric-timing controls are relevant; if your project is multitrack, UtaiSynthesizer includes timeline editing. These features do not establish support for any particular genre or instrument, so verify fit with the tool’s documentation.
- Export and review the file. Select an available format for your next editing step: Applio offers exports, AICoverGen supports WAV and MP3, and UtaForge AI exports MP3 and subtitled 9:16 or 16:9 MP4 video. Check a tool’s site for exact export options and current instructions before choosing a workflow.

Convert A Vocal Take And Keep Your Own Backing
Prepare a vocal take and instrumental separately, then use Applio for uploaded-audio conversion with a model you are authorized to use. Mix the converted vocal against the backing in a multitrack workflow; the supplied Applio details establish batch inference and exports, but do not specify a particular mixing interface or supported genre.
Retiming Lyrics In A Full Song
Use UtaForge AI when you need to work with a full song containing vocals and adjust lyric or mora timing through its waveform controls. It is described as Alpha, so check its project documentation for setup and current behavior; install VOICEVOX ENGINE separately.
Make A Local Cover With Detailed Conversion Controls
AICoverGen accepts a YouTube link or local audio and provides pitch, mixing, reverb, and protection controls. It requires RVC voice models. Its listing does not establish that a YouTube link grants permission to use the source, or that a selected model is authorized for a particular singer.

Rights And Release Checks
Voice consent and platform terms matter for covers. FineShare Singify’s listed terms restrict commercial use, and UtaiSynthesizer’s listing says commercial use is restricted across some model weights. Check each service’s current terms and the terms attached to the audio, model, or voice library before sharing or monetizing a cover. Spotify said in August 2026 that it introduced an “AI Persona” badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated rather than real people; that disclosure does not establish permission to use a voice or song.
