OBS and YouTube do not have a documented built-in control that automatically excludes videos already played on the current date. YouTube’s playlist repeat setting affects what viewers replay in the YouTube player, not the order of media sent by your live encoder. OBS can loop or shuffle a VLC playlist, but daily exclusions require a separate scheduler or custom automation that records playback history and filters the playlist.
Where the playlist rotation is controlled
For a YouTube Live broadcast generated from local files, the sequence is controlled by the software sending the video to the stream—not by the playlist controls in the YouTube viewer.

Set up an OBS playlist for ordinary looping or shuffle

Confirm that your live video is being generated from local video files in OBS. Use a Media Source for one file; use VLC Video when you need a playlist. The OBS Media Sources documentation describes both source types.

Install VLC before adding a VLC Video source. OBS documents VLC Video availability for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Add your video files to the VLC Video playlist source in OBS.

Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after its final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want the order randomized. These are separate controls; choose them according to the rotation you want.

Start or monitor the broadcast as usual, and verify that the VLC source is the media source actually being sent to the live output.
This setup can repeat a list or randomize its order. Shuffle is not a “played today” filter: the documented OBS controls do not say that shuffle stores which files have already played or excludes them for the rest of a calendar day.

Add a daily “already played” rule
To skip each item that has already been shown today, the rotation needs state: a record of playback tied to each item and a definition of what counts as played. A scheduler or custom controller must use that state to generate or feed an eligible playlist. This is an implementation approach inferred from the controls documented by OBS, not a verified, tested OBS integration.

Choose the rule. Decide whether a video counts as played when it starts, completes, or reaches a minimum playback duration. “Played today” is otherwise ambiguous—for example, an interrupted video might have started but not completed.

Give each item a stable identity. The scheduler needs to distinguish files reliably, even if filenames or playlist positions change. A file path or another persistent identifier can serve as the record key in a custom design.

Record playback against a date. When the chosen event occurs—start, completion, or the selected duration—the automation should write an entry associating that item with the applicable date. Decide which timezone defines “today,” especially if the stream runs across midnight.

Filter before selecting the next item. Build the candidate list from items without a qualifying record for the current date. If every item has a record, define what should happen: wait, show a holding slate, or begin a new cycle only after the date changes.

Feed the filtered list to playback. The custom scheduler must update or otherwise supply its eligible candidates to the source that OBS is using. The exact method depends on the playback environment; the cited OBS documentation does not prescribe a daily-history interface.

Test edge cases before relying on it. Check what happens after an OBS restart, a stream disconnect, a file error, a date or timezone boundary, and a duplicate playlist entry. Confirm that the record is written at the event your rule specifies, rather than assuming a shuffle operation provides this behavior.
Do not mistake a playlist plugin for a daily-history feature
OBS has a separate Media Playlist Source plugin listing. Its existence does not establish that it tracks videos played on a given date or excludes them until the next day. Confirm a tool’s actual documented behavior against your chosen rule before depending on it; a playlist source alone is not evidence of date-based history.

Troubleshoot the likely failure points

VLC Video is unavailable: VLC must be installed. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS says VLC must also be 64-bit.

The list repeats but does not skip today’s items: Loop Playlist only restarts the list when it runs out. It is not a daily exclusion control.

The order changes but previously played items return: Shuffle randomizes the order; the documented control does not maintain a daily playback ledger.

Viewers see a repeated playlist, but the live sequence is unchanged: YouTube’s playlist repeat control is for the viewer-side YouTube player, not the encoder’s outgoing broadcast. See YouTube Help.

An item is wrongly treated as played or eligible: Check whether the automation records on start, completion, or a minimum-duration threshold, and confirm that its date boundary and timezone match your intended meaning of “today.”

The same video appears twice under different entries: Check how the scheduler identifies files. If duplicate entries should count as one item, the automation needs to treat them as the same item rather than relying only on playlist position.

The filtered list empties: Decide in advance whether playback should pause, use a holding slate, or follow another explicit policy; the daily rule cannot select an eligible item when none remain.
Keep the stream running without maintaining a home computer
