How to Make a Seamless Loop for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream

OBS can repeat a video or playlist, but a seamless loop depends on editing the file’s ending to join its beginning. Here’s how to configure OBS and YouTube Live, test the stream, and handle copyright and reliability issues.

To loop a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live, play it through an encoder such as OBS Studio: add a Media Source and enable Loop. That repeats the file, but does not make its ending join smoothly to its beginning. For a genuinely seamless loop, first edit and test the picture and audio at that boundary. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room and verify the stream preview before going live.

Make the video itself loop cleanly

A seamless loop is an editing result, not an encoder setting. OBS restarts the file as-is; it does not blend its last frames or audio into the first. If those points do not match, viewers may see a jump or flash, or hear a gap or click.

  1. Open the video in an editor or player that lets you check its end and beginning repeatedly.
  2. Watch and listen across the boundary. Look for a change in camera position, brightness, motion, or sound level; listen for a pause, abrupt cut, or click.
  3. If the join is distracting, adjust the edit. Depending on the material, trim the ends, change the in/out points, or use a carefully matched transition or audio crossfade.
  4. Export or select the finished file, then replay the end-to-start transition several times. Test the actual export, not only the editing timeline.

The appropriate transition depends on the footage and soundtrack. A crossfade can hide a cut, but may create a visible double image or muddy audio if the material does not suit it.

Loop one video in OBS

OBS Studio’s Media Source can play a local video file and repeat it. The OBS documentation lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; support can also depend on the file’s encoding and the system. The Media Sources guide was published on January 11, 2022. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In OBS, select the scene for your broadcast. Under Sources, select + → Media Source.
  2. Name the source, then select OK.
  3. In the source properties, select the local file you prepared. Enable Loop, then select OK.
  4. Start playback and let it run across the end-to-start boundary. Check the video and audio in the OBS preview before connecting to a public stream.

Use the Media Source for a single file. If you change or replace the file, revisit the source properties and confirm the selected path and loop setting.

Loop a playlist in OBS

For multiple recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. This source requires VLC to be installed; OBS and VLC should both be 64-bit when using 64-bit OBS. The playlist repeats when it runs out of files, but each file’s transitions and the playlist order still need checking.

  1. Install VLC if the VLC Video source is unavailable in OBS.
  2. In the OBS scene, select + under Sources → VLC Video.
  3. Add the files to the playlist in the intended order and enable Loop Playlist.
  4. Preview the whole sequence, including the transition between each pair of files and the join from the last file back to the first.

For details on OBS source behavior, see OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

YouTube receives the broadcast from OBS using a server URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup and the preview-to-live workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube if available, and enter the connection details. If you use a custom server option, enter the server URL and key in the corresponding fields.
  3. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send an encoder feed to your channel.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview, video, audio, and stream health. If the stream is scheduled and YouTube requires it, verify the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
  5. When finished, stop the broadcast deliberately: end it in YouTube and stop the encoder feed in OBS.

Choose settings that the file and connection can sustain

Match OBS output resolution and frame rate to the source where practical, and choose settings your computer and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single correct bitrate for every loop. Consult the matching row in YouTube’s current table rather than copying a number intended for a different format.

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS for encoder streams.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Bitrate: Select the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Ensure your upload connection can sustain it.

These are YouTube Help recommendations, not universal settings for every encoder or source. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the appropriate configuration.

Test privately and monitor the broadcast

Before a public or scheduled broadcast, test with representative movement and audio. Confirm the video repeats without a visible or audible interruption, the preview looks right, and Live Control Room reports a healthy stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages during the event, and its streaming tips recommend keeping upload headroom; the stated recommendation is 20% above the stream’s bitrate.

See YouTube’s streaming tips for its network and monitoring guidance. A speed test is only a snapshot: other devices, network congestion, or changes in the connection can affect a long broadcast.

Copyright and YouTube Live rules

Having a recording does not by itself establish that you have permission to stream everything it contains. YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A live stream may be interrupted for a match, including when the creator has a license, unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the rights and permissions for the video and audio before streaming. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Copyright permission and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. The sources here establish YouTube’s live-stream copyright scanning, not whether a particular reused video qualifies for monetization. Do not assume that a loop or a license guarantees monetization or prevents a live interruption.

Choose a setup for the length of the stream

Approach Best fit What to account for
OBS Media Source with Loop One local video Simple setup, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection must keep sending the feed.
OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist Several local videos in a sequence Requires VLC; check playlist order and every transition. The local computer and connection must remain running.
StreamNeo cloud streaming A YouTube stream that should keep playing without a home computer running Upload videos, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

For a single test or a stream that can stop when your computer does, local OBS may be enough. For unattended, long-running YouTube playback without keeping a home encoder online, a cloud service is an alternative. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre among encoder options for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but that listing alone does not establish its current pricing, terms, or performance: YouTube’s live-streaming guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Common problems and fixes

  • The video jumps or flashes when it repeats: The loop is restarting the file without repairing its boundary. Edit the end and beginning, then test the exported file across the join.
  • There is a click, silence, or abrupt sound change: Inspect the audio at the boundary, adjust the edit or use a suitable crossfade, and test it again in OBS.
  • VLC Video is missing from the source list: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube receives no encoder feed: Check that OBS is streaming, and confirm its server URL and stream key match the selected YouTube stream.
  • The preview is unstable or stream health shows a problem: Check the selected bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen format and whether the connection can sustain it. Reduce settings if needed and leave upload headroom.
  • The stream is interrupted after a content match: Review the rights for the matched material. If it is licensed, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent interruption.

Archive length and stopping a stream

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If keeping an archive matters, check YouTube’s current help page and plan the broadcast duration accordingly; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop the encoder when you are done. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
