In OBS Studio, turn on Automatically Reconnect before streaming, and record your gameplay locally at the same time. Reconnect can attempt to restore transmission when your internet drops; a local recording protects the gameplay if it cannot. Neither is a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing, so rehearse a connection loss before relying on the setup.
What an outage can—and cannot—be fixed by
A YouTube gaming broadcast depends on the connection between OBS on your computer and YouTube’s ingest server. If that network path fails, viewers may lose the live feed. OBS’s connection guidance says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, including cases where the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS explains the connection symptoms and troubleshooting steps.
There are separate protections for separate outcomes: OBS automatic reconnect attempts to restore the live transmission, while local recording preserves a copy of the gameplay. A recording does not keep viewers connected during the outage, and reconnect does not guarantee that every interruption will be recovered as one seamless broadcast.
Set up OBS to recover and preserve the replay
1. Enable automatic reconnect
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it. OBS lists this as a configurable setting in its overview guide.
- Test it before a real broadcast. OBS’s overview does not specify a universal retry interval or promise success for every outage, so do not plan around a particular recovery time.
2. Record locally while streaming
- Configure OBS recording and confirm the destination has enough available storage for the session.
- Start the recording as well as the stream, then verify that a file is being written where expected.
- After the broadcast, check that the local file plays and includes the gameplay and audio you intended to capture.
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube also recommends a local backup in its live-stream archive guidance. Treat the platform archive as useful, not as your only copy.

3. Rehearse the whole setup
OBS recommends testing the setup before a first stream. Use the same game, encoder, scenes, connection arrangement, and recording destination you expect to use live. For a private or unlisted rehearsal, simulate loss of the primary connection and check whether OBS attempts to reconnect, whether the local recording continues, and what viewers see when transmission returns. The official guidance does not establish how long YouTube preserves a particular live session after an encoder disconnects.
Reduce the chance of a disconnect
- Check the configured bitrate against the connection. If the upload path cannot sustain it, OBS troubleshooting suggests lowering the video bitrate.
- Try a different ingest server. OBS lists trying another server among its connection troubleshooting steps.
- Check the network path. Look for instability between the streaming computer, router or access point, internet provider, and the selected ingest server.
- Consider a truly independent backup connection. A cellular hotspot or other separate internet path may help if the primary connection fails. This is a practical inference from OBS’s documented network failure mode, not a tested or guaranteed fix. Coverage, upload capacity, hardware compatibility, and setup vary; rehearse the switchover with your actual equipment.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, covers dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. It does not validate a particular hotspot or state a universal minimum upload speed for one.

What YouTube DVR does during a live stream
DVR is a viewer playback feature: it can let viewers pause and rewind a live stream. It does not restore the encoder’s connection or create a local backup. Viewers cannot seek to before the stream went live, and YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
OBS disconnects or shows dropped frames
Suspect the network path to the ingest server. Check whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate; try a lower bitrate or another ingest server, following OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.

The stream does not return after the connection comes back
Automatic reconnect is an attempt, not a guarantee. Confirm the setting is enabled and repeat a controlled rehearsal. The cited OBS overview does not specify retry timing or a maximum retry count, and YouTube’s session behavior after an encoder disconnect is not established here.
The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete
Check the local recording first. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and recommends keeping a local archive as backup. Confirm the recording file exists and plays before deleting or overwriting it.

The backup hotspot does not help
A backup path only helps if it is available, independent of the failed connection, and able to carry the stream. Test the actual hotspot or second link with your broadcast configuration; no particular device or cellular capacity is validated by the cited guidance.
