How to Make a Continuous YouTube Stream from a Church’s SRT Subtitle Videos

Loop a church video or playlist on YouTube Live with OBS, understand the difference between visible SRT subtitles and live captions, and test the setup safely.

To keep church videos playing continuously on YouTube Live, loop a local video in OBS Studio or create a looping VLC playlist, then send the stream to YouTube from the Live Control Room. If the subtitles must appear for every viewer, render the SRT subtitles onto the video before streaming. OBS documents loop playback and subtitle-track controls, but its documentation does not establish that it automatically loads a separate SRT sidecar file.

Choose how the subtitles should appear

An SRT file is a subtitle file; having it beside a video does not by itself make its words visible in the video picture or deliver them as YouTube Live captions. Decide which result the church needs before building the stream.

Visible words for every viewer: render open captions

If everyone watching should see the words, create a version of each video with the subtitles rendered into the picture, then play that version in OBS. This avoids relying on a player to find and display a separate SRT file. The text becomes part of the image, not a selectable caption track.

Selectable live captions: use a supported caption-delivery path

YouTube says live captions must be sent to YouTube. Its documented options are captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or compatible caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST. The guide says YouTube currently supports one caption track. The documentation does not establish that OBS can send a plain SRT sidecar as the live caption feed; do not assume that uploading or selecting an SRT file in OBS will create selectable YouTube captions. See YouTube’s live-caption requirements.

Check the videos and SRT files

  1. Match each SRT file to the intended video and confirm that the video plays with its expected audio.
  2. Check subtitle timing near the beginning, middle, and end. Look for delayed or early lines, missing text, and captions that stay on screen too long.
  3. If using open captions, inspect the rendered video on a typical viewing screen. Check that the text is legible, does not cover important content, and remains synchronized throughout.
  4. If relying on a subtitle track in OBS’s VLC Video source, verify the exact file pair in the installed setup. OBS documents subtitle controls but does not confirm automatic sidecar-SRT detection.

Set up looping playback in OBS

OBS Studio’s documented options cover a single looping local video or a VLC-based playlist. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The source documentation is at OBS Media Sources.

Loop one video with Media Source

  1. In OBS, create or select the scene you will send to YouTube.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name.
  3. Choose the local video file. Enable Loop so playback repeats when it reaches the end.
  4. Check that the source fits the scene and that its audio is audible. If you prepared an open-caption version, select that rendered file.
  5. Test the transition from the end of the video back to its beginning. A loop setting repeats the file; it does not guarantee that the overall broadcast will remain online continuously.

Rotate several videos with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source.
  3. Add the video files to the source playlist in the desired order.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off if the church needs a fixed sequence.
  5. If the media exposes a subtitle track, use the source’s Subtitles Enabled checkbox and Subtitle Track selector as appropriate. Test the exact video and SRT combination; these controls do not establish that an external SRT sidecar will be detected automatically.
  6. Play through clip changes and the playlist wraparound. Confirm video, audio, framing, and subtitles before sending the scene live.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

The channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before preparing a scheduled broadcast; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow at YouTube encoder setup.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to the channel.
  3. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; consult its encoder settings for the current guidance.
  4. Start the encoder output and check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public. Confirm the correct scene, subtitle appearance, audio, and stream health.

Test and monitor before relying on the stream

Run an unlisted or private test before a service or unattended schedule. YouTube recommends testing beforehand with similar audio and movement, checking the preview, and monitoring audio, video, and health messages during the stream. Its live-streaming tips also advise advance setup and checking archive and watch-page access.

  • Confirm captions or open subtitles are present and synchronized, including after a loop or playlist transition.
  • Listen for missing audio, unexpected silence, or abrupt changes between clips.
  • Check scene framing and watch-page playback from a viewer’s perspective.
  • Verify the intended archive behavior and access in YouTube Studio; do not assume a loop setting guarantees an archive or a particular archive duration.
  • During a live run, watch the Live Control Room for stream-health messages and check that playback continues.

Compare the ways to keep prerecorded church videos on YouTube Live

Approach Best for Important check or trade-off
StreamNeo Keeping uploaded videos or a playlist live on YouTube from the cloud without leaving a computer running at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Check subtitle rendering and caption needs in the uploaded files and YouTube workflow.
OBS Media Source loop Repeating one local video. OBS documents file looping, not a confirmed sidecar-SRT workflow. The computer and connection used to run OBS must remain available for the stream.
OBS VLC Video playlist Playing several local videos in a known sequence. Requires VLC. Subtitle controls are available, but verify whether the exact media and SRT files work as intended.
Open captions rendered into the video Making subtitle text visible to all viewers. Text is part of the picture rather than a selectable caption track.
YouTube embedded or HTTP live captions Delivering selectable live captions through a compatible workflow. Requires EIA 608/CEA 708 embedding or supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP POST; a plain SRT sidecar is not established as a direct route.
AJA HELO Plus A specialized appliance option for scheduled prerecorded media without a computer. YouTube lists its PlayToStream functionality for YouTube Live. Check current product and marketplace availability and whether it suits the church’s setup; it is not required for the OBS workflow.

YouTube’s encoder list describes the AJA HELO Plus option. It is an alternative to the software workflow, not a prerequisite.

Troubleshoot common problems

The video plays, but subtitles do not appear

The SRT may not be loaded or exposed as a track. For guaranteed visible text, render the subtitles onto the video picture and test that version. If using VLC Video, check Subtitles Enabled and the Subtitle Track selector, then verify the exact file combination locally.

Subtitles are visible but out of sync

Check the SRT-to-video match and timing near the beginning, middle, and end. If the mismatch is in the prepared open-caption video, correct the subtitle timing and render a new version before streaming.

Confirm the intended files are in the VLC Video playlist, Loop Playlist is enabled, and shuffle is off when order matters. Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.

YouTube does not receive the encoder stream

Confirm that the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS match the selected live stream, and that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. Prefer RTMPS where available and check Live Control Room messages and stream health.

The stream is online, but playback or audio is wrong

Check the OBS preview and YouTube preview, then review the source audio, scene framing, and transitions. Test with similar audio and movement before the service and continue monitoring during the broadcast.

The broadcast stops even though the video was set to loop

Looping controls local media playback; it does not promise uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Check whether OBS, the computer, the network, or the YouTube ingest stopped, and use the Live Control Room to identify stream-health messages. A separate playback or cloud service may be preferable if the computer cannot be left running.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos or a playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

  1. Upload the recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. If you are ready to try it, start your free first day.
